I hope all is well! We are just under one week away from our August Grid Analytics Community Conversation and want to get you excited about the session taking place. On Wednesday, August 18 at 1:00 PM CT we’ll be joined by Daniel Burgess, Sr. Analyst, and Mike Diedesch, PE, Manager Grid Innovation Lab at Avista who will be leading a presentation around, Avista Energy Innovation Lab. As this discussion will be interactive, we encourage you to come prepared with questions and to be ready to share your insight.
Learn more about this session and our speakers below!
Session Description:
The Avista Energy Innovation Lab was built within a Net Zero Campus located at the University District in Spokane, WA. The lab contains sophisticated equipment to allow for simulation and testing of distribution systems. For instance, how would a feeder respond to the addition of batteries and solar. Locating the lab within a campus that contains solar, battery, and thermal resources bridges the operational side to the customer side, which has traditionally been their own centers of gravity. Employee training, data and analytical services, and collaboration with businesses and universities are additional objectives of the lab. This presentation will briefly discuss Avista’s history of innovation, an overview of the campus, an introduction into the lab’s testing capabilities, and finally a few use cases that are currently underway.
(Speaker) Daniel Burgess (Senior Analyst at Avista)Dan Burgess is a Senior Business Analyst. He received his B.A in Economics from University of Washington in 1991 and MBA from Eastern Washington University in 1998. Starting in 2009, he has collaborated across the organization and has participated in many strategic initiatives, research projects, and analyses. His most recent success was identifying a $16+ million net savings opportunity in the gas meter department. In addition to work at the Avista Energy Innovation Lab he continues his lead role in Avista’s AMI deployment.
(Speaker) Mike Diedesch (PE, Manager Grid Innovation Lab at Avista)
Mike Diedeschis the Avista Grid Innovation Lab Manager. He received his B.S. in Electrical Engineering from Washington State University in 2008 and is a registered Professional Engineer in Washington. Since joining Avista Utilities in Spokane, WA, he has worked in various engineering roles including Generation Controls, SCADA, System Protection, Metering, and Smart Cities Lead.____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Subject: Is It EthicalThis link below to a Wired article raises interesting ethical issues which are beginning to appear in our world of analytics. With the advent of smart devices and the ability to remotely control them, comes along questions of who can control them, how can they control them and should these controls be regulated? I asked one of my goto people for ethics issues and he said while the issue of controlling customer thermostats does raise ethical issues, since it was not a compliance issue he did not want to comment. What do you think? As we progress into greater levels of analytics these questions will be more frequent. How intrusive can a utility be? What’s your thoughts?
