A Template to Help You Grow Involvement in UAI within Your Utility
Hello UAI Members,
Happy Holidays and we wish you a joyous New Year! We have enjoyed watching you connect and collaborate with each other throughout 2020. You have shared, learned, and grown over this last year by using the UAI Connect platform to communicate your challenges, successes, and general inquiries with each other. We want to see that momentum continue and expand in 2021 and beyond.
For those actively posting new messages and answering questions on Ask Your Network in UAI Connect; we thank you! We want to encourage you to continue this action and post even more in 2021! We love seeing your engagement with each other and we want more connection and collaboration for you in the new year, so you can continue your journey to transform into a data decision-based company and mature your analytics practices.
For members who are using UAI Connect as a resource, reviewing posts and downloading research and resources, but not necessarily posting your questions, comments, or challenges; we thank you and see you! We are so glad you are here and we encourage you to step out of the shadows and start sharing your thoughts on Ask Your Network. The more the merrier and the more we have actively collaborating on UAI Connect the better for all…more sharing and learning opportunities for everyone!
The more you give the more you get (I believe in ten-fold)! There is an old saying: It is better to give than to receive, which always rings true this time of year, but let’s keep this alive every day throughout the year on UAI Connect. You can think about this in a couple different ways… Drop something off, pick something up. Dare to give what you most want. If you want to mature your analytics practices, help those around you mature theirs. If you want certain connections and contacts, share yours with others. You get the point. 😊
Starting now and moving into the future, we want to help you get others from your utility involved in UAI. We want current UAI members to have even more utility analytics professionals to connect and collaborate with, so we are providing you with a template that you can share out to anyone within your utility. Don’t limit sharing it with those on your team. Share it across your utility to those currently working with utility analytics and those interested in learning more about utility analytics; no matter their role or department. Please find this template in the Ask Your Network library for year-round access and I have also attached it to this message for easy access now.

Don’t forget to post your data visualizations/dashboards for the December 2020 Data Visualization of the Month Contest.
The theme for the December 2020 “Best Visualization of the Month” contest is “Budgeting & Forecasting”.
- Share your data visualizations/dashboards for analytics around budgeting, forecasting, starting over in 2021 (O&M expenses, capital expenses)
- Share any and all analytics visualizations that help you prepare for the new fiscal year
Due to the holiday break, we will run the December contest through January 4, 2021. We will post the poll to select the member favorite on this date and announce the winner on January 11, 2021.
The member favorite will receive pride and glory, bragging rights, and a $10 Starbucks gift card! As always, our hope is this will be a valuable exercise that is an opportunity to share and learn from one another, help encourage a little spirit of competition, and that you will have some fun!

I am a little late this month, but better late than never! It is time to announce the December 2020 “Best Visualization of the Month” contest theme!
Please note that we did not have a member favorite in November for the contest. There were no submissions for the November theme, just questions and members hoping others would share…looks like we need to revisit the November 2020 theme…perhaps members will have more information to share on the theme in the future. Please know it is never too late to share on a monthly theme! You can always go back to any previous month and share…sharing and learning from each other is what is important!
Now I present to you the theme for the December 2020 “Best Visualization of the Month” contest…
December 2020 Theme: “Budgeting & Forecasting”
- Share your data visualizations/dashboards for analytics around budgeting, forecasting, starting over in 2021 (O&M expenses, capital expenses)
- Share any and all analytics visualizations that help you prepare for the new fiscal year
ICYMI… What is the UAI Best Visualization of the Month contest?
In collaboration with the UAI Connect Ambassadors — a team of member volunteers that help drive engagement and encourage member collaboration on UAI Connect — UAI will host a monthly contest on the Ask Your Network forum on UAI Connect. Each month, we will post a themed “Best Visualization of the Month” contest. The monthly theme will be selected by our UAI Connect Ambassadors. We also encourage you to submit your ideas for monthly themes on an ongoing basis. You can submit those to me at lcook@utilityanalytics.com or just post your ideas on the Ask Your Network discuss forum.This monthly contest is set-up to encourage you to post your data visualizations in regard to the given month’s theme. All during the month, we hope you will reply to that month’s contest post to share your data visualizations (no matter how simple, functional, elaborate, or complicated) and include a short description as it relates to your visualization. You can attached your visualization to your reply or embed it within the reply.
One week prior to the end of the month, we will post a message to vote with a survey link that will poll members to select their favorite visualization. When selecting your favorite each month, consider criteria like, how automated is the visualization, where is the visualization pulling the data, how easy is the visualization to understand, etc. (of course this criteria is not required, but we wanted to pass along some example criteria to consider while selecting your favorite visualization).
We will close the poll at the end of the day on the last business day of the month. We will announce the member favorite at the beginning of the next month. The member favorite will receive pride and glory, bragging rights, and a $10 Starbucks gift card! Our hope is this will be a valuable monthly exercise that is an opportunity to share and learn from one another, help encourage a little spirit of competition, and that you will have some fun!
