Hello Grid Analytics Community Members,
I hope all is well! We are one week away from our August (2022) Grid Analytics Community Conversation and want to get you excited about the session taking place. On Wednesday, August 17th at 1:00 PM CT, we’ll be joined by the following speakers who will be leading a discussion around, “Using Analytics to Improve Distribution System Operations and Resilience:”
–@PJ– Manager, Technology & Renewable Programs (ElectriCities of North Carolina)
– Matt Makdad – Engineering Supervisor (New River Light & Power)
– Ning Lu – Professor (NC State University)
– Hanpyo Lee – Ph.D. Candidate at NC State University and Senior Manager (KEPCO)
Learn more about this session and our speakers below!
Session Description:
ElectriCities of NC is a not-for-profit membership organization of municipally owned electric utilities that are spread across NC, SC, and VA. ElectriCities partnered with researchers from NC State University and New River Light & Power (NRLP), a member utility located in Boone, NC, to create a suite of analytical tools aimed to improve distribution system operations and resiliency. Some of these include transformer overloading and underloading analyses, transformer replacement ROI calculator, and identification of mislabeled transformers, meters, and phases. Attendees will learn about the data required for these analyses, how the algorithms were developed, and the financial and efficiency benefits NRLP realized from this project.
Speaker: PJ Rehm, Manager, Technology & Renewable Programs (ElectriCities of North Carolina)
PJ Rehm is the Manager of Technology & Renewable Programs at ElectriCities of NC. He graduated from NC State University in 2011 with a BS in Mechanical Engineering. Shortly after graduating he joined ElectriCities of NC, where he has worked for the last 10 years. He spends most of his time working with exciting and new technologies in the utility industry including smart meter deployments, distributed energy resources, and data analytics.
Speaker: Matt Makdad, Engineering Supervisor (New River Light & Power)
Matt Makdad P.E. has been the Engineering Supervisor at New River Light & Power in Boone since 2017. He oversees planning and operations which include the line workers, metering shop, and mapping functions. He has a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from The University of Pennsylvania and earned his NC Professional Engineering license in 2003. He has been integral in reviewing the project analysis and performing data field validation.
Speaker: Ning Lu, Professor (NC State University)
Dr. Lu is a Professor in the ECE Department of North Carolina State University. Dr. Lu is an IEEE Fellow and has over 25 years of experience in electric power engineering. She received her Ph.D. degree from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 2002. From 2003 to 2012, Dr. Ning Lu was a senior research engineer with Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. Dr. Lu’s research interests include load modeling and control, energy management systems, renewable integration, microgrid modeling and control, real-time and faster-than-real-time large-scale co-simulation systems, and meter data analysis. She has authored more than 150 publications.
Speaker: Hanpyo Lee, Ph.D. Candidate at NC State University and Senior Manager (KEPCO)
Hanpyo Lee is a Ph.D. candidate in electrical and computer engineering at NC State University. His research focuses on integrating machine learning with data analytics that can be applied to power system unsolved problems using the new types of large-scale data available recently. This research area combines the reliability and interpretability of physics-based approaches with the benefits of machine learning, such as higher accuracy or computational speed.
