Power BI Service governance
Posted by Jerry Casarella on October 24, 2023 at 4:12 amInterested in knowing how other companies are rolling our PowerBi Service at an enterprise level. We are now getting ready to implement Microsoft 365 and as part of that make PowerBi available to the whole enterprise. Wanted to connect and understand how others are organizing and managing at an enterprise level components such as: Workspaces, User Access, Security Groups, Apps, Audiences, etc. . Thanks in advance for your help !

Workspace: At EPE we are trying to limit workspace creation to the division level of our organization (ie: for accounting we created a ‘Controller’ workspace vs a workspace for each department (Tax, Financial, etc)). Also, we are working to limit workspace access to our team (Enterprise Advanced Analytics and IT at the Admin level, as well as any SME’s within the business unit that may need access to the dataset(s) on a case-by-case basis at either the member or contributor role (I can’t recall what the restrictions are for each role)).
App: Each workspace will have an App created and access to the App will be managed by assigning the appropriate Active Directory Groups to either the entire app, or the reports necessary within the app (I think this is the audience level).
User Access: We are working with IT to manage User access by creating Active Directory groups and assigning those groups to the necessary Apps/Reports.
We will also be using the Deployment Pipeline for new reports that are created going forward. This require Power BI Premium.
If you would like to discuss further, please let us know.

Hi Norma,
We would be happy to discuss maturity model assessments with you!
We have extensive experience in performing maturity models across all things data (data privacy, architecture, data science, data governance, data management, etc) and agile (product management, agile development).
We are currently in discussions with a southwest utility to start a data governance assessment using DMBOK.
DMBOK is one of several different maturity models (DCAM, Gartner, Stanford, etc) for evaluating Data Governance. We have found it is most effective to start with the DMBOK framework as a baseline maturity model and then tailor it towards our clients specific goals and needs.
Please let me know when would be the best chance to chat.
Thanks,

Subject: Maturity Assessments against DMBOXHello UAI Members,
Here at PG&E, we were looking at the UAI 2022 Analytics Maturity Assessment. According to Question #39 (page 35 of the 2022 AMA report) in the AMA report, it seems that utilities use the Data Management Association’s Data Management Body of Knowledge (DAMA-DMBOK). I’m sharing information about data management maturity from the UAI AMA with our senior leaders here at PG&E. Based on these discussions with leadership, we have a question, as follows.
What are utilities using for their maturity assessments against DMBOK? We are looking to know about a specific consultancy company/consultancy service that can help us conduct an evaluation of our level of maturity against the DMBOK framework.
We look forward to hearing from you.
Thanks!

Hi Norma,
We just completed a Data Management Assessment with a consultant, happy to share who offline. It was not specifically tied to the DMBOK, but assessed us across five standard area (Strategy, Architecture, Governance, Ethics, Talent). My one big takeaway from the exercise, is to make sure there are specific and actionable intervention plans tied to the assessment and then plan on redoing at regular time frequency.

Hi Luke: I saw your note to Norma, but found it interesting. Can you share with me the consultant you used for your maturity assessment? Also, can you also share whether you included ‘Analytics’ into the assessment (I assume it was embedded in the strategy, talent, technology components)? Also, how long did it take for that assessment to be completed (start to finish) and how easy (or hard) was it to get internal resources to help participate with the consultant? We are considering the same approach too, but haven’t yet settled on a consultant. Thanks much. Nolan Steiner/Avista (Spokane, WA)

Hello UAI Members,
Happy Wednesday and I hope all is well! While on site at UA Week (during a discussion around statistics) an attendee shared a great quote from Mark Twain which I wanted to share with you all below. I’m sure several of you have math/statistics quotes (both serious and funny!) and encourage you to share below alongside me.

Hello UAI Members,
If you’re having a gloomy weather day (like I’m having today in Jacksonville) then this #WisdomWednesday post is for you! Sometimes we all feel a little gloomy and need a little pick me up. Fortunately one of my favorite actors Channing Tatum has a funny quote for us today (and a much needed excuse to go for the double cheeseburger). Have a funny quote you would like to share? Cheer us up in the comments section below!
“Life is too short to miss out on the beautiful things, like a double cheeseburger!”
