Hi UAI team, Happy New Year!
This is Yong Li, data science manager at DTE Energy Electric Distribution Operation. Can you please help me with your inputs on using image analysis for storm damage assessment. This is in the space of Electric Power Delivery. When storms hit, utilities typically conduct an assessment on the severity of damage by the storm, such as number of broken poles, fallen power lines, trees, and other equipment. The assessment would be an important input to restoration resource plan and customer communications about power restoration expectations.
I understand that many utilities have used drones and / or helicopters to take pictures in the damage assessment process.
I would greatly appreciate it if you could share some descriptions related to this use case. In particular, please share how regularly image analysis is used. Is it used for storm only or normal days? Are the pictures sent to the back office and/or IT system almost real-time? Have you developed an ML model to pre-process them?
Additionally, have you estimated the business benefits in terms of man hours saved, reduction of outage duration, cost, etc.
    Thanks again!
    Yong Li

    Hello UAI Members,

Happy Wednesday! I feel like we’re flying through January as it’s already 1/17.

I (like many of you) started off the year with ambitious reading goals but wanted to begin with an all-time favorite, The Giver. If you’ve read The Giver I’m sure your familiar with the MANY great quotes throughout making it hard to select just one. The below quote came from a chapter I read recently and I immediately wrote down for this week’s #WisdomWednesday thread.

“If you were to be lost in the river, Jonas, your memories would not be lost with you. Memories are forever.”

I know everyone is reading a great book, what quote or quotes have stuck out to you in your reading? I’d love to hear from you in the reply section below!

    Hello UAI Members,

Happy New Year! It’s officially 2024 and I cannot wait to kick off another amazing year with you all. I’m also hoping everyone took some much deserved time to rest/recover and I look forward to hearing your holiday stories over the coming weeks.

I’ve been thinking for awhile how I would like to start our #WisdomWednesday thread for 2024. Rather than sharing a quote, I thought we could use today’s thread to list out one goal we wish to achieve this year (either personal or professional). The experts always say writing down your goals will help solidify them but today I want to take it one step forward and have you share with your UAI peers! I’ll share two of my goals to get us started. On a professional level I have several new ideas/initiatives I plan to launch right here on UAI Connect (stay tuned). On a personal level, I hope to overcome a (growing) fear of heights.

Who’s feeling brave? Help me populate this thread by hitting “reply” below!
