November Natural Gas Analytics Meeting Follow Up + What’s Next
Hello Natural Gas Analytics Community Members,
Thank you to everyone who attended our November Natural Gas Analytics Community Conversation (part of UA Week) last week! For those unable to attend, we had a special 90 minute discussion around “Burning Questions: All The Questions You Thought You Needed To Ask + More!” This meeting included the “burning questions” asked directly by the Natural Gas Analytics Community and were addresses in a Q&A style format by a series of utility presenters. Some of those questions included:
- What are your practices regarding natural gas analytics storage and how do you optimize pipeline/storage assets?
- How do you handle Asset integrity-based analytics outside of risk modeling?
- How are you using natural language processing to analyze written text comments to get value from them?
- How are you identifying gas leaks using data, and even better, how are you predicting gas leaks using data?
- How do you make the shift from descriptive operational metrics to more predictive & prescriptive analytics?
- What are your recommendations to help grow the maturity of leadership’s view of analytics?
- When does is make sense to insource analytics vs outsource analytics?
- What is the proper place of advanced data analytics in the mix of asset management tools?
Special thanks to the following presenters for their involvement:
Facilitator: David Baron, Director of Performance Management & Organizational Strategy – SoCalGas
Presenters/Panelists:
- Zac Lowe, Director, Pipeline Safety Management – Southern Company Gas
- Catherine McCowan, Integrity and Asset Management Governance – Enbridge
- Brad Roulo, Manager, Asset Protection – Nicor Gas
- Julie Zhang, Lead Data Scientist – SoCalGas

Next month we WILL NOT be meeting due to the holidays but will instead be regrouping Wednesday, January 20th at 11:00 AM CT for a discussion on “Gas Leakage Prediction” and will have more info on this session soon.
If you have any questions please let us know otherwise we hope you all have a great holidays season and look forward to regrouping in 2021!
Thanks,
