Hello Asset Health Analytics Community Members,

I hope all is well! With August just kicking off, I wanted to reach out and get you excited for our August (2023) Asset Health Analytics Community Conversation. On Wednesday, August 23 at 2:00 PM CT we’ll be joined by Dr. Nanpeng Yu, Associate Professor, Electrical and Computer Engineering at University of California, Riverside who will be leading a discussion around, “Data-Driven Predictive Maintenance of Distribution Transformers.”

I’ll be providing more information on this session, including our Microsoft Teams credentials, one week prior to our meeting but you can always learn more about each of our upcoming Community Conversations on our Events Page HERE.

If you have any questions in the meantime please reach out to me at kpraet@utilityanalytics.com.

    Thanks!

Hello Asset Health Analytics Community Members,

I hope all is well! We are one week away from our August (2023) Asset Health Analytics Community Conversation and want to get you excited about the session taking place. On Wednesday, August 23 at 2:00 PM CT, we’ll be joined by Dr. Nanpeng Yu, Associate Professor, Electrical and Computer Engineering at University of California, Riverside who will be leading a discussion around, “Data-Driven Predictive Maintenance of Distribution Transformers.” As this discussion will be interactive, we encourage you to come prepared with questions and your insight.

Learn more about this session and our speaker below!

    Session Description:

This session covers a method for the predictive maintenance of distribution transformers. That is, a method of predicting which transformers are most likely to fail soon. Once predicted, such transformers may be subject to maintenance or replacement. This practice reduces the costs and increases the reliability of power distribution systems. The practice is common in transmission systems. In that domain, physical methods such as dissolved gas analysis see fantastic results. Data-driven techniques utilizing DGA data are also popular. But such methods are cost prohibitive for distribution systems. Instead, this paper proposes to utilize a data driven framework for the task which only uses readily available data. Such data include the transformers’ specification, loading, location, and weather-related information. Such data inspire the use of two suitable machine learning algorithms. The first is random forests. The second is the Random Undersampling with AdaBoost (RUSBoost) algorithm. These algorithms are tested on over 700,000 distribution transformers in Southern California. This test finds that both algorithms outperform the current state of practice. Further, it finds that the RUSBoost algorithm performs better than the Random Forest.

Speaker: Dr. Nanpeng Yu, Associate Professor, Electrical and Computer Engineering (University of California, Riverside)

Dr. Nanpeng Yu received his B.S. in Electrical Engineering from Tsinghua University, Beijing, China, in 2006. Dr. Yu received his M.S. degrees in Electrical Engineering and Economics and Ph.D. degree from Iowa State University in 2010. Before joining University of California, Riverside, Dr. Yu was a senior power system planner and project manager at Southern California Edison from Jan 2011 to July 2014.

Currently, he is an associate professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of California, Riverside, CA. Dr. Yu is the recipient of the Regents Faculty Fellowship and Regents Faculty Development award from the University of California. He received multiple best paper and prize paper awards from the IEEE Power and Energy Society General Meetings, IEEE Power and Energy Society Grand International Conference and Exposition Asia and the Second International Conference on Green Communications, Computing and Technologies.

Dr. Yu is the director of the Energy, Economics, and Environment Research Center at UC Riverside. Dr. Yu is also a cooperating faculty member of the department of computer science and engineering and department of Statistics. He currently serves as the chair of distribution system operation and planning subcommittee of IEEE Power and Energy Society and the chair for IEEE Power and Energy Society Working group of data-driven modeling, monitoring, and control for Power Distribution Networks. Dr. Yu currently serves as the associate editor for IEEE Transactions on Smart Grid, IEEE Transactions on Sustainable Energy, and IEEE Power Engineering Letters.
