Strategic Advisory Board (SAB) Discussion UPDATES

    • Creation of Job Descriptions
      • We identified which roles/positions we want to create job descriptions, as well as captured some things to consider for these job descriptions:
        • Focus on the tactical roles
        • Align roles to industry standard
        • Make sure you think well-rounded about the roles, i.e. from a small utility perspective by including bullet points of roles and responsibilities that may role-up into the roles identified for hybrid roles
        • Data scientist is not always a perfect fit
        • Identify progression based on experience
        • IT vs Business
          • Should roles be segmented based on side of the business? OR…
          • Should we go by the functions to take away IT vs Business?
        • Focus roles/positions on functions
          • Engineers
          • Architects
          • Data Scientists
          • Data Stewards (Question from SAB members: Is this a specific job title role within utilities?)
          • Data Analysts/Management
          • Reporting Analysts
        • Examples of roles/positions
          • All the same…
            • Solutions Engineer (getting a ML application into production, containerization, intersects with architect)
            • Data Engineer
            • Analytics Engineer
            • DevOps Engineer
            • MLOps Engineer
            • Business Intelligence Analyst
          • AI Specialist overlaps with Data Scientist and ML Engineer
          • Back End IT: Data Base Engineer
          • Front End: Business Intelligence Analyst/Developing Reporting Solutions
      • We identified a small group of SAB and EAC members to work on the job descriptions for each role/position – Leslie to be in touch within the next two weeks to pull us together
        • @Dawn, OUC, OUC
        • @Jordan, Entergy
        • @Nadia, El Paso Electric
        • @Beth, The Energy Authority
        • @Kelly, City Utilities of Springfield, MO
        • @Joseph, Duke Energy
        • @Vijoy, Consumers Energy
        • @John, American Electric Power
        • @Neelanjan, Tennessee Valley Authority
      • Small group to work on:
        • Frame the role and responsibilities, key components
        • Experience vs degree, i.e. requirements
        • What to watch out for, lessons learned
        • Industry representation of salary
        • Full circle conversation with cloud migration/adoption and IT vs Business: evolve job descriptions to include moving into the cloud and should also include collaboration between IT and the business

     EAC DISCUSSION

    • We spent time reviewing the things discussed/identified during the May 10, 2022 EAC meeting at UA Summit. These notes are attached to this post. We also made a few additional notes to the topics of discussions, as noted below
    • The EAC members at our meeting during UA Summit worked collaboratively and provided a wealth of information to the topics at hand:
      • Analytics in IT vs. Analytics in the Business
        • Make sure to add “Industrial Systems Engineer”
        • Best Practice Get data scientists in the field
      • Hiring and Retention
      • Cloud Migration/Adoption
        • Can capitalize implementation, but not consumption in the cloud – Lots of members agree and are doing the same
        • Work with regulators on filing costs
        • We all collectively could do a better job of Data Governance in Cloud Migration/Adoption
      • Data Governance/Data Quality
        • EV chargers/vendors – they are offering no standardization of data – they are all over the place
        • Push to get standardize data from vendors
        • Impost requirements on vendors to play with you
        • Who can see the data is a bigger issue than who owns the data, i.e. making it usable. Owners don’t share.
      • The Intersection of Digital Experience and Data Analytics
        • Experience = Why to align with priorities
        • Data = How
      • ESG (Environment Societal Governance)
    • There has been a lot to consume and combine regarding the amazing discussions that took place during this meeting, so we want to make sure to take time during today’s meeting to do a review of this information, especially for those that missed the meeting at UA Summit
    • The team here at UAI is still reviewing and compiling actions to take regarding this information, so we think it is important to give an overview of the EAC’s findings and collect any additional thoughts on these topics. Due to this focus, we will not discuss any new topics during this June EAC meeting.

    Thanks!

         Leslie
