NAICS codes
Posted by Greg Mcmahan on March 30, 2020 at 12:43 pmHello,
I would like to post a question for any members that are using or plan on using NAICS codes for Customer Segmentation. I have been asked to identify businesses in our service area that are most effected by our state shutdown of non-essential businesses – restaurants, bars ect. NAICS codes seem to be the best avenue but we currently don’t collect them in our system just a UBI#.
Has anyone found a way to crossreference UBI# to NAIC codes or even been able to get these codes based on addresses or UBI#. I did see a site with a lookup tool (not sure if anyone has used this or not) that may work for purchasing them by address. If anyone has any experience with this site or any other sites that have been used. https://www.naics.com/company-lookup-tool/
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks, Greg

You can purchase NAICS codes from Dun and Bradstreet. I do not have details on cost, but they also have a lookup tool if you don’t have a large volume of records. I have found that NAICS are not always the most accurate way of determining how a facility is being used, but they work if you don’t need precision.

I am also interested in hearing results on this. We maintain some NAICs in our system, but not all, and not necessarily accurate.
Since you have UBIs, you may want to check with your state’s Dept of Revenue. Washington state has an online lookup tool where you can search by company name or UBI, and it will display the NAIC that is registered with the state. This may not always be accurate for the unique facility, for example Boeing would be listed as an aerospace manufacturer, but the building may just be an office building. Unfortunately, our Dept of Revenue does not allow electronic access to the dataset, and does not provide an API, so we just use it for checking individual accounts as necessary.

Hello Everyone,
I am Mike Risner at the Utility Analytics Institute. I have been with UAI since about its inception in 2013. Prior to UAI I worked for about 10 years in the utility industry. My good fortune is that my work is in showing the terrific people in our community the value UAI can provide and helping them to realize that value as members. Other roles have been with Intel, AT&T, and Prosavvy.
I am originally from and still reside in Phoenix, AZ. When I am not working or self-isolating I enjoy hiking, painting, chess, working on my home, and spending time with family.
I feel very fortunate to be a part of the amazing community that is UAI and look forward to getting to know you all a bit better.
All the best,
Mike

Subject: Introduce YourselfHello UAI Members,
I’m excited to try something new on UAI’s Member-Only Community. I want to not only make this forum a place for work and professional connections to take place on a daily basis, a place to ask each other questions, find answers and exchange knowledge and share information, I want to make it a fun environment to help us all de-stress, get to know each other a little better, and build bonds and friendships of a lifetime.
One of the coolest things about the UAI community is seeing members make connections with one another-it’s incredible to watch personal and professional relationship and friendships begin, grow, evolve, and last. The more relationships that are built between us and the more we get to know each other, the more valuable our work exchanges will become. We open up, we share more, we learn more and we all become so much better together!
Our community gets bigger every day. Many of you already know one another, while others are brand-new faces. I feel like it’s time that we (both new members and established ones) take a little time to introduce ourselves.
- Share your name
- Where you’re from
- How long you’ve worked in utility analytics
- I also encourage you to share non-invasive personal tidbits about yourself, i.e. what you like to do for fun, your hobbies, your pet peeves, or even your favorite memes, of course keeping it in good taste. Share things that will help us all get to know you better
I think it is important to have a little fun while we work and enjoy each other’s company. Please, use the UAI Member-Only Community as a place to work hard and play hard, enjoy, laugh, and have some fun.
I’ll kick us off, and please know you can include as much or little detail in your introduction. I’m wordy, so I went all out:
I’m Leslie, UAI’s membership & digital engagement manager. I’ve been with UAI for almost five months and I’m passionate about connecting members who share similar interests and challenges, and providing them with benefits, experiences, and tools they need to solve their problems and improve their organizations. I enthusiastically joined UAI to help improve and evolve the UAI membership value, as well as manage UAI’s collection of Communities. I am a strategic program director, dynamic business leader, and expert facilitator with over 20 years of experience. To learn even more about my professional work or to connect with me, visit my profile on UAI’s member-only site or LinkedIn. Please reach out to me directly at any time if you have questions or need anything from UAI. I can be reached at lcook@endeavorb2b.com or 646-693-5965.
I’m a Texas girl at heart, born and raised in a small town in north Texas, and then I headed out west to graduate from Texas Tech University (Go Red Raiders!). After school I moved to Colorado and I’ve lived all along the front range for the last 22 years, settling in Denver for the last six years, and I still have a Texas accent (You can take the girl out of Texas, but you can’t take the Texas accent out of the girl!). I’ve been married to my best friend from high school for 17 years, and we have two amazingly intelligent miniature Australian Shepherds, Indio and Charley, who keep us busy.
When I’m not working, I can be found traveling the world. We have been to 11 countries so far and we hope to continue to expand our adventures. I also like to leverage my high attention to detail and project management skills when dabbling in home remodeling and interior design. I come up with crazy design schemes and my patient husband implements my ideas, doing all the skilled and hard labor work. We are now close to the end of a complete remodel of our 1952 house. I cannot wait to be done with this project that has taken us about three years to complete…I can almost see the light!
I am truly excited to get to know ALL UAI’s members, so please reply to this discussion post to introduce yourself. Give a little of yourself and you will be surprised at how much you get in return through your valuable, purpose-built relationships via UAI.
Like I said, I have only been with UAI for about five months, but I’m already having so much fun and learning a lot from all of you! We have a lot of positive updates coming soon and we are evolving, with your input, to better meet your needs and goals, and I can’t wait to share these things with you. You must stay tuned into UAI’s Member-Only Community to learn more within the next few months. We will also be announcing some new things and some updates during the unique and exciting event we have coming in June 2020, UA Summit Reimagined!
Introduce yourself, learn more about others, and connect through UAI!
Stay safe and healthy,

Hello friends –
My name is Jennifer Gary and I am a Marketing Manager at Entergy am live in Entergy’s HQ city of New Orleans. As a Marketing Manager, I am keenly interested in Data Driven Marketing and the excitement that can come from combining science with the art of marketing. I’m biased, but really, what could be more fun as a profession? I attended my first UAI conference in New Orleans in 2016. I was hooked. Have so enjoyed attending the Summit and UAI Week’s whenever possible, presenting when I could, and participating in different Work Groups. I look forward to emerging from CV-19 shelter at home days to a robust gathering of UAI in the fall! I can’t think of an organization for work that I participate in that provides more real, applicable, opportunities to learn from both experts and colleagues than UAI.
Under normal circumstances, outside of work, I enjoy the life of a busy New Orleanian. I ride in one of the largest Mardi Gras parades, attend numerous activities my two sons are involved with, and sing with two semi-professional classical music groups- another activity that combines art with science!
Hope everyone stays safe and well and I look forward to seeing old friends at the next UAI and meeting new ones.

Hi there. What we’ve been using is a combination of fields, we have SIC codes in our customer system (but those are only captured when the customer first becomes a gas or electric customer through our New Business process not updated through move in/move out processes) and a revenue class field where we identify attributes such as hospital, etc. The data quality isn’t great but its the best we have. We don’t capture NAICS code or anything else in our systems.

Thank you, @Jennifer and @Jim, for introducing yourself! I absolutely love reading new introductions from members every day on this Introduce Yourself thread. It is great to understand the many different roles within our membership and within utility companies that are interested in and use analytics to drive business decision or to combine the science of data with the art of marketing, etc.
Keep your intros coming! I look forward to reading even more this week.
Thanks to you all! Stay safe and well.

I believe I am one of the few “regulatory” folks on this community of practice. My name is Jim Woodward and I have been a regulatory analyst with the Washington Utilities & Transportation Commission (WA-UTC) for a little over a year. At the WA-UTC my focus has been on conservation & energy planning. This natural gas community has decided relevance for me as I am also the staff POC for one of the gas utilities regulated within the State of WA. Prior to joining the Commission, I was a project manager with the U.S. Dept of Energy’s Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) for 5 years. Moving from Eastern to Western WA has afforded my family of 5 decidedly more rainy days but also a host of beautiful Pacific NW parks and scenery to explore. That is, when we’re not sheltering in place!
I look forward getting to know others within this community.

Leslie,
The email that was sent out informing everyone of the change had the previous date of April 15-17. However, when I went to register it showed the updated date for June. Subject: Important Information Regarding UA Summit 2020UA Summit Reimagined – Online in June
Dear UAI Members,
This week the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommended that no gatherings with 50 people or more take place for the next eight weeks in order to slow the spread of COVID-19. The worldwide emergency has created undeniable risk and concern around personal contact and travel. Based on recent developments in the U.S. and feedback from our membership, the UA Summit 2020 San Francisco event planned for April 15-17 will no longer take place in person, and instead we will relaunch as a virtual event in June 2020.
UA Summit exists for our industry to come together and engage, share and learn. We are excited to move to a virtual event model for our membership and attendees, UA Summit Reimagined.
UA Summit Reimagined is a 3-day conference that will take place 100% online. This multi-faceted virtual event experience will feature utility-led webinars, panel discussions via podcast, Lightning Talk videos, and discussion forums. Our UAI membership and attendees are asking for a virtual solution so they may continue a best-in-class idea exchange. We can and will deliver insights and perspective from the best minds in the industry.
Over the next few weeks you will receive more information about UA Summit Reimagined. We will provide the same content as originally planned and some new elements will be added to the program, thanks to technology in an online format.
The next opportunity to participate in an in-person UAI event will be Utility Analytics Week 2020, hosted by Oncor Electric Delivery, September 30-October 2, 2020 at the Gaylord Texan in Dallas, TX. Call for speakers and registration is now open!
The UAI team appreciates your support and our community’s health and safety are of the utmost importance to us. Please let us know if you have any questions.
We will be in contact soon with more details about UA Summit Reimagined and how UAI Members can get involved and have a little fun while they’re at this unique and exciting event experience.
Sincerely,
Leslie
