    Hello Data Science Community Members,

Thank you to everyone who attended our Data Science Community meeting on Tuesday! For those unable to attend, we heard from Jhonny Di Girolamo (Asset Management Consultant at CenterPoint Energy) and Gautam Sonde (Solution Architect at CenterPoint Energy) with their presentation, “Asset Failure Prediction Models.” This in depth discussion featured a CenterPoint asset overview, a look into MUG asset life analytics, failure prediction modeling, dashboards, and much more. You can catch up with full recording and copy of the slide deck here.

During this meeting we experienced on/off audio interference when members joined and left the meeting and I want to take full responsibility. We are still learning Microsoft Teams and I noticed an “in-meeting announcement” option had been turned on by default. I am working with our IT team to get fixed across the organization and plan to have updated prior to our next meeting. If there was a section of the presentation you found specifically challenging to understand, let me know and I’ll be happy to help.

Next Month! (October 20th) – “A Python Experiment: Identification of High Voltage Transmission Line Asset Renewal Initiatives Using Structure-Based Information”

    Description:

Analysts review several factors when determining if line maintenance or rebuilds are required. Many of these factors examine the status of a particular line as a whole, rather than based on variables specific to individual transmission structures (poles).

Based on more robust data collection and powerful new modeling tools, this project attempted to use machine learning and deep learning methods to automate the process of predicting the need for a transmission line rebuild based largely on information at the structure level.

The session will include information on how Mike used information at the structure and line level to train models based on a binary classification problem of determining necessity for a t-line rebuild. The presentation will describe the problem, methods used, results and conclusions, as well as next steps. All analysis was performed using python, so Mike will provide a high-level overview of the methods and techniques used. Please bring your questions, as this session will include Q&A and open discussion.

    Presenter:

Mike White, Local Relations Consultant at American Transmission Company (ATC)

The Voices of Experience | Artificial Intelligence guide is finally live on SmartGrid.gov! UAI worked with NREL on this important guide:

Voices of Experience is an initiative sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Electricity’s Advanced Grid Research group designed to bring utilities together to share their knowledge, insights and lessons learned through implementing the emerging technology that is reshaping the electric power industry.

The information in this guide came directly from UAI Utility members and other utility staff who are working through the challenges of building internal skill sets, investing in a new set of technologies to access and manage more data than ever before, and demonstrating its value to their organizations. Utilities engaged in developing AI capabilities have learned lessons and gained insights along the way that can be applied to other utilities preparing for the data-driven future. The goal of this guide is to provide information that might not be accessible elsewhere-the kind you might get from talking to a colleague at a neighboring utility.
