    Hello Safety Analytics Community Members,

Thanks for attending the January 24, 2023 Safety Analytics Community Conversation! For those unable to attend, we missed you and look forward to seeing you online in February. During this Community Conversation, we were joined by Bob Keller, Senior Safety and HP Lead at Nebraska Public Power District who led a discussion around, Learning What Not To Do with Safety Analytics.

Please find the recording and presentation deck for this Community Conversation in the library. If you haven’t taken our post-meeting evaluation, please take a minute and complete it at the following link: https://www.menti.com/al96j3385e5w

**As a reminder, we have launched a NEW Safety Analytics Benchmarking Project. Read more details about it below and see more info attached. We are excited to get all utility safety professionals involved…not just utility analytics safety professionals…ALL safety professionals! If you are not the right person within your utility to get involved, please forward this to the correct person. You can have them reach out to @Leslie, at lcook@utilityanalytics.com if they are not currently involved in UAI… we will work to get them set-up and answer any questions.

    • Benchmarking project is being led by the Safety Analytics Community Leadership Team (UAI Utility Members)
    • What is the problem we are trying to solve?
    • Recordable incident rate (RIR) is easy to track, but it has flaws. We are looking for a better alternative to help track Serious Injuries and Fatalities (SIF) and/or PSIF (Potential Serious Injuries and Fatalities). We want to find a better way to measure safety performance that is a better indicator of  SIF and PSIF.
    • We think the alternative is the EEI SCL definition, but we want to explore options with the members of the Safety Analytics Community.
    • We want to have uniformity across our utilities, so we are measuring the same things in the same ways, and we want to do this through a dialogue with the UAI Safety Analytics Community members.
  • Take the poll by January 31, 2023!
    • Before taking the poll, review it with your team via the PDF document attached. This will help you understand what you need to collect for the poll before taking it.
    • Direct link to poll: https://www.menti.com/alrvcrrb93ha, or
    • Go to http://www.Menti.com and use code 2845 4909
    • We will review results of the poll during our February and March 2023 Safety Analytics Community Conversations
  • To help you complete the poll, collect the following data before starting the poll. All of the below info is available on the OSHA 300A log.
    • Number of Recordable Injuries
    • Number of DART Injuries
    • Total Work Hours
    • Total Number of DART Days
    • The OSHA 300A log must be filed yearly for the previous year by February 1.  An OSHA 300A is normally done for a specific location.  Enterprises with multiple locations will have multiple 300A forms.  Many enterprises combine all of their location data into a single 300A.  This document will cover the entire enterprise and will contain all of the necessary data.
  • Next steps after this poll:
    • Review the results during the February and March Safety Analytics Community Conversations.
    • Identify the top 3-5 safety metrics used, in addition to RIR, and capture members’ results for 2022 to benchmark.
    • Work together to identify a better alternative than RIR to track Serious Injuries and Fatalities (SIF) and/or Potential Serious Injuries and Fatalities (PSIF).
    • Once a better alternative metric to RIR is identified, capture members’ results annually to benchmark (annually on February 1).

Keep reading for a few quick announcements!

      Hello Safety Analytics Community Members!

Thank you to everyone that has taken the time to participate in the Safety Analytics Benchmarking survey! So far, we have 8 members that have taken the survey. We would love to see at least 30 members take it.

We are looking to build a benchmark group for Safety Metrics within UAI. We are interested in looking at the traditional metrics, but also at Serious Injuries and Fatalities (SIF). First we’d like to discuss the SIF definition (Edison has one that is broadly used) and then begin benchmarking to gauge performance.  Please check in with our survey!

If you are not in safety within your utility, please forward the benchmarking survey to your safety group for consideration. This is an excellent first step to getting your utility involved in this Benchmarking project.

Also, make sure you join us for the February 28, 2023 UAI Safety Analytics Community Conversation, where @Bert from CPS Energy will facilitate a discussion on SIF as follows and review results from the Benchmarking survey.

February 28, 2023 UAI Safety Analytics Community Conversation
Session Title: Part 1: Serious Injuries and Fatalities (SIF) Benchmarking and Community Discussion (Part 2 will be on PSIF)
Session Description: CPS Energy has been exploring safety metrics that help to create a better picture of safety performance in an effort to better inform leaders in where time spent making improvements will be most valuable. There are many ways to look at injury severity; DART, OSHA Severity Rate among others. Serious Injuries and Fatalities (SIF) is an emerging trend with some varying definitions. We’ve done a survey to get information from utilities regarding what metrics they’re using and we’ll share the results and then have a short discussion about interest in longer term benchmarking safety metrics with this group.

If you have any questions about the benchmarking project, please reach out to me, @Leslie, at lcook@utilityanalytics.com or simply reply to this discussion thread in UAI Connect.

      Thanks!

           Leslie
