Thanks everyone for the input.  An example of what we are facing:  We have 3 (and possibly more) ways to report MWh. 1. data directly from the plant meters, 2. data from Pi historian – un-corrected, 3. data from Pi historian – corrected.  I’m looking for a way to align the organization on one standard, ex. Pi historian data – corrected = MWh.  while the other points of data may be useful to some, we should call is something else (ex. Plant MWh).  I reached out to EEI, below is their reply:

Hi Nadia – Thanks for reaching out.  If I’m reading your email correctly, I expect you’re after a data taxonomy for governance purposes, but please confirm.  We have discussed the potential for embarking on this effort within our EEI Data Working Group although have not had an opportunity to pursue it.  Our group has been largely focused on data privacy lately although we can discuss the possibility on a future call.  Please let me know if you’d like to be added to or would like additional about that working group. Currently, there are no participants from El Paso Electric.

As a separate thought, EPRI was undertaking an effort to implement an internal data governance framework, although I’m not sure of the recent status.  When I spoke with EPRI nearly two years ago, I suggested their work could be beneficial to a member working group, but I am similarly uncertain if they’ve been able to consider this aspect.

We are also working with DOE to develop suggestions around data access and sharing.  Inherent in this effort would be a process for defining the types of data. However, this effort is in the very preliminary stages, and would primarily be focused on grid / operational data, which would likely be narrower than you maybe be looking for.

I also heard from a vendor that IEEE (Sim model??) is what they use for their solution.

Just wanted to see how my colleagues in UAI address this situation.

    Thanks!

    Hi Travis,

Unfortunately, I am not aware of any industry standard data dictionary. Only reference I found out there are data dictionaries on feeds to federal agencies, e.g., FERC. But the way I use data dictionary might be too specific for industry wide use.

Are you thinking that specific – data field/column names, data type, max length, primary/foreign key, null allowed?  Or are you thinking of what we call business terms which are business words/phrases and their definitions linked to data assets?  The latter provides common language for a utility or even different parts of a business unit.  The former is going to be difficult based on various computer systems by all of the utilities out there.

    Good luck.

I haven’t heard about anything like this but I too would be interested if someone knows about a standard for the industry floating around out there.

    Hello all!

Does anyone know of a standard data dictionary for the electric utility industry?  I thought I had heard that EEI had produced something.

    thanks!
