Hello Natural Gas Analytics Community Members,
I hope all is well! We are one week away from our in-person October (2022) Natural Gas Analytics Community Conversation (co located at UA Week) and want to get you excited about the session taking place. On Tuesday, October 18 at 2:15 PT, we will feature a two part session hitting on the following areas:
Part 1: Interactive “Solve My Problem” session led by Kaleb Thompson, Data Science Supervisor at ONE Gas.
- Come prepared to discuss the following “problems” during this session:
- Problem #1: Use of internal utility data vs external utility data – what will the future of customer data look like? If you could have access to any external data, what kind of use cases would it enable
- Problem #2: What is your strategy for facilitating idea generation and innovation within your utility? Starting at the analysts level, do analysts feel heard (some of the best ideas in the company are generated by analysts)?
Part 2: “Analytics Ethics, things like measuring performance of employees through AI and tracking information on customers for profiling” – Tabletop Exercise: Debate (Facilitated by UAI Staff)

Session Description:
Part 1: The interactive “Solve My Problem” workshop will be facilitated by Kaleb Thompson, Data Science Supervisor at OneGas. This session will be use to brainstorm solutions on strategic problemsand has been designed with input directly from members of the Community.
The “Solve My Problem” session will be delivered in a way that will encourage partnered collaboration between members to come up with solutions and/or action plans to help members solve real-time “problems”. During conversations about the “problems”, we encourage members to showcase their successes, share experiences and lessons learned. We encourage open, interactive dialogue throughout the exercise to create a vibrant and collaborative environment, and to ensure everyone in attendance receives an opportunity to voice their opinions and ideas. The ultimate goal is that you gain valuable insights from the supportive and knowledgeable group of peers meeting during this Community Conversation.
Come prepared to discuss the following “problems” during this session:
– Problem #1: Use of internal utility data vs external utility data – what will the future of customer data look like? If you could have access to any external data, what kind of use cases would it enable
– Problem #2: What is your strategy for facilitating idea generation and innovation within your utility? Starting at the analysts level, do analysts feel heard (some of the best ideas in the company are generated by analysts)?
Part 2: Attendees will be split into two groups where they will work together to draft up an argument, for vs. against, to defend an important analytics topic or situation. Each group will have 20 minutes to work collaboratively to draft their argument and select a presenter(s) from within their group, and then each group will have 10 minutes to share their views (a fast paced 40 minutes).
Be prepared to exercise your innovative thinking and come with an open mind, as you may be purposefully put on the “for” team when you are actually “against” it and vice versa to help you think constructively to promote further development and advancement. Ultimately, we want to help you meet more people during this timeframe, take part in an interesting, informative, and collabortive activity, and most importantly to have some fun. The debate topic for the Natural Gas Analytics Community is Analytics Ethics, things like measuring performance of employees through AI and tracking information on customers for profiling (scraping social media accounts, taps into phones, etc.).
