Blockchains, Crypto and Utilities
Posted by Ben Ettlinger on April 29, 2022 at 10:24 amBarron’s reports that Elon Musk’s purchase of Twitter will have a spiraling effect. What does that mean for crypto, blockchains and utilities going forward? Actually, I’m looking for someone who could address the topic for a session in our internal Analytics Community of Practice and potentially to speak to it for one of the UAI communities. the way I see it, energy trading, procurement contracts, could be ripe for blockchains and crypto.
Anyone game?

Chris, Ben and colleagues,
Hard to argue against planning and a single source of truth on datasets (especially, ahem, as a former planning professor). But exploratory analytics and support for self-service analytics are also important to consider. Our customers get a lot of value from those aspects of our products. Its democracy and not anarchy if you have routes back from individual exploration and discovery to systemic improvement. My favorite model is probably the “ML Ops” data science tools, including MLFlow (open source, from Databricks also mentioned below). This allows for an ‘official’ model and several ‘challengers’ and provides live statistics on all of them. It also tracks metadata in a very convenient way, which practically is very important in these kind of workflows. So in that kind of DS context, multiple folks can suggest and contribute alternatives, but there is an overall evaluation framework kept in place.
This is harder to do with things like dashboard layouts, because there are not agreed metrics. But we find it useful to run Delphi-like processes for this. For those not familiar, this is an old (RAND?) idea. You basically ask people to do parallel work in private, such as creating an analytics dashboard supporting a particular workflow. Then you bring them together in group, have them cross present, and figure out strengths and weaknesses of the various candidate dashboards. The key idea is to NOT do a committee meeting or design synthesis first, but rather to get a diversity of examples. This can be formalized if needed (for example if you need a record of decision), and done in multiple rounds.
As mentioned, metadata and catalogs can play a big role here. I’m not sure I have a clear favorite, since things are moving fast. But manually generating metadata can be very tedious and a big impediment to healthy sharing practices. So I’d certainly pay a lot of attention to those. Its a bit like survey design, where response rate varies non-linearly with length. For example, I used to do a lot of government work requiring enormous independent metadata files (maybe 200 items). It was torture. Then we were allowed by EPA to use a short form of metadata with perhaps 10 items and automated fill-in for the boilerplate items. Everyone used that without a single complaint. Not sure if others have the same experience.

Subject: Data responsibility and Data democratizationHello everyone,
Over the past six years MGE has been undergoing a digital transformation and an IT modernization effort. The essence of this project is to replace our mainframe and its applications including, Peoplesoft, and many of our homegrown applications that support them. We are replacing them with the Oracle stack including Cloud ERP, C2M (CIS and MDM) and the WAM (Asset management system). I am providing this context because it led to an explosion of data across our systems, and we are now starting to build out our data repositories to access this data. As we have been thinking through our data and pushing a Data democratization effort, we have concerns around educating our staff about how to use and how to share data. We have been thinking about creating a data responsibility document that we can share with staff who are not in data science or analytics.
My ask to the community is does anyone know of some good resources that would help us with this effort? In addition, if anyone has gone through a similar experience and can share their experience.
Much appreciated!

Hi Ben,
Very interesting topic and I agree, blockchain is a great platform for energy related transactions including energy performance contracting for energy efficiency programs. A paper on this topic that I co-authored with colleagues in Ireland can be found here: Blockchain in Energy Efficiency: Potential Applications and BenefitsMDPI remove preview Blockchain in Energy Efficiency: Potential Applications and Benefits Blockchain technology is ready to disrupt nearly every industry and business model, and the energy sector is no exception. Energy businesses across the world have already started exploring the use of blockchain technology in large-scale energy trading systems, peer-to-peer energy trading, project financing, supply chain tracking, and asset management among other applications. View this on MDPI >
At The Energy Authority, our Director of Technology Innovations, is our resident Blockchain guru. I believe he would make a great speaker for your community conversation. Happy to put you two in touch if that suits at all.Kind regards,

Subject: Introduce YourselfHello UAI members,
My name is Shraddha Sharma. I work for Entergy Services from past 2.5 years as data scientist in New Orleans. I got this opportunity to get familiar with Utility Analytics and latest advancements that utility companies are working on. I enjoy my work and am interested in meeting and learning from people who work on similar business problems.
I have done my masters in business analytics and project management from University of Connecticut and Bachelors in Information Technology. Although this is my first Utility company experience, my dad worked in a utility company all his life(back in India, where I am from) and I grew up hearing about, and seeing power generation very closely.
In my free time I like painting, reading and working out. I am excited to be part of UAI team and looking forward to meeting someday in person!

Subject: Introduce YourselfHello UAI Members,
I’m excited to try something new on UAI’s Member-Only Community. I want to not only make this forum a place for work and professional connections to take place on a daily basis, a place to ask each other questions, find answers and exchange knowledge and share information, I want to make it a fun environment to help us all de-stress, get to know each other a little better, and build bonds and friendships of a lifetime.
One of the coolest things about the UAI community is seeing members make connections with one another-it’s incredible to watch personal and professional relationship and friendships begin, grow, evolve, and last. The more relationships that are built between us and the more we get to know each other, the more valuable our work exchanges will become. We open up, we share more, we learn more and we all become so much better together!
Our community gets bigger every day. Many of you already know one another, while others are brand-new faces. I feel like it’s time that we (both new members and established ones) take a little time to introduce ourselves.
- Share your name
- Where you’re from
- How long you’ve worked in utility analytics
- I also encourage you to share non-invasive personal tidbits about yourself, i.e. what you like to do for fun, your hobbies, your pet peeves, or even your favorite memes, of course keeping it in good taste. Share things that will help us all get to know you better
I think it is important to have a little fun while we work and enjoy each other’s company. Please, use the UAI Member-Only Community as a place to work hard and play hard, enjoy, laugh, and have some fun.
I’ll kick us off, and please know you can include as much or little detail in your introduction. I’m wordy, so I went all out:
I’m Leslie, UAI’s membership & digital engagement manager. I’ve been with UAI for almost five months and I’m passionate about connecting members who share similar interests and challenges, and providing them with benefits, experiences, and tools they need to solve their problems and improve their organizations. I enthusiastically joined UAI to help improve and evolve the UAI membership value, as well as manage UAI’s collection of Communities. I am a strategic program director, dynamic business leader, and expert facilitator with over 20 years of experience. To learn even more about my professional work or to connect with me, visit my profile on UAI’s member-only site or LinkedIn. Please reach out to me directly at any time if you have questions or need anything from UAI. I can be reached at lcook@endeavorb2b.com or 646-693-5965.
I’m a Texas girl at heart, born and raised in a small town in north Texas, and then I headed out west to graduate from Texas Tech University (Go Red Raiders!). After school I moved to Colorado and I’ve lived all along the front range for the last 22 years, settling in Denver for the last six years, and I still have a Texas accent (You can take the girl out of Texas, but you can’t take the Texas accent out of the girl!). I’ve been married to my best friend from high school for 17 years, and we have two amazingly intelligent miniature Australian Shepherds, Indio and Charley, who keep us busy.
When I’m not working, I can be found traveling the world. We have been to 11 countries so far and we hope to continue to expand our adventures. I also like to leverage my high attention to detail and project management skills when dabbling in home remodeling and interior design. I come up with crazy design schemes and my patient husband implements my ideas, doing all the skilled and hard labor work. We are now close to the end of a complete remodel of our 1952 house. I cannot wait to be done with this project that has taken us about three years to complete…I can almost see the light!
I am truly excited to get to know ALL UAI’s members, so please reply to this discussion post to introduce yourself. Give a little of yourself and you will be surprised at how much you get in return through your valuable, purpose-built relationships via UAI.
Like I said, I have only been with UAI for about five months, but I’m already having so much fun and learning a lot from all of you! We have a lot of positive updates coming soon and we are evolving, with your input, to better meet your needs and goals, and I can’t wait to share these things with you. You must stay tuned into UAI’s Member-Only Community to learn more within the next few months. We will also be announcing some new things and some updates during the unique and exciting event we have coming in June 2020, UA Summit Reimagined!
Introduce yourself, learn more about others, and connect through UAI!

We don’t quite have a full blown Operations dashboard built… But we do have one centered around Power Generation. If you’d like, we can set up some time and I can show you what we’ve done.

We are beginning work with our executive team to build an executive level operations dashboard. As we all know, it’s easier to show the possible than to just explain it. : )
If anyone has a screen shot or a link to their current executive dashboard they would be willing to share, I would forever be in your debt!

I would also be interested in seeing more about your operations dashboard. We are getting similar requests from leadership here at PHI.
