Ben,
Our firewall has me locked out of downloading the entire article. I was able to read the overview and get the idea, but I don’t know if I am giving you the extent of you are looking for.
I still think the entire premise of this initiative is to PLAN for projects in advance, use limited resources for preliminary work, and keep executives aware of how resources within the organization are being utilized so they can determine which projects are in line with the strategic goals of the organization and which of those initiatives are worth pursuing during a given period of time. A checklist of best practices isn’t a bad idea at all if the understanding is that each organization is at a different maturity level and the document is to be used as a guide. You can find quite a bit of information about innovation management as well an article or two about ISO 56002 in Gartner.

Good morning Ben,
Here is another follow up from our Data Science group leader Colt from CPS Energy. Let us know if you have follow up questions!
IS0 56002 is a guidance document for innovation management:
https://www.iso.org/standard/68221.html
It is a general reference applicable to all industries, including IT and analytics. It would be a useful read for the development of a proprietary innovation strategy, but it was published so recently (last summer) that any projects following it are likely still in a pre-launch state.

Subject: ISO 56002:2019: New Standard for Innovation Management SystemsMaybe this topic will wake everyone up in this blog. I just read a little about ISO 56002. What would this buy for IT organizations? Is anyone out there following it? Would it help innovation in analytics? Is it anything like ISO 5000?

Thanks for that reply.
What are your thoughts about ISO 56002?I like your last comment ”As a result, people and monetary resources aren’t planned for properly on the technology side.” I believe that Utility IT organizations should be assigning a budget for IT R&D just as they do for Operations R&D. Playing devils advocate; Why spend the money if in the software business there is frenetic competition to employ new technologies. So let the vendors spend the money and go through the heart aches of R&D. In reality, it should be somewhere in the middle. The cost of innovation is balanced yet we are not totally controlled by vendors controlling what gets innovated and what not.

Ben,
We’ve used Yes Energy for about six years, though we have tended to use it more for modeling transmission outages and congestion. My personal experience is from 4+ years ago, but if you want to reach out I can put you in touch with people who have used it recently. My recollections:
- Very easy to use for our traders and analysts
- Vendor service was second to none; very responsive and helpful; always looking for ways to improve their product. They have a user conference annually in Boulder where users suggest and vote on the enhancements they want to see in the upcoming year.
- They have (had?) two add-on data options. One was API based and the other was SQL Server based. They likely have something better now.
As I said, feel free to reach out if you want to talk to someone with more recent experience.
