    Thanks for posting Kevin,
This is an important question and one that we have looked at in terms of how a utility’s AMI data is used throughout their business, to create revenue or generate cost savings.
At the last UAI Power Hour, the community was very generous to discuss how their AMI data weaves its way through the enterprise and creates monetary benefits.
We at TEA would be happy to discuss how we support our clients’ data management needs with your contact at CLP Hong Kong.
Let me know if we can help in anyway.

    Kind Regards,
    –Beth

    Hello UAI data focused members!

An interesting question came in from a new member of CLP Hong Kong and I’m hoping to get some help from our community. The question surrounds data monetization and advice to those in the early stages of their data journey. Please take a look at the question below and let us know if we can provide any additional information. As always we appreciate your help and look forward to seeing your responses and making a connection with our new member!

    Question:

“We’re looking internally at the maturity of our data journey within our organization and also exploring data monetization. Either directly (APIs) or indirectly through data driven services (e.g. supporting finance industry for example). Are there any utilities that are doing this as well that would be willing to connect? We are still at the early stages of our journey, but would be nice to chat to a few folks.”

    Thanks again for your help!

    Hello Safety Analytics Community Members,

Thank you to those that reached out individually and via the discussion forum regarding the July Community placeholder. It seems as though my new domain, kpraet@sg.utilityanalytics.com may be blocked on some of our member’s servers and we’re working through this issue internally with IT to see what we can do. In the meantime please do the following if you’re not  seeing a calendar placeholder for Tuesday, July 27th at 2:00 PM CT.

    Hello Grid Analytics Community Members,

I hope all is well! We are one week away from our July Grid Analytics Community Conversation and want to get you excited about the session taking place. On Wednesday, July 21 at 1:00 PM CT, We’ll be joined by Jordan Pino, Sr. Data Scientist, Smart Grid & Innovation at Baltimore Gas & Electric (BGE/Exelon Utilities) and his presentation,  “BGE Pole Analytics: Descriptive, Predictive, and Prescriptive.” As this discussion will be interactive, we urge you to come prepared with questions and ready to share your input.

Learn more about this session and our speaker below!

    Session Description:

This project aims at providing descriptive, predictive, and prescriptive analytics for vehicular pole hits across BGE. The main motivation for this use case is decreasing O&M, increasing reliability, and increasing safety. The ability to obtain descriptive analytics for past pole hits within BGE’s service territory along with a predictive/prescriptive metric for each pole allows for a targeted approach in terms of mitigation efforts to reduce hits. This targeted approach to pole mitigating coupled with domain-specific knowledge allows for data-driven decision making when it comes to the prevention of pole hits within our service territory.

Speaker: Jordan Pino, Sr. Data Scientist, Smart Grid & Innovation at Baltimore Gas & Electric (BGE/Exelon Utilities)

“Jordan is currently a Senior Data Scientist at Baltimore Gas & Electric (BG&E) where he works within the smart grid & innovation sector (e.g. grid, unmanned aerial systems, data analytics, and research and development) on data analytics solutions. Specifically, he focuses on the development storm-impact models for BG&E’s system to be used as decision-support tools coupled with the development of machine learning models to enhance BG&E’s system performance and hardening efforts.”

    Hi Samantha,

What are some of the data points available to you? At Exelon Utilities we have found speeding, harsh acceleration, and hard braking to be significant behaviors. We developed a risk score based on a combination of these factors, normalized by distance driven (so, alerts/mile). These risk scores are helping drive adoption among fleet managers as part of our safe driving program. In our telematics data, there are many different parameters for speeding (raw mph, or percent over speed limit, or raw mph over speed limit, plus a threshold of time for each, i.e. speeding at least 10 mph over the speed limit for at least 2 minutes). There are also parameters we can set for what triggers a harsh acceleration or hard braking alert. We started with correlation analysis and looking at distributions of alerts to get an idea of overall behavior.

    Hope this helps!

    Hi All,

We are implementing Telematics in our fleet vehicles.  Is anyone using this technology and data to improve your Safe Driving Program?

We are curious to know what data parameters or approaches are used by other utilities to measure good (or needs improvement) driving behaviors.  For example, our Integrated Security team uses phishing email campaigns to identify employees that need refresh training on security best practices. Wondering if others are using telematics to customize Safe Driving training in such ways.

    Thank you!

    Hello Enterprise Analytics Community Members,

I hope all is well! We are just under one week away from our June Enterprise Analytics Community Conversation and want to get you excited about the session taking place. On Thursday, June 24 at 1:00 PM CT, we’ll be joined by Steve Payne, IT Architect Sr, and Audrey McAfee, Business Analyst at AEP, who will be leading a presentation on, Adding Context to Data and Analytics through Geospatial Dashboarding. As this discussion is interactive, we encourage you to come prepared ready to ask questions and share your insight.

Learn more about this session and our speaker below!

    Session Description:

American Electric Power (AEP) has had a GIS footprint for the last 20 years, but has recently been visualizing Distribution metrics and analytics results through the use of Geospatial dashboards. The GIS context unlocks a self-service platform that brings data from multiple systems and puts it in one place for the end users. Out of this work AEP has experienced value in two major ways: By reducing the amount of time it takes for gathering data from multiple systems for more meaningful research, as well as allowing a broader audience to view the data without having to request from a more specialized team that has access to mapping and/or reporting tools. This session will be an overview of AEP’s solutions in the GIS platform along with a discussion around GIS and analytics.

Steve Payne (IT Architect Sr at AEP)

Stephen “Steve” Payne has been an IT Professional at AEP for over 12 years and was a founding member of the analytics services organization at AEP. He presented at the UAI conference in 2017 in San Antonio on the topic of residential customer segmentation. He lives in Cleveland Ohio with his beautiful wife, three kids (two sons and a daughter) and two black labs.

Audrey McAfee (Business Analyst at AEP)

Adrianna “Audrey” McAfee has been a Business Analyst (requirements gatherer, communicator, and application tester) for 7+ years, with her most recent position working at American Electric Power (AEP) on a team that develops GIS dashboards.  These dashboards display data by way of a geospatial platform in order to provide internal customers with the tools needed to identify areas of reliability risks. She lives at home in Dublin, OH with her feisty and vocal cat, Luna, and likes to escape from her by taking long bike rides or hitting the water on her paddleboard.

  • Hello Asset Health Analytics Community Members,

I hope all is well! We are just under one week away from our June Asset Health Analytics Community Conversation and want to get you excited about the session taking place. On Wednesday, June 23rd at 2:00 PM CT, we will be joined by Jatinder (Jay) Singh, VP of Digital and Data Transformation at CPS Energy, who will be leading a presentation on, How to Productize Analytics to Drive Higher Value for the Organization. As this discussion is interactive, we encourage you to come prepared ready to ask questions and share your insight.

Learn more about this session and our speaker below!

    Session Description:

In today’s new energy economy, decision-makers want analytics to provide not only insights but actionable business recommendations and they want them at their own convenience and in a form that is easy to consume. One such path-breaking approach is ‘productizing’ analytics services or in other words, creating products based on standardized and repeatable analytics services. Businesses have shown preference to switch from the project-based consulting to these product offerings as they exemplify the decisions-first approach. Productionalizing analytics can lead to true democratization of the analytics as business users don’t have to depend on their analytics partners to churn the analyses and can access the analytics whenever they want it and how they want it.

Jatinder (Jay) Singh, VP of Digital and Data Transformation at CPS Energy

Jay Singh is responsible for leading the Digital Experience and Enterprise Advanced Analytics teams to leverage advanced digital and data technologies to deliver value to our customers and employees. He is focused on building out an actionable, long-term digital strategy and advanced data road maps. Meanwhile, concurrently, and incrementally, he’s leading his team to improve customer and employee experiences and deliver other technological capabilities that complement our enterprise strategies.

Jay has over 17 years of both business and technology experience in delivering strategic and tangible value and outcomes.

He has an MBA in Finance and Strategy from the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, VA, and a Bachelor’s in Production Engineering from SBS College of Engineering and Technology (Punjab, India).

Subject: Upcoming June (2021) Grid Analytics Community Conversation

    Hello Grid Analytics Community Members,

I hope all is well! We are just under one week away from our June Grid Analytics Community Conversation and want to get you excited about the session taking place. On Wednesday, June 16 at 1:00 PM CT, we’ll be joined by Daniel Burgess, Senior Analyst and Mike Diedesch, PE, Manager Grid Innovation Lab at Avista Corporation who will be leading a presentation on, Avista Energy Innovation Lab. As this discussion is interactive, we encourage you to come prepared ready to ask questions and share your insight.

Learn more about this session and our speakers below!

    Session Description:

The Avista Energy Innovation Lab was built within a Net Zero Campus located at the University District in Spokane, WA. The lab contains sophisticated equipment to allow for simulation and testing of distribution systems. For instance, how would a feeder respond to the addition of batteries and solar. Locating the lab within a campus that contains solar, battery, and thermal resources bridges the operational side to the customer side, which has traditionally been their own centers of gravity. Employee training, data and analytical services, and collaboration with businesses and universities are additional objectives of the lab. This presentation will briefly discuss Avista’s history of innovation, an overview of the campus, an introduction into the lab’s testing capabilities, and finally a few use cases that are currently underway.

Daniel Burgess (Senior Analyst at Avista)

Dan Burgess is a Senior Business Analyst.  He received his B.A in Economics from University of Washington in 1991 and MBA from Eastern Washington University in 1998.  Starting in 2009, he has collaborated across the organization and has participated in many strategic initiatives, research projects, and analyses.  His most recent success was identifying a $16+ million net savings opportunity in the gas meter department.  In addition to work at the Avista Energy Innovation Lab he continues his lead role in Avista’s AMI deployment.

Mike Diedesch (PE, Manager Grid Innovation Lab at Avista)
