Subject: Upcoming April 21 (2021) Natural Gas Analytics Community Conversation – Predicting Gas Burn for AES Power Legacy Out-of-Merit Gas Generators.

Hello Natural Gas Analytics Community Members,

I hope all is well! We have a very exciting Community Conversation planned for this month and hope you all can join us. On Wednesday, April 21 at 11:00 AM CST, we’ll be joined by Community Sponsor Erin Boyd, Global Director of Commercial and CX AI/ML at AES, and Andres Figuerola, Data Scientist at AES, who will be leading a presentation on Predicting Gas Burn for AES Power Legacy Out-of-Merit Gas Generators.

Learn more about this session and our speakers below!

    Session Description:

In this discussion, Andres Figuerola and Erin Boyd will present on analytics deployed to support the operations of legacy natural gas assets in the California Wholesale market. Specifically, generators in the California market are dispatched according to a least-cost solution in which participants submit bids to provide a given quantity of energy at a specified price. While an oversimplification, awards to generate are based on an economic ordering of cost and dispatched from lowest cost to higher costs until all demand is satisfied. However, the market operator can also dispatch units based on non-economic reasons, including reliability, with AES’s legacy assets falling into this category. These assets would otherwise not win an award based on cost for most hours within the year. The non-economic dispatch of these assets makes the procurement of gas to generate more difficult and uncertain as reliability can be difficult to predict based on fundamentals. Algorithms to thus predict whether these units would be called on for the following day were developed along with a prediction of the gas burn if called on. This presentation will provide an overview of this work, including supporting inputs, challenges, and next steps.

Erin Boyd – Global Director of Commercial and CX AI/ML at AES:

Erin Boyd is a PhD economist passionate about energy and data and devoted to data-driven insights and state-of-art advanced analytics. Half quant, half strategist, Erin has worked in over 30 countries throughout the world on a diverse range of projects: masterplans for electrification in Africa and Asia; policies and incentives to attract investment in renewables in developed, emerging and developing countries; demand response and innovative pricing in Europe and the United States; and energy sector development plans the world over; to name but a few. Currently serving as Global Director of Commercial and CX AI/ML for AES, prior roles included leading research and analytics for both the customer programs and day-ahead/real-time trading floor at PG&E, SVP of Economics and Market Strategy for a San Franciscan energy start-up and Managing Economist for Economic Consulting Associates.

Andres Figuerola – Data Scientist at AES:

Andres Figuerola is a PhD mathematician, currently working as a Data Scientist in commercial projects at AES. With a background in Algebraic Geometry, he is currently interested in optimization, time series forecasting, and exploring the use of high-level abstract mathematics in real world problems. Andres has participated in projects related to hydrological energy dispatch, gas market predictors, renewable energy pricing and demand. He is also passionate about creating data science pipelines and exploring cloud architectures. In his spare time, he enjoys playing music and thinking about Algebra/Topology.

On Thursday, March 25 at 1:00 PM CST, we’ll be joined by Marie Clark, Analytics Center of Enablement Lead at Eversource, who will be leading a presentation on, Analytics Use Case Intake Process and Prioritization: Ensuring You Are Focused on Delivering Maximum Business Value. For more information on this session and our speaker please see below!

Marie Clark – Analytics Center of Enablement Lead at Eversource

Marie Clark has led successful data management and analytic initiatives for 20+ years. She is a skilled intrapreneur, standing up data practices in various size companies in multiple industries – utilities, financial services, healthcare, manufacturing, and media. As a former Lean Six Sigma Master Black Belt, Marie is process oriented and has a mindset of continuous improvement, which she applies to each new data practice. Currently, Marie is leading the Analytic Center of Enablement at Eversource, the goal of which is to accelerate the enterprise adoption of data-driven decision making and artificial intelligence.

    Session Description:

As use case requests rapidly pick-up pace due to the importance of using analytics to make business decision across the enterprise, how are organizations prioritizing their use cases? Some organizations may use a consulting firm’s proprietary optimizer, others are looking at Gartner’s ROAR process, and some use an internal process for ingesting new use cases. What is your organization using to prioritize use cases? What does that process look like? How do you monetize the projects as they come in (earn revenue from or add value to the business)?

Join us for this session to learn how Eversource Energy ingests and prioritizes new use cases to ensure they are focused on delivering maximum business value. We will then take some time for Q&A and open discussion, so other utility members can share their use case intake and prioritization process.

Subject: Upcoming March 23rd Safety Analytics Community Conversation

    Hello Safety Analytics Community Members,

I hope all is well! We have a very exciting Community Conversation planned this month and hope you all can join us. On Tuesday, March 23rd at 2:00 PM CT, we’ll be joined by Community Sponsor Ankush Agarwal, Director, T&D Analytics at Exelon Utilities, who will be facilitating our March “Solve My Problem” exercise. This exercise will explore three problems/challenges brought about by Safety Analytics Community members during our January (2021) Getting to Know Your Exercise. Please see below to learn more about this upcoming session.

    Session Description:

The “Solve My Problem” session will be delivered in a way that will encourage partnered collaboration between members to come up with solutions and/or action plans to help members solve real-time “problems”. During conversations about the “problems”, we encourage members to showcase their successes, share experiences and lessons learned. We encourage open, interactive dialogue throughout the exercise to create a vibrant and collaborative environment, and to ensure everyone in attendance receives an opportunity to voice their opinions and ideas. The ultimate goal is that you gain valuable insights from the supportive and knowledgeable group of peers meeting during this Community Conversation.

Come prepared to discuss the following “problems” during the Safety Analytics Community “Solve My Problem” exercise!

    • Problem #1: Data Governance challenges
    • How do you handle “getting access to data” within your utility?
    • How do you manage “data quality”?
    • What does “data completeness” look like within your utility?
    • How are you keeping your data clean (data cleanliness) and storing data (data storage)?
    • What data capturing systems/apps are you using? How are you managing them?
    • “Having data at all.”  (I’m not sure how to pose a question around this one)
  • Problem #2: People/Culture challenges
    • What are you recommendations for “getting top down buy-in”?
    • How are you handling “change management, i.e. changing the culture to provide data using technology”?
    • How are you handling “Culture change, i.e. embracing the fully digital by field crews is seen as ‘big brother’ or pointing out flaws rather than opportunities for improvement?”
    • How do you handle “time management, i.e. Our safety department is small and getting to the next level of safety analytics will be slow as people wear many hats and don’t have much time to dedicate solely to analytics?”
    • How are you handling “change management, i.e. the adoption of safety analytics” within your utility?
    • How are you handling the “adoption of leveraging data, analysis and qualifying data, personnel accountability” within your utility?
    • How do you “make sure safety analytics are user-friendly, understandable and useful for consumers (safety managers, etc.)”?
  • Problem #3: Leading/lagging Indicators for Safety Performance and Safety Observation Data
    • What leading indicators are being used in conjunction with lagging indicators to give an overall picture of safety performance?

    Hello Grid Analytics Community Members,

I hope all is well! We have a very exciting Community Conversation planned for this month and hope you all can join us. On Wednesday, March 17th at 1:00 PM CST, we’ll be joined by Brad Gall, Senior Data Architect, Connected Analytics at The Energy Authority (TEA) who will be leading a discussion on “Getting More Dollars from your CVR Events.” During this discussion we’ll hear directly from The Energy Authority (TEA) on the successes of a  “Voltage Insights” service they recently worked on with a PJM member. See below to learn more about this session and our presenter Brad.

Brad Gall – Senior Data Architect, Connected Analytics at The Energy Authority

Brad Gall is a Cloud Data Architect with over 20 years’ experience in Information Technology and Data Analytics. Working primarily with Microsoft data platforms, Brad has successfully delivered data driven projects across multiple industries in both corporate and consulting roles. In his current role as Senior Data Architect with The Energy Authority, Brad works on the Connected Analytics team to help utilities leverage value from the increasing amount of data pouring in from big data sources such as Smart Meters.

    Session Description:

The Energy Authority (TEA) provides analytics solutions to our utility members. A recent success was to provide one of our PJM members with a service known as Voltage Insights that provides financial analysis on savings potential from an existing CVR program. Our Voltage Insights service allows them to interrogate their CVR events and test ‘what-if’ scenarios on voltage drops by feeder lines to identify areas for distribution cost savings, maintenance needs as well as infrastructure upgrades. In this session we will discuss how we delivered this service to leverage the utility’s AMI data for increased revenue from their monthly CVR program.

Come prepared to discuss the following “problems” during the Natural Gas Analytics Community “Solve My Problem” exercise!

Facilitated by: Catherine McCowan, Manager, Integrity and Asset Management Governance at Enbridge

    • Problem #1: How are you dealing with antiquated systems that don’t talk to one another at your utility?
    • Problem #2: What are your practices for identifying market data drivers?  For example:
    • What do we see as factors that drive things like long range demand for natural gas?
    • Home energy use reports and behaviors that drive down usage?
    • How to use analytics to predict growth areas for customers?, i.e. can market data and analytics tell us where growth and trends are going?

Subject: Upcoming March 9 Customer Analytics Community Conversation

    Hello Customer Analytics Community Members,

I hope all is well! We have a very exciting Community Conversation planned for this month and hope you all can join us. On Tuesday, March 9th at 11:00 AM CST we will be joined by Community Leader Daniel McCrobie, Sr. Analyst at SRP, and Gary Rector, Data Scientist at SRP who will be presenting on, “Why are you charging me for 8 scoops of ice cream when I just wanted 1!?!? Alerting customers before it becomes a high bill.” During this meeting community members will learn about a new program at SRP that helps customers detect high bills. Learn more about this session and our presenters below!

    Session Description:

“At Salt River Project, we know that high bills are one of the worst experiences for customers. We recently launched a program that will alert customers that their bill may be higher than normal on the day after we detect the high usage. We provide tips and self-service options for customers so they can identify what may be wrong and fix it sooner rather than waiting to get a bill for an entire month of high usage.

Using analytics, a Hadoop system, and a data lake of meter readings, we calculate an expected value for each account. The usage from yesterday is compared to this expected value for yesterday’s temperature and day of the week. We will then send an alert if usage is statistically different than what was expected.

Join us to go over the specifics of this alert and how this was perceived by a pilot group of SRP customers. No one wants to pay for more ice cream than they ordered!”

Daniel McCrobie – Sr. Analyst at SRP

Daniel McCrobie is a senior analyst for Salt River Project, where he does Market, Customer and Employee Research. Daniel enjoys a unique challenge in research and focuses his clients on measuring behaviors in addition to attitudes where possible. Outside of work, Daniel enjoys snowboarding in winter months, motorcycles for most of the year and lives in Scottsdale Arizona.

Gary Rector – Data Scientist at SRP

Gary Rector has worked as a programmer and applied mathematician for a span of five decades, so he has seen many “next generations” of tools. He is currently a data scientist at Salt River Project-so far, the best twelve years in his career.
