Learn more about this session and our speaker below!

    Session Description:

At SoCalGas, engineers used to inspect gauges regularly to monitor pipeline pressures. The newly installed Advanced Meter network and electronic pressure monitors (EPM) generate large volume of high-resolution pressure data. This is a great opportunity. The pressure sensor data can help SoCalGas to mitigate the risk of over-pressure incidents and protect our customers and pipelines. This is also a challenge. The data set is too big for manual examination. It is not integrated with other data such as AM and weather. Its patterns, trends, and correlations are not fully understood. And we don’t have advanced analytical methods for detection or prediction. In this session, you will hear a story where gas engineers, industrial engineers, data scientists, and IT together incubated data analytics ideas to reduce over-pressure incidents.

Yang Chen (Project Manager II at SoCalGas)

Yang Chen is a data scientist at Southern California Gas Company. He supports teams across all areas to solve the most complex business problems. He uses open-source software, cloud services, and self-developed programs to accomplish data analytics tasks, ranging from data reporting and visualization to optimization and machine learning.

  • Hello Grid Analytics Community Members,

I hope all is well! We are just under one week away from our June Grid Analytics Community Conversation and want to get you excited about the session taking place. On Wednesday, June 16 at 1:00 PM CT, we’ll be joined by Daniel Burgess, Senior Analyst and Mike Diedesch, PE, Manager Grid Innovation Lab at Avista Corporation who will be leading a presentation on, Avista Energy Innovation Lab. As this discussion is interactive, we encourage you to come prepared ready to ask questions and share your insight.

Learn more about this session and our speakers below!

    Session Description:

The Avista Energy Innovation Lab was built within a Net Zero Campus located at the University District in Spokane, WA. The lab contains sophisticated equipment to allow for simulation and testing of distribution systems. For instance, how would a feeder respond to the addition of batteries and solar. Locating the lab within a campus that contains solar, battery, and thermal resources bridges the operational side to the customer side, which has traditionally been their own centers of gravity. Employee training, data and analytical services, and collaboration with businesses and universities are additional objectives of the lab. This presentation will briefly discuss Avista’s history of innovation, an overview of the campus, an introduction into the lab’s testing capabilities, and finally a few use cases that are currently underway.

Daniel Burgess (Senior Analyst at Avista)

Dan Burgess is a Senior Business Analyst.  He received his B.A in Economics from University of Washington in 1991 and MBA from Eastern Washington University in 1998.  Starting in 2009, he has collaborated across the organization and has participated in many strategic initiatives, research projects, and analyses.  His most recent success was identifying a $16+ million net savings opportunity in the gas meter department.  In addition to work at the Avista Energy Innovation Lab he continues his lead role in Avista’s AMI deployment.

Mike Diedesch (PE, Manager Grid Innovation Lab at Avista)

Hello Asset Health Analytics Community Members,

I hope all is well! We have a very exciting Community Conversation planned for this month and hope you all can join us. On Wednesday, April 28 at 2:00 PM CT we’ll be joined by several speakers discussing the topic An Analytics Approach to Vegetation Management. This meeting is a “do not miss” opportunity to learn and connect with speakers from different utility and solution provider companies on the topic of analytics in vegetation management. Special thanks to the following members/speakers for their involvement:

    • Facilitator: Charlie Schaeffer, IT Director – Ameren
    • Panelists:
      • David Martin, Sr. Manager, Vegetation Management – Evergy
      • Rebecca Afsar, Civil Engineer – WAPA
      • Ron Adams, General Manager of Vegetation Management – Duke Energy
      • Tom Martin, Vice President of Product, Data Science Division – E Source

To learn more about this session and our speakers see below!

    Session Description:

Maintaining vegetation is one of the leading challenges for utility companies. Trees and branches can cause power lines to fall – leading to service interruptions and potential wildfires. Vegetation can be one of the leading drivers in power outages. Traditional approaches to vegetation management has involved time-consuming and costly on-site inspections, relying primarily on human observation. Now, to address this challenge more proactively, utility companies are moving towards an analytics approach to vegetation management. Join us for this panel discussion to learn from multiple utilities, including:

    • How an analytics approach to vegetation management gets put into action
    • What does the data science approach to vegetation management look like
    • Business benefits that have been realized with an analytics approach to vegetation management
    • We will learn how a utility will use existing asset management data for transmission lines and apply that data to solve vegetation management project priorities. This utility has information on consequence of failure of transmission lines, but they don’t currently apply it to their vegetation management methodology. they will share information on a proposal in the works to help fix that
    • A solution provider will share how they have helped their utility partners deploy vegetable management data science projects to help them reduce their veg budget with no negative impact to safety or reliability.

    Facilitator:
Charlie Schaefer (IT Director at Ameren)

Charles Schaeffer directs a team of managers, engineers, and software developers within Ameren Digital’s application development function. Solutions including OMS, DMS, Asset Management, Field Work Management, and various analytic and analysis systems for the Distribution and Generation business units.
