    Hello UAI Members,

Happy Friday! I hope you are well.

I will be providing a countdown to the deadline to submit your nominations for the UAI Excellence Awards, starting today and going through next week…

As of today, Friday morning, August 21, you have seven (7) business days left to submit your nominations for the awards! The deadline to submit is Monday, August 31, 2020 at 11:59 pm PT (Yes, that actually gives you East Coasters until 2:59 am ET on September 1)!

As I previously mentioned, we’ve simplified our nomination process. You can now complete and submit the simplified form, and then a UAI staff member will reach out to you directly to answer any questions you may have about submitting your nomination and work with you to complete your full nomination.

Complete the simplified form at https://uaievents.wufoo.com/forms/uai-excellence-awards-nomination-form/

Why should you submit a nomination?

    • Raise your profile. Across all sizes and types of organizations, award winners and finalists benefit from industry exposure through a coordinated PR campaign and exposure to some of the most influential people in the profession. Our program offers unique PR and marketing collateral through articles and interviews and featured in our newsletter and on UAI Connect.
    • Measure your performance. By entering, you will be able to gauge how your organization, utility analytics team, and professionals compare against the very best.
    • Acknowledge your team’s efforts. In the new energy economy of utility analytics, achievements are easy to overlook. The process of completing the entry form allows you to pause and consider what (and who) contributed to your success and where you can go from here. Bonus: finalists are strongly encouraged to attend the awards ceremony and celebrate success with their team!
    • Impress your leadership. Your leadership wants to leverage and promote a winning team and company, and reputation is often a factor in gaining approval for new and exciting projects. Show your leadership that you are part of a winning team, one that has won an award for excellence in innovation.
    • Retain existing employees. Winning awards can improve employee morale, too. When employees are proud of their team, organization, or company’s achievements, they have an excuse to brag to their friends and family.
    • Attract new employees. Awards can help you attract the best new employees. People are drawn to award-winning businesses because they want to work for successful companies. In today’s experience economy, potential employees are looking at awards and company rankings to make career decisions.
    • Celebrate your achievements as a team. Celebrate your team’s success by attending the awards ceremony at UA Week. Each finalist receives one complimentary pass for the event and a discount code to help you bring even more team members!

Please let me know if you have any questions.

    Thanks!

         Leslie

    Hello UAI Members,

First, I want to bring your attention to two valuable shares that have been posted this week regarding the COVID-19 data visualizations…

    1. Snohomish PUD COVID-19 data visualization (scroll down past original post)
    2. WEC Energy Group COVID-19 data visualization

Second, If you have COVID-19 data visualizations to share and want to participate in the “best visualization of the month contest” in August, please make sure to reply to this post by end of day Monday, August 24! On Tuesday morning, I will reply to this post with a survey, so members of UAI can vote for their favorite data visualization (see original post for example criteria to help select your fav). The member favorite will receive pride and glory, bragging rights, and a $10 Starbucks gift card!

Our hope is this will be a valuable monthly exercise that is an opportunity to share and learn from one another, help encourage a little spirit of competition, and that you will have some fun!

If you have any questions, please reach out by replying to this post or contacting me directly at lcook@utilityanalytics.com or 646-693-5965.

    Thanks!

Snohomish PUD has a well established Analytics team and performance management dashboard practice. When COVID-19 hit WA state and we stood up our Incident Management Team (IMT) in mid-March we knew that we wanted to be able to monitor both what was happening with COVID on the ground and the impact of business practice changes we were making as part of our mobilization and response efforts.

The first version of the dashboard went live on March 23 and has been iterated since then. There are several audiences for various parts of the dashboard beyond just the IMT – our Executive Leadership Team, our elected Commission, and our employees.

The dashboard updates daily and all of the data (with one exception) is fully automated. The data comes from a mix of internal systems that include SAP, SQL, Avaya, and SharePoint plus a few CSV and Text files. External data is coming from WA State posted files and GitHub. We use Python in various places to transfer, clean, aggregate, and post the data. The dashboard is hosted in the PowerBI cloud service which enables dynamic cross filtering.

I’ve included a selection of screenshots below.

The data below is aggregated by week. Call topics are derived from SAP interaction records associated to the call.

Customer Support – programs and efforts in response to COVID impacts on our community.

    Payment and Collection Impacts

Load Impacts Against Budget Forecast and Weather Adjusted Budget Forecast

Unemployment in our service territory (we serve Snohomish County plus Camano Island)

    COVID-19 in WA State

    COVID-19 in the US

Subject: Introducing… Best Visualization of the Month Contest – August 2020

    Dear UAI Members,

In collaboration with the UAI Connect Ambassadors — a team of member volunteers that help drive engagement and encourage member collaboration on UAI Connect — UAI will be implementing a new monthly contest on the Ask Your Network forum on UAI Connect. Each month, we will post a themed “Best Visualization of the Month” contest. The monthly theme will be selected by our UAI Connect Ambassadors. We also encourage you to submit your ideas for monthly themes on an ongoing basis. You can submit those to me at lcook@utilityanalytics.com or just post your ideas on the Ask Your Network discuss forum.

This monthly contest is set-up to encourage you to post your data visualizations in regard to the given month’s theme. All during the month, we hope you will reply to that month’s contest post to share your data visualizations (no matter how simple, functional, elaborate, or complicated) and include a short description as it relates to your visualization. You can attached your visualization to your reply or embed it within the reply.

One week prior to the end of the month, we will reply to the post with a survey link that will poll members to select their favorite visualization. When selecting your favorite each month, consider criteria like, how automated is the visualization, where is the visualization pulling the data, how easy is the visualization to understand, etc. (of course this criteria is not required, but we wanted to pass along some example criteria to consider while selecting your favorite visualization).

We will close the poll at the end of the day on the last business day of the month. We will announce the member favorite at the beginning of the next month. The member favorite will receive pride and glory, bragging rights, and a $10 Starbucks gift card! Our hope is this will be a valuable monthly exercise that is an opportunity to share and learn from one another, help encourage a little spirit of competition, and that you will have some fun!

The first monthly “Best Visualization of the Month” theme for August is COVID 19 Dashboards! Please reply, starting now, to this post to share your internal visualizations that you use to track COVID 19. I will send out a survey link on Monday, August 24, 2020 to submit your votes for your favorite visualization for August. I will announce the member favorite visualization on Tuesday, September 1, 2020 and I will also post the next theme on this day.

    Let the games begin!

    Have fun,

         Leslie

Tacoma Power has an emerging Analytics team and we developed the following COVID Recovery Dashboard as a means to help provide insight into several different elements our Senior Leaders were looking at on a regular basis. Compliments to Andrew Braeger and his team, especially Abel Debela, for taking the lead on this dashboard, working with all the subject matter experts, and all the great work to help grow our Analytics program for Tacoma Power!
