Load Forecasting in regard to COVID-19
Posted by Leslie Cook (Adm) on May 18, 2020 at 7:03 amUAI members have quite a few questions about load forecasting as it relates to the COVID-19 pandemic. Last week we hosted a series of Real-Talk Roundtables, so members could share information about how they are handling the situation. During the roundtable about load forecasting, there were a lot more questions than answers. Members just didn’t have enough data yet to be able to share insights on the questions.
Members that attended the roundtable on load forecasting during COVID-19 requested that I post the questions discussed during the roundtable to UAI Connect. We hope to broaden the pool of members that could possibly provide their input on the questions. Please find the list of questions below in regard to load forecasting during COVID-19. Please reply to this post to provide your answers and input to any of the questions below, or to send additional questions on this topic. Thanks so much to you all!
- What are your challenges with load forecasting and workforce optimization. The load and the workforce both “look” different in the current environment; so it would be interesting to see how utility leaders are managing this change and, where applicable, applying analytics to get ahead of these challenges.
- In regard to Corporate Energy Forecasting (CEF), where have you been able to use real-time AMI data to study how energy usage has changed and create forecasts of what things might look like as the community at large transitions back to work?
- How has your utility adjusted its short-term and long-term load forecasts to account for a stay-at-home order and/or economic recession?
- Impacts on Forecasting:
- How are load forecasts being adjusted for the impacts of COVID-19 given the fact that there is very limited data available – are you waiting for more data, or are you making assumptions based on current knowledge?
- What sort of assumptions are you making regarding the persistence of COVID-19 impacts – are you assuming a “new normal”, meaning that you expect permanent changes to your load; or do you expect that load should “revert to the mean” after 2, 3, 5, years?
- Do you expect revenue to be a direct function of loads, or are you factoring in greater defaults/deferrals as a result of large portions of the economy potentially facing financial hardship or, even, bankruptcy?
- Do you plan to develop strategies for regulatory recovery – meaning building the case for rate increases to cover the impacts of these changes?

Hello UAI Members,
Thank you to everyone who attended yesterday’s third and final roundtable discussion on COVID-19! This discussion had a much more granular focus, hitting on questions such as:
- What data modeling are you doing for COVID-19 analytics?
- Will this event result in expansion of your resiliency team?
- What system or service-class load impacts are utilities seeing under stay-at-home orders?
- How have these impacts changed with changes in the weather?
- What use cases can you share in regard to your load analytics, payment analytics and workforce planning in regard to COVID-19?
Special thanks to all of our members who submitted questions and were involved in the discussion. We also thank our members who were willing to share some of their dashboards/reporting during yesterday’s meeting. Please continue to let us know what questions you have so our team can do our best to facilitate further discussion and supply relevant content. For a full recording and slide deck please click here.

Monday, May, 18 at 12:00 pm MT (11am PT / 1pm CT / 2pm ET)
PRE-REGISTER TODAY!- What data modeling are you doing for COVID-19 analytics?
- Will this event result in expansion of your resiliency team?
- What system or service-class load impacts are utilities seeing under stay-at-home orders?
- How have these impacts changed with changes in the weather?
- For utilities, who has suspended disconnections for non-payment? How have you adjusted your revenue forecasts to account for arrears?
- What use cases can you share in regard to your load analytics, payment analytics and workforce planning in regard to COVID-19?
- Has your company developed any specific dashboards, reporting, or predictive analytics related to COVID-19?
- Questions not specifically related to analytics, but still questions that members want to discuss with other members:
- What will be the residual effects of the COVID-19 work at home environment? More people will be working from home permanently? Will your company have people working from home once a week, twice a week?
- With much of our workforce now tele-working, how is the reliability (or lack thereof) of your various interconnection technologies, such as WebEx, Zoom, Slack, etc.?
- In addition to those third party technologies, we are also very reliant on our own corporate networks to be able to access our work-related files and communicate with our colleagues. While I have experienced very little in the way of issues personally, I know that has not been the case for some of my colleagues. So, my question for the group is, what steps, if any, are your firms taking (or investments that you are making) to either improve these technologies, or to provide additional alternative technologies, so that if one tech fails, your associates have the option to use a different solution?
We look forward to seeing you online soon for UAI Real-Talk Roundtables!
Thanks!

Subject: Quick Poll: Has Your Access to Zoom Been Banned or Restricted? Thanks Martin! I will share the results in a few days.
I’ll be honest… I LOVE Zoom! I understand the concern from organizations regarding the security and privacy issues that took place right at the start of the pandemic. With safety at top of mind, organizations acted quickly and banned or restricted (browser only) the use of Zoom. We have made our own adjustments here at UAI to protect our/your use of it. I have been keeping up to date with our IT team on Zoom’s response to these issues. The following was shared with me from IT. I sure hope it is not too late for Zoom! I hope they can rebound! I’m a fan!
“Zoom has been moving fast on the security issues that have been reported. Besides the items noted below, they are releasing v5, which revolves around security. Here are the details:
- On May 30th, 2020, Zoom will enable GCM encryption across the entire Zoom platform, providing increased protection for meeting data. After May 30, 2020, all Zoom clients on older versions will receive a forced upgrade when trying to join meetings as GCM Encryption will be fully enabled across the Zoom platform. Please begin updating all your clients to Zoom 5.0 now. Zoom admins, visit our 5.0 IT administrator page for more detailed instructions on updating your endpoints to ensure they will be able to support GCM encryption once we cut over on May 30.
- Report a User Feature: Meeting hosts and co-hosts can report a user in their meeting who is misusing the Zoom platform. Found in the Security icon, the option sends a report to Zoom’s Trust & Safety team for review. The report can include a specific offense, description, and optional screenshot. The Report a User function is on by default but can be turned off at the account, group, and user level in the Zoom web portal.
- Leaving/Ending Meeting Enhancements: With this new UI update, hosts can clearly decide between ending or leaving a meeting. If the host leaves, they can now easily select a new host and have the confidence that the right person is left with host privileges. The host will now be required to assign a new host when leaving the meeting. Additionally, the pop-up message asking if the host would like to leave or end the meeting will now be displayed by the Leave button.
- Setting to Allow Sharing of Cloud Recordings: Account owners and admins can enable or disable shared cloud recordings to prevent users from sharing their cloud recordings. This setting is available for individual recordings and at the account, group, and user level and can be locked at the group or account level.
- Add Expiration Date for Shared Cloud Recordings: Users can now choose to expire the link for a cloud recording after a set number of days or on a custom date. This setting is available for individual recordings and at the account, group, and user level and can be locked at the group or account level.
- Minimum Password Length of 6 Characters for Meeting and Shared Recording Passwords: The minimum password length for both meeting and shared recording passwords will now be 6 characters.
- Profile Picture Control: Account admins and hosts can disable the ability for participants to show their profile picture and also prevent them from changing it in a meeting.
- Show the Connected Data Center: Users can see which data center they are connected to by clicking on by clicking on the info icon at the top left of the client window.
- Select Data Center Regions when Scheduling a Meeting: Users can now select which data center regions they would like their in meeting traffic to use when scheduling a meeting.
- [Breaking API Changes] New Password Requirements: This new setting allows account owners and admins to set meeting password and recording password requirements (on the account settings page).”

Subject: Introduce YourselfHello UAI Members,
I’m excited to try something new on UAI’s Member-Only Community. I want to not only make this forum a place for work and professional connections to take place on a daily basis, a place to ask each other questions, find answers and exchange knowledge and share information, I want to make it a fun environment to help us all de-stress, get to know each other a little better, and build bonds and friendships of a lifetime.
One of the coolest things about the UAI community is seeing members make connections with one another-it’s incredible to watch personal and professional relationship and friendships begin, grow, evolve, and last. The more relationships that are built between us and the more we get to know each other, the more valuable our work exchanges will become. We open up, we share more, we learn more and we all become so much better together!
Our community gets bigger every day. Many of you already know one another, while others are brand-new faces. I feel like it’s time that we (both new members and established ones) take a little time to introduce ourselves.
- Share your name
- Where you’re from
- How long you’ve worked in utility analytics
- I also encourage you to share non-invasive personal tidbits about yourself, i.e. what you like to do for fun, your hobbies, your pet peeves, or even your favorite memes, of course keeping it in good taste. Share things that will help us all get to know you better
I think it is important to have a little fun while we work and enjoy each other’s company. Please, use the UAI Member-Only Community as a place to work hard and play hard, enjoy, laugh, and have some fun.
I’ll kick us off, and please know you can include as much or little detail in your introduction. I’m wordy, so I went all out:
I’m Leslie, UAI’s membership & digital engagement manager. I’ve been with UAI for almost five months and I’m passionate about connecting members who share similar interests and challenges, and providing them with benefits, experiences, and tools they need to solve their problems and improve their organizations. I enthusiastically joined UAI to help improve and evolve the UAI membership value, as well as manage UAI’s collection of Communities. I am a strategic program director, dynamic business leader, and expert facilitator with over 20 years of experience. To learn even more about my professional work or to connect with me, visit my profile on UAI’s member-only site or LinkedIn. Please reach out to me directly at any time if you have questions or need anything from UAI. I can be reached at lcook@endeavorb2b.com or 646-693-5965.
I’m a Texas girl at heart, born and raised in a small town in north Texas, and then I headed out west to graduate from Texas Tech University (Go Red Raiders!). After school I moved to Colorado and I’ve lived all along the front range for the last 22 years, settling in Denver for the last six years, and I still have a Texas accent (You can take the girl out of Texas, but you can’t take the Texas accent out of the girl!). I’ve been married to my best friend from high school for 17 years, and we have two amazingly intelligent miniature Australian Shepherds, Indio and Charley, who keep us busy.
When I’m not working, I can be found traveling the world. We have been to 11 countries so far and we hope to continue to expand our adventures. I also like to leverage my high attention to detail and project management skills when dabbling in home remodeling and interior design. I come up with crazy design schemes and my patient husband implements my ideas, doing all the skilled and hard labor work. We are now close to the end of a complete remodel of our 1952 house. I cannot wait to be done with this project that has taken us about three years to complete…I can almost see the light!
I am truly excited to get to know ALL UAI’s members, so please reply to this discussion post to introduce yourself. Give a little of yourself and you will be surprised at how much you get in return through your valuable, purpose-built relationships via UAI.
Like I said, I have only been with UAI for about five months, but I’m already having so much fun and learning a lot from all of you! We have a lot of positive updates coming soon and we are evolving, with your input, to better meet your needs and goals, and I can’t wait to share these things with you. You must stay tuned into UAI’s Member-Only Community to learn more within the next few months. We will also be announcing some new things and some updates during the unique and exciting event we have coming in June 2020, UA Summit Reimagined!
Introduce yourself, learn more about others, and connect through UAI!
Stay safe and healthy,

Hi Everyone!
I am Garr Williams and work as the Manager of Data and Analytics in the Strategy team at Orlando Utilities Commission. I am new-er to OUC and to utilities in general – 1.5 years. I am a recovering management consultant where I specialized in Data Analytics, Org Change Mgt, and Complex Project Mgt for over 15 years.I lead the Data and Analytics Center of Excellence at OUC made up of 50+ executives, directors, managers, and analysts. Our focus is standing up (and getting adoption to) analytics governance practices. (It is a great group of people!)
We have been in Orlando for over 20 years, and surprisingly, only go to the theme parks a couple of times a year.
I earned my undergrad and grad degrees from Georgia Southern University (Go Eagles – True Blue!)

Stay safe and healthy,
Leslie

Hello everyone,
In response to our COVID-19 Granular discussion this past Monday, I wanted to pose a few questions to the group that we didn’t get time to discuss. Please see below and don’t be afraid to pose additional questions as well. We look forward to your input!
- Is your utility implementing TEAMS? If yes, we hear there have been some struggles with it, especially TEAMS governance, so how is your utility handling this?
Thanks!

Subject: Your Invited to a Series of UAI Real-Talk Roundtables on COVID-19Hello UAI Members,
You told UAI that you desire to hold collaborative, candid discussions with fellow members regarding the COVID-19 pandemic to help you gain a better understanding of how each of your organizations are dealing with the situation. UAI is delighted to bring you together during special member-exclusive Real-Talk Roundtables.
Learn more information about the Real-Talk Roundtables below and register today to attend these timely events!
In regard to these roundtables, some members said they want to maintain a strategic focus while other members want to get a little more granular during the discussion. After asking our members to submit questions on topics they want to discuss, we actually scheduled three different virtual Real-Talk Roundtables. Each virtual roundtable will be scheduled for 1-hour. Join us for one or all three of these interactive discussions to ask questions and get answers from partnered collaboration between UAI members. During each of these roundtables, we will start with the questions recorded below, each of which were submitted in advance by UAI members. We will then move on to your real-time questions, so be prepared to bring your questions to the table during these collaborative sessions. What to expect during Real-Talk Roundtables?
Engage in lively discussions, exchange knowledge, share information, learn with each other and help one another move forward during these unprecedented times brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic. During Real-Talk Roundtables, we encourage you to get to know one another, turn on your video, and truly engage in the conversation (video not required, but encouraged). The more you put into the discussion, the more you will get out of it. We look forward to “seeing” you online soon!Real-Talk Roundtable: A Strategic Focus on COVID-19
Thursday, May 14 at 10:00 am MT (9am PT / 11am CT / 12pm ET)
PRE-REGISTER TODAY!- What information is helpful for leadership at your organization to view or monitor as we begin talking about returning to work? Do you have any examples of how you are providing this information you could share? What are some strategic questions that leadership are asking you in regards to analytics related to COVID-19?
- What is your organization doing analytically in response to the COVID-19 pandemic?
- How is the COVID-19 pandemic affecting certain types of utilities?
- Do you plan to develop strategies for regulatory recovery – meaning building the case for rate increases to cover the impacts of these changes?
- How has Covid-19 affected development projects? Has your company circled the wagons and are just keeping the lights on? Have projects been put on hold and/or is money/resources being reallocated?
Real-Talk Roundtable: A Focus on Load Forecasting for COVID-19
Friday, May 15 at 10:00 am MT (9am PT / 11am CT / 12pm ET)
PRE-REGISTER TODAY!- What are your challenges with load forecasting and workforce optimization.
Real-Talk Roundtable: A Granular Focus on COVID-19
Hi Blake,
The poll is on the “Ask your Network” homepage here. If you are reviewing the page from a desktop, it will be on the top right. If you are reviewing the page from a mobile device, it will be in about the middle of the page, so you will need to scroll down a bit. The new weekly poll is meant to be a fun/friendly poll to help us all stay connected and positive. I hope you enjoy it.
Thanks!

Can you try to view the poll again, please? I think we fixed it and you should be able to take the poll now. Let me know either way, so I can be 100% sure we fixed the issue. This should be a fun Friday activity.
Thanks so much!
Leslie

Subject: The UAI Ask Your Network Poll is Here!Hello UAI members,
I hope all is well! It’s been a few weeks since the launch of our latest website update and we couldn’t be more pleased with the feedback. For everyone that’s taken time to reach out to us directly, we thank you and encourage others to continue giving us their feedback as well.
One new feature we’re launching in this community is the Ask Your Network Poll which, as you can see on the community homepage here, is a fun/friendly poll to help us stay connected and positive. We’ll be updating each week with a new question so we encourage you visit back periodically and get involved. If you have any questions or are having trouble seeing the poll please reach out to myself and I’ll be happy to help.
Also if you have a fun polling question idea, we’re all ears!
Thanks everyone and we look forward to your input.
