September (2021) Member Spotlight: Ankush Agarwal (Exelon Utilities)
Ankush Agarwal is an active UAI member and provides outstanding influence and contributions to the UAI community through any of our multiple channels, including, but not limited to engagement on UAI Connect, volunteering with UAI, involvement and/or leadership in monthly Community Conversations, and/or speaking at UAI events, plus so much. As thanks, we are featuring him in the UAI Member Spotlight. Ankush Agarwal is the Director of Advanced Analytics at Exelon Utilities where he is responsible for providing analytics solutions for Technical Services, T&S, Distribution Operations and Safety organizations. His team collaborates with business leaders and experts across the Exelon family of six utility companies and their key focus is driving cost benefits for grid investments, improving operational efficiency, and enhancing organization safety.
Kevin: How did you get into the utility analytics industry?
Member: I joined Constellation Energy, which was later acquired by Exelon, about 11 years ago. I spent 5 years helping to develop analytic capabilities for our audit, controls and finance organizations. As Exelon utilities was building out its strategy for Grid Transmission and Distribution analytics and looking for a lead, I jumped at the opportunity.
Kevin: What project have you enjoyed working on most in your career?
Member: I have always been passionate about enabling awareness and adoption of analytics across organizations to help accelerate development of an analytics-driven culture. The opportunity to bring this to life with our incredibly talented leaders, employees, and partners, with the Exelon Analytics Academy program, has been an incredibly enjoyable and rewarding experience.
Kevin: What has been your biggest professional challenge and how did you work through it?
Member: We are a company of critical thinkers and innovators, working to reimagine and reshape what it means to be an energy provider. This is not easy, we’ve had to continuously challenge ourselves, think about how our teams can play a larger, more integral part of that mission. Networking and collaborating with the brilliant employees and leaders within Exelon and leveraging organizations like UAI to extend our network has been essential.
Kevin: If you could go back in time and give yourself one piece of advice before entering the utility analytics industry, what would it be?
Member: I wished I had joined it sooner! There is so much to learn.
Kevin: What would you like to talk to fellow colleagues and members about in UAI Connect? Or, what issues or topics would you like to see more discussions on in UAI Connect?
Member: UAI, its communities and conferences are a great one-stop resource for learning about how utilities are leveraging advanced analytics. I’m super excited about Teresa Hansen joining your team – I’d love to see UAI, T&D World and EnergyTech provide content and resources which help our data scientists especially those joining us from other industries, get a good understanding of the breadth and depth of Utility Transmission, Distribution and Gas operations, with the unique lens of understanding this complex space better to help them identify and develop better analytic solutions.
Kevin: Thank you so much for sharing with us and for being a highly engaged member of UAI!
Do you have any final thoughts, ideas, or comments you would like to share with your fellow UAI members?
Member: Thank you Kevin! I wanted to take this opportunity to say that it is always a pleasure to interact with the UAI team – Mark Johnson, Gina Weber, Leslie Cook, Erin Hardick, you, and your entire team – thank you for your dedication and commitment to serving our energy community!
