Subject: Data Analyst Candidates – Interview Questions & Interpreting Good Answers

    Great question, Michael!

I think it depends a bit on what you’re hoping to accomplish.  Will this person be focused solely on analytics, or will this person also be responsible for tooling and environments?  How do you define “analytics”?  For instance, are you looking primarily at descriptive analytics (reports, business intelligence, etc.), predictive analytics (trending, statistics, forecasting, etc.), prescriptive analytics (recommendation engines, neural networks, etc.), or all the above?  What are the business use cases driving the hire?

How you answer these questions will help determine the kind of person you’re looking for, and therefore the questions that should be asked.  If you’re looking to stand up a cloud-based analytics environment where you have none today, then you probably want someone who knows analytics, but also has experience building in various cloud platforms (Azure, AWS, etc.).  If you already have a great reporting system in place but you want to bring it to the “next level” of predictive and prescriptive analytics, then you’re probably looking for someone with a strong background in core data science analytics tooling who also has some formal mathematics education.  If you’re looking for someone who can be the first analyst who then builds up an entire department, then you’re looking for someone with general data science knowledge who also has an entrepreneur background with previous management experience.

Once you’ve narrowed it down (and it’s possible you’ve already done everything above), you might consider reaching out to a sister utility with an established group and see if they could “loan” you someone that could participate in the interview process – both writing questions and interviewing candidates.  It might be the safest way of ensuring the candidate aligns with your positional goals while also ensuring a cultural fit.

Hope that helps.  If you have answers to some of the questions above, I suspect many of us would love to contribute some interview questions.  Good luck on the hunt!

    Hello Data Science Members,

A great question came up during our Enterprise Analytics Community Conversation earlier that I wanted to pose to this group as well. We’ve also posted in our Ask Your Network Community but wanted to include below as well. Do any of you have suggestions for Michael (Georgia Transmission)? Might you be willing to share anything or connect with Michael? Take a look below:

“GTC is trying to hire our first data analyst but without analytics expertise inhouse, we need help preparing interview questions and interpreting good answers from the candidates on their technical knowledge. Do any members have advice or suggestions on preparing the right interview questions and interpreting good answers? Also, do you know of a resource of any one or any organization who may be able to help us?”

Thanks in advance for your help and I look forward to your replys!

    Good Afternoon UAI Utility Members,

Happy Friday! I hope everyone’s had a great start to their 2022s and are getting ready for an exciting month of UAI Community Conversations. Of the sessions taking place this month, we wanted to make you aware of our Data Science Community Conversation (taking place Tuesday, January 18th at 1:00 PM CT) which will be one of the more different (but exciting!) formats we’ve explored to date. The topic is also something we’ve been hearing several members ask about.

During this session we’ll be joined by Sabine Devins (Digital Story Teller, Content Maker, & Speaker) out of Berlin, Germany who will be leading an interactive discussion around, Storytelling with Data.” During this session, Sabine will take us through the fundamentals of finding a story, crafting a story and presenting a story with examples from her work as the Managing Editor of the award-winning INFO.GRAPHICS digital magazine. As a group, we’ll look at the stories and how we applied certain principles and how and why to apply storytelling to our work.

Given the topic and interactive format, we want to open this session to all UAI Utility Members. If this session sounds interesting to you and you are not part of the Data Science Community, please send me a message at kpraet@utilityanalytics.com so I can forward you over the invite.

I’ve gotten a sneak peak of Sabine’s presentation and couldn’t be more excited for Tuesday! Please consider joining us for this great session and feel free to pass along this note to other members internally who may benefit.

Thanks and I look forward to connecting next week!

On Wednesday, February 23rd at 2:00 PM CT, we will be joined by Pavel Ozhogin, Director, Data Science & Solution Development, and Srikant Vadali, Data Science Manager, at National Grid who will be leading a discussion around, “The Impact of Climate Change to Electric Transmission Assets”. As this discussion will be interactive, we encourage you to come prepared with questions and your insight.

Learn more about this session and our speakers below!

    Session Description:

MIT did a study for National Grid where they simulated weather for the years 2025 – 2041 over a broad area that encompasses our service territory in New England and New York. The simulation took one year to complete and provides hourly weather data at a resolution of 3 km. The dataset is 63 terabytes in size and resides in our corporate Azure environment. The data science team at National Grid performed an extreme event analysis of wind speed and icing data to identify electric circuits that are likely to be impacted in the future. Our analysis provides insight on which circuits/assets National Grid should focus on to ensure that our transmission network is resilient to climate change.

Speaker: Pavel Ozhogin, Director, Data Science & Solution Development (National Grid)

Dr. Ozhogin has a passion for discovering actionable data insights that lead to measurable business impact. As the Director of Data Science, he leads and coaches his team of data scientists and energy forecasters to continuously identify and deliver on opportunities to help National Grid improve and maximize the value of using data science as a capability. Pavel enjoys working in the utility industry, which offers wide variety of data sets, vast use-cases in applying analytics, and most importantly – tangible societal impact.

Speaker: Srikant Vadali, Data Science Manager (National Grid)

Srikant Vadali is a Data Science Manager at National Grid and was a Lead Data Scientist before he transitioned to the present role. He leads and manages the data engineering and machine learning operations for Data Science projects at National Grid. He has over 9 years of experience in the area of Data Science.

    Hello Grid Analytics Community Members,

I hope all is well! We are just under one week away from our February (2022) Grid Analytics Community Conversation and want to get you excited about the session taking place. On Wednesday, February 16th at 1:00 PM CT, we’ll be joined by Hagen Haentsch, Director of Grid Operations at Oncor, who will be leading a discussion around, “Grid Echo.”  As this discussion will be interactive, we urge you to come prepared with questions and your insight.

Learn more about this session below!

    Session Description:

To gain valuable insights in its operations, equipment performance, and customer behavior any Distribution utility will benefit from combining and synchronizing these disparate data sets. However, to avoid redundancy and silo-ed multiplication of efforts by focusing on specific use cases only, Oncor invested in an effort to produce a clean, synchronized, and comprehensive data scheme containing all relevant operational time series data sets to enable and accelerate higher order analytics use case development in operations, asset management and customer operations. Oncor’s combined and curated data set entailing all critical Distribution time series data was called ‘Grid Echo’TM.

    This session discusses:
    – How Oncor utilizes connectivity models to tell the story of an outage in geospatial visualization environment as well as on schematic visualization
    – How Oncor increases the visibility to distribution connectivity model data and various equipment parameters on a Geospatial visualization
    – How Oncor creates a self-service visualization platform that would allow management to review the state of the system, company’s response to an outage event and identify any missed opportunities
    – Operational usage of “Grid Echo”
