    Hello Grid Analytics Community Members,

I hope all is well! With September just kicking off, I wanted to reach out and get you excited for our September (2021) Grid Analytics Community Conversation. On Wednesday, September 15th at 1:00 PM CT, we will be joined by Dr. Steven Quiring, Professor of Atmospheric Sciences Program, Department of Geography (Ohio State University) who will be leading a special out of industry presentation around Storm Outage Modeling: Applying Analytics to Inform Electrical Utilities. This presentation will include Q&A and open discussion and we encourage you to come prepared ready to ask questions and share your insight. I’ll be providing more information on this session one week prior to our meeting but you can always learn more about each of our upcoming Community Conversations on our Events Page HERE.

Our latest IT update allows me to send meeting placeholders directly to your calendars through my alternate email address kpraet@sg.utilityanalytics.com. I sent out invitations for this community, and each of our other communities, earlier this week. If you did not receive a calendar invitation let me know so I can help troubleshoot. As this seems to be an issue with some of our member’s firewalls, we recommend whitelisting my new email address kpraet@sg.utilityanalytics.com to ensure any invites don’t go to your spam/junk folders.

Again please let me know if you have any questions/concerns or do not have a calendar placeholder on your calendar.

Thanks and I look forward to connecting with you all this month!

    Hello Grid Analytics Community Members,

I hope all is well! We are one week away from our September Grid Analytics Community Conversation and want to get you excited about the session taking place. On Wednesday, September 15th at 1:00 PM CT, we’ll be joined by Dr. Steven Quiring, Professor of Atmospheric Sciences Program, Department of Geography (Ohio State University) who will be leading a special out of industry presentation around Storm Outage Modeling: Applying Analytics to Inform Electrical Utilities. As this discussion will be interactive, we encourage you to some prepared with questions and your insight.

Learn more about this session and our speaker below!

    Session Description:

Storms can cause significant damage to the electrical power system, leading to prolonged power interruptions to a large number of customers. The number of weather-related outages has increased significantly in recent years. This presentation summarizes the data-driven power outage models that we have developed for investor-owned electrical utilities in the United States. These models are used to support pre-storm preparation and longer-term planning. The development and validation of our models will be presented and our approach for quantifying uncertainty will also be discussed.

Speaker: Dr. Steven Quiring – Professor of Atmospheric Sciences Program, Department of Geography (Ohio State University)

Dr. Steven M. Quiring is a Professor in the Atmospheric Sciences Program, Department of Geography at The Ohio StateUniversity. He is also a Fellowat The Risk Instituteat The Ohio State University Fisher College of Businessand a member of the Translational Data Analytics Instituteand the Sustainability Institute at Ohio State University. Prior to his arrival at Ohio State in 2016, Dr. Quiring spent 11 years at Texas A&M University. His research focuses on hydroclimatology, weather data analyticsand modeling the impact of stormson electrical infrastructure. Dr. Quiring has published more than 100 journal articles and has received more than $15M in funding from federal (DOE, NSF, NOAA) and state (TWDB and TXDEM) agencies, including an NSF CAREER award in 2010.
