Hello Data Science Community Members,
I hope all is well! We are just under one week away from our July Data Science Community Conversation and want to get you excited about the session taking place. On Tuesday, July 20 at 1:00 PM CT we’ll be joined by Julie Zhang, Lead Data Scientist at SoCalGas, who will be leading a discussion around, “Natural Language Processing Use Cases at SoCalGas: Named Entity Extraction, Automatic Redaction and Text Classification for General Counsel and Damage Prevention Documents.” As this discussion will be interactive, we encourage you to come prepared with questions and to be ready to share your insights.

Session Description:
In SoCalGas, their mission is to build the cleanest, safest, most innovative energy company in America. The Data Science team in SoCalGas has been utilizing the latest technologies to provide innovative solutions. One of the emerging technologies in Utilities is Natural Language Processing (NLP), which has been applied in other industries to solve a wide range of business problems. In this talk, Julie will share NLP use cases with General Counsel, Damage Prevention on named entity extraction, automatic redaction, and text classification. She will demonstrate how utilities could benefit from NLP techniques and expand NLP applications to more operating areas.
Speaker: Julie Zhang, Lead Data Scientist at SoCalGas
At SoCalGas, Julie utilizes state-of-the-art Data Science tools and machine learning techniques to solve complex business problems across the company. Julie delivered models and insights to upper management and various operating teams, including Customer Services, Customer solutions, Gas Control, Damage Prevention, Financial Planning, Legal, and Human Resources. Prior to joining SoCalGas in March 2019, Julie worked in Caltech and U.C. San Diego as a postdoctoral researcher, where she worked on statistical modeling and data-mining techniques from multidisciplinary projects. She received a PhD in Geophysics from the Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science in University of Miami._______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
