NEW REPORT: 2021 Utility Report
Posted by Erin Hardick on November 16, 2021 at 12:16 pmHello members,
We added a new report to the Research + Resources page: 2021 Utility Report.
This report is based on the State of the Industry survey that is taken by all utility professionals that attend the Smart Utility Summit. The Smart Utility Summit is a hands-on experience in which utility representatives interact with industry leading vendors, analysts, and federal agencies to discuss updating and improving North American utility infrastructure.
The State of the Industry survey asks about smart grid strategy, challenges, technology deployments and spending priorities. The survey responses are aggregated and displayed in the 2021 Utility Report. This year’s report includes answers from 60 utilities across the U.S. Key findings of the report include:
- Outage management systems are considered the most important for the utilities’ future success
- Over the past 12 months, the majority of outages were weather-related
- Price is the largest concern customers have and utilities are prioritizing cost savings in their messaging to customers.
- 71% of utilities are very concerned with cybersecurity and consider increase security the top benefit of implementing new technologies
- Utilities plan to spend the most on metering (AMI & AMR) in the next 12 months
While these key findings highlight the major themes of the survey responses, they do not provide an in-depth look at the state of the utility industry. To get an in-depth look, download the 2021 Utility Report, which reveals the aggregate summary data of all 25 questions of the State of the Industry survey
Click here to view the report!
You can also locate the 2021 Utility Report, along with all of our other research, by clicking on the “Research + Resources” tab.
If want to learn more about the Smart Utility Summit, reach out to Gina, gweber@utilityanalytics.com.Happy reading!

Subject: If You Could Ask a Panel of Natural Gas Analytics Experts Anything, What Would You Ask? – Input Requested for Upcoming “Ask Me Anything” SessionGood Morning UAI Utility Members,
I hope everyone had a great weekend! Today I wanted to make you aware of an exciting “Ask Me Anything” themed session, taking place Tuesday, December 7th at 12:00 PM CT as part of our Natural Gas Analytics Community, and invite you, our utility members, to be part of the discussion. Given the popularity of the “Ask Me Anything” format in some of our previous Community Conversations, we’re very excited to create a session entirely around Natural Gas Analytics.
Are you a Natural Gas Utility? If you could ask a panel of natural gas analytics experts anything, what would you ask? We want to hear your voice!
To ensure we deliver the best session in December, we want to turn to you and get your direct input on any questions you would like to explore. Please respond privately to this discussion thread with any input, or email Leslie Cook (lcook@utilityanalytics.com) who is working to compile our list of questions. There is no limit to the number of questions you can ask, please let us know what you would like to discuss!
*This session is open to all UAI Utility Members. If you are not part of the Natural Gas Analytics Community already and would like to be included in this session, please respond below or email me at kpraet@utilityanalytics.com so I can be sure you’re forwarded our meeting placeholder.
For those of you that are newer to the “Ask Me Anything” format, we’ve provided some more info below:
Ask Me Anything (aka AMA) is an interview format that originated on the website Reddit. The idea is that everyone — from daredevils who’ve climbed Mt. Everest to regular folks who work at Walmart (and in our case it is our Natural Gas Analytics Community leadership team acting as our panel of experts) — has interesting insights and information to share. This format thrives on audience participation. The Ask Me Anything forum is an interesting new concept we would like to introduce through Community Conversation sessions from time-to-time. Our audience (you) will determine topics and how the conversation will go based on their questions.
Again, please submit your questions privately below or send directly to Leslie Cook at (lcook@utilityanalytics.com). If you would like to be included on this session but aren’t a member of the Natural Gas Analytics Community, let me know so I can be sure you’re forwarded our meeting placeholder.
Thanks and we look forward to hearing from and including you in this exciting session!

Thanks for submitting a question, @David, for our Natural Gas Analytics Ask Me Anything session! Two other questions have been submitted, as follows. I look forward to hearing from others with their questions for this session.
- How do you prioritize work on assets – with limited capital and O&M what factors do you consider?
- How is everyone looking at appliance disaggregation and what progress has been made on the natural gas side to understand what appliances customers have?
Submit your questions by replying directly to this post or you can submit them to me directly at lcook@utilityanalytics.com.
Thanks!

I would be interested to know where companies are at in terms of the return to work – is everyone back in the office? Blended working from home/office? What do you see as the future – everything back to normal or some hybrid will continue? What are the strategies you have adopted to continue to work virtually as teams – either because you are in different cities or because some people are still working from home?

- How do you prioritize work on assets – with limited capital and O&M what factors do you consider?
- How is everyone looking at appliance disaggregation and what progress has been made on the natural gas side to understand what appliances customers have?
