October Asset Health Analytics Follow Up + What’s Next!
Hello Asset Health Analytics Community Members,
Thank you to everyone who joined us last week for our “Solve My Problem” session! For those unable to attend, we discussed two key problems/challenges brought about during our “Getting to Know You Survey” and kickoff meeting which we’ve listed below:
-
PROBLEM 1: Transmission Line Inspection Process and Scenario
Facilitator: Chris Lyles, VP of Asset Planning & Management – Western Area Power Administration (WAPA)- How do you take transmission structure inspection data and use it to drive repair or replacement decisions at the transmission segment level? (i.e. Making asset replacement/maintenance decisions)
- Scenario: We are in the process of upgrading our transmission line inspection tool. This tool collects transmission line component’s condition which drives our t-line structure health. Problem: How do you ensure that the inspection tool accurately captures data and allows integration into our CMMS to perform asset health analytics and improve work management?
- PROBLEM 2: COTs Vs. In-House
Facilitator: Charlie Schaeffer, Director of IT – Ameren-
-
What are the pros and cons of commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) vs.in-house development of analytics platform selection?
-
Please catch up with a full recording and copy of our presentation deck HERE.
Next month we will be meeting Wednesday, November 18 at 12:30 PM – 2:00 PM CT for a special 90-minute session on “Utility AMI Stories: Harnessing the Power of AMI Data to Improve Asset Health & Performance.” This session will be part of Utility Analytics Week which again is 100% complimentary for members this year (Using code MEMBER20).
Please find more info on this session below and let me know ASAP if you do not have a calendar placeholder.

Join this UAI Asset Health Analytics Community Conversation to hear an introduction to AMI and to learn how multiple utilities are using AMI to improve asset health and performance. During this session, you will hear uses cases from the following utilities and the session will include Q&A and open discussion throughout each presentation to create an interactive and engaging environment. Come prepared to interact with our presenters and bring your questions.
-
- Charles Schaeffer, Director of IT at Ameren will cover an introduction to AMI and share example analytics use cases on how they are improving asset health and performance using AMI
- Yong Li, Data Science Manager, and his data science team at DTE Electric Distributions collaborated with AMI engineering, power quality engineering, and service operations to complete a project that used AMI voltage data in a Cloud platform to proactively identify customers who have over voltage problems related to certain assets (distribution transformers, regulators, and substation transformers). This project has been implemented in dispatching systems in early October 2020.
Facilitator: Christopher Lyles, VP of Asset Planning & Management – Western Area Power Administration (WAPA)
Speakers:
- Charles (Charlie) Schaeffer, Director of IT – Ameren
- Yong Li, Data Science Manager – DTE Energy
