Hello Natural Gas Analytics Community Members,

I hope all is well! We have a very exciting Community Conversation planned for this month and hope you all can join us. On Wednesday, April 21 at 11:00 AM CST, we’ll be joined by Community Sponsor Erin Boyd, Global Director of Commercial and CX AI/ML at AES, and Andres Figuerola, Data Scientist at AES, who will be leading a presentation on Predicting Gas Burn for AES Power Legacy Out-of-Merit Gas Generators.

    Session Description:

In this discussion, Andres Figuerola and Erin Boyd will present on analytics deployed to support the operations of legacy natural gas assets in the California Wholesale market. Specifically, generators in the California market are dispatched according to a least-cost solution in which participants submit bids to provide a given quantity of energy at a specified price. While an oversimplification, awards to generate are based on an economic ordering of cost and dispatched from lowest cost to higher costs until all demand is satisfied. However, the market operator can also dispatch units based on non-economic reasons, including reliability, with AES’s legacy assets falling into this category. These assets would otherwise not win an award based on cost for most hours within the year. The non-economic dispatch of these assets makes the procurement of gas to generate more difficult and uncertain as reliability can be difficult to predict based on fundamentals. Algorithms to thus predict whether these units would be called on for the following day were developed along with a prediction of the gas burn if called on. This presentation will provide an overview of this work, including supporting inputs, challenges, and next steps.

Erin Boyd – Global Director of Commercial and CX AI/ML at AES:

Erin Boyd is a PhD economist passionate about energy and data and devoted to data-driven insights and state-of-art advanced analytics. Half quant, half strategist, Erin has worked in over 30 countries throughout the world on a diverse range of projects: masterplans for electrification in Africa and Asia; policies and incentives to attract investment in renewables in developed, emerging and developing countries; demand response and innovative pricing in Europe and the United States; and energy sector development plans the world over; to name but a few. Currently serving as Global Director of Commercial and CX AI/ML for AES, prior roles included leading research and analytics for both the customer programs and day-ahead/real-time trading floor at PG&E, SVP of Economics and Market Strategy for a San Franciscan energy start-up and Managing Economist for Economic Consulting Associates.

Andres Figuerola – Data Scientist at AES:

Andres Figuerola is a PhD mathematician, currently working as a Data Scientist in commercial projects at AES. With a background in Algebraic Geometry, he is currently interested in optimization, time series forecasting, and exploring the use of high-level abstract mathematics in real world problems. Andres has participated in projects related to hydrological energy dispatch, gas market predictors, renewable energy pricing and demand. He is also passionate about creating data science pipelines and exploring cloud architectures. In his spare time, he enjoys playing music and thinking about Algebra/Topology.
