    Hello Data Science Community Members,

I hope all is well! We are one week away from our February (2022) Data Science Community Conversation and want to get you excited about the session taking place. On Tuesday, February 15th at 1:00 PM CT, we’ll be joined by Dominic Ciarlette, Senior Project Engineer – Data Solutions at EN Engineering, who will be leading a discussion around, Sifting Data for Suspicious Records with Machine Learning.” As this discussion will be interactive, we encourage you to come prepared with questions and your insight.

Learn more about this session and our speaker below!

    Session Description:

When managing utility assets, public safety and federal regulations demand the most accurate data possible. Using machine learning, EN Engineering has developed a model that identifies individual records likely to contain erroneous data. This improves efficiency in correcting datasets and reveals trends that can then be analyzed to strengthen the accuracy of all records.

    Session Takeaways:
    – Identify data within a set most likely to be erroneous
    – Improve accuracy of large datasets through machine learning
    – Reveal and analyze trends in large datasets using data models

Speaker: Dominick Ciarlette, Senior Project Engineer – Data Solutions (EN Engineering)

Mr. Dominic Ciarlette is Senior Project Engineer and engineering consultant at EN Engineering with expertise in data analysis and modeling activities to support system design and operation.

Hello Asset Health Analytics Community Members,

I hope all is well! We are one week away from our January (2022) Asset Health Analytics Community Conversation and want to get you excited about the session taking place. On Wednesday, January 26th at 2:00 PM CT, we’ll be joined by Mike White, Local Relations Representative & Data Scientist, and Justin Nettesheim, Sr. Asset Manager, at American Transmission Company who will be leading a discussion around “A Python Experiment: Identification of High Voltage Transmission Line Asset Renewal Initiatives Using Structure-Based Information.” As this discussion will be interactive, we encourage you to come prepared with questions and your insight.

Learn more about this session and our speakers below!

    Session Description:

Analysts review several factors when determining if line maintenance or rebuilds are required. Many of these factors examine the status of a particular line as a whole, rather than based on variables specific to individual transmission structures (poles).

Based on more robust data collection and powerful new modeling tools, this project attempted to use machine learning and deep learning methods to automate the process of predicting the need for a transmission line rebuild based largely on information at the structure level.

The session will include information on how Mike used information at the structure and line level to train models based on a binary classification problem of determining necessity for a t-line rebuild. The presentation will describe the problem, methods used, results and conclusions, as well as next steps. All analysis was performed using python, so Mike will provide a high-level overview of the methods and techniques (not to include a deep dive into the code, scripting or python). Please bring your questions, as this session will include Q&A and open discussion.

Speaker: Mike White, Local Relations Representative & Data Scientist (American Transmission Company)

Mike White joined ATC full time in 2017 where he serves a variety of communication and public relations roles. Mike also serves as a core team member of ATC’s data analytics, AI & machine learning initiative.

In 2002 Mike co-founded The Shop Consulting and served as President of one of Wisconsin’s premier public affairs and strategic communication firms. Prior to forming The Shop he graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and worked in both policy and technology positions for the Wisconsin Legislature. He earned a master’s degree in Data Science from the University of Wisconsin Data Science Program.

Speaker: Justin Nettesheim, Sr. Asset Manager (American Transmission Company)

Justin Nettesheim is a Transmission Line Asset Manager at ATC and has been with ATC since 2012 in different roles.  He is a Professional Engineer licensed in the state of Wisconsin and has a master’s in civil engineering with emphasis in Construction Engineering Management from UW-Madison.

    Hello Data Science Community Members,

I hope all is well! We are one week away from our January (2022) Data Science Community Conversation and want to get you excited about the session taking place. Session Description:

Behind every bit of data lies a story – but how do you tell it in a way that doesn’t just sound like you’re talking about a roller coaster? Or listing off a lot of numbers? Or – more importantly – how do you tell a story with data that people can relate to or use to make better decisions? Journalist and editor Sabine Devins will take you through the fundamentals of finding a story, crafting a story and presenting a story with examples from her work as the Managing Editor of the award-winning INFO.GRAPHICS digital magazine. We’ll look at the stories and how we applied certain principles and how and why to apply storytelling to your work.

Subject: AMI/AMR Implementation – Advice Requested

    Hi Kevin,

Here is Evergy’s answers to these.

    1. Do you leverage AMR or AMI to collect data? If yes is it hourly or another granularity? A: Evergy uses AMI data for 99% of our meters. The majority of them are at the 15 min granularity level.
    2. Has your utility analyzed the data to gain efficiencies?  A: Evergy does use AMI data for Operations and Customer.
    3. If so have you built these capabilities in-house or purchased existing applications and tools to leverage for analysis? A: Evergy uses both. Customer Insights is purchased as well as some Operations Analytics.
    4. Has your utility used data collected through AMI to improve system planning? If so, how specifically is it used for system planning? A: We are still building this out. Currently, we have load forecasting and load analysis in production using AMI Data Aggrergrated at the hour level.
    5. What is the most valuable program/initiative that was made possible with data collected through AMI? (Any details you can share would be helpful) A: Using AMI Data for operations and billing.
    6. Did your utility pursue any new ideas to leverage AMI data that ultimately failed or that weren’t worth pursuing upon further investigation?  A: not yet..
    7. Does your utility leverage the advanced functionality of meters to identify and address meters with deteriorating health in a manner that has created efficiencies? If not in this way specifically, have you improved meter testing and treatment of retirements through AMI?  A: Yes – we leverage meter events as well as the absence of reads from AMI meters to find AMI Meters that are failing.

    Thanks

    Hello UAI Members,

I hope everyone had a great weekend! Last week I connected with one of our members from Enbridge Gas Inc. who is currently on the path to automated meter reading (AMR/AMI). In preperation, Enbridge was hoping to learn more from others on the following:

    • How did you implement AMI/AMR – (purchased software, worked with a consultant or figured it out in house, etc.)
    • Sharing experiences relating to the following
    • Using AMR/AMI and related data to improve system planning – peak analysis etc.
    • Sharing of hourly data with customers – what aspect was of most value in this front and also an understanding of the levels of difficulty with this
    • Improvements to meter testing/sampling – as new meters can report back if their health is deteriorating
    • Other values derived through AMR/AMI implementation

Given the popularity of this topic, I’m hoping our members will be willing to share thier experiences to assist Enbridge. Please provide any insight below and let us know if you have any questions.
