  • Hello Enterprise Analytics Community Members,

I hope all is well! A few weeks ago I had posted about an AMI/MDM survey I’m working to complete with Santee Cooper and we’ve already been seeing some great feedback. To best help Santee Cooper in this area I’m hoping we can get several others to complete and I’m turning to this community for your help. If you or a colleague has any experience working with AMI/MDM we’d be very interested in hearing from you on our short survey. Both utility and vendor members are welcome!

For utility members, please use following link:

For data analytics providers/vendors , please use following link:

    * Target Response Submit Date: Tuesday, March 2, 2021

Being such a popular topic, Santee Cooper has agreed to share their results with anyone who’s interested. Please DM me for more information or any questions.

    Thanks again for your help!

    Hello Enterprise Analytics Community Members,

I hope all is well! I’m currently working with a member from Santee Cooper who is interested in hearing from utilities & vendors on their experiences with AMI/MDM. With several members having experience implementing AMI and MDM I wanted to circulate within this community and gather any input.

Debbie from Santee Cooper put together a quick survey both utility and vendor members can take. It would be a huge help if you can take a few minutes to complete the survey below, Debbie is even happy to share any results with you and your teams!

    Hello Data Science Community Members,

I hope all is well! We have a very exciting Community Conversation planned for this month and hope you all can join us. On Tuesday, February 16th at 1:00 PM CST, we’ll be joined by Alex Elder, PhD, Data Scientist from The Energy Authority, and his presentation, “Estimating Electricity-Elasticity of Gross Regional Product in the United States”. Please see below to learn more about Alex and his session.

Alex Elder, PHD, Data Scientist – The Energy Authority

Alex Elder is a Data Scientist at The Energy Authority where he focuses on load forecasting, economic analysis, and renewable resource optimization. Prior to joining TEA in July of 2020, Alex spent two years developing quantitative multi-asset trading strategies at Diversified Trust, an investment management firm in the southeast. Alex holds a PhD in physical chemistry and an MS in chemical engineering from Georgia Tech as well as a BS in math and chemistry from the University of Puget Sound.

    Session Description:

Energy’s role in the economic growth of industrialized nations has shifted over the past few decades as production efficiency has improved and manufacturing’s share of GDP has decreased. This process has been associated with increased demand for electric power as a clean and efficient alternative to other fuels such as gasoline and diesel. In this talk, Alex will explore how we can measure the effects of regulation and technological change on electricity demand with county-level granularity. His goal is to demonstrate how publicly available data can be incorporated into decision processes for individual utilities when their own historical data is sparse or non-representative due to technological and regulatory changes.

Hello UAI Safety Analytics Community Members,

Happy New Year and I hope you all had amazing holidays! It’s been a little while since we last connected and I’m very excited to announce our FIRST community conversation/exercise of the year, “Getting to Know Youtaking place Tuesday, January 26th at 2:00 PM CT. The Safety Analytics Community has been growing every week and we want to take an opportunity to regroup with new/existing members and discuss future topics and areas of interest in the Safety Analytics Community. Learn more about this session below and see how you can best prepare!

    Session Description:

Between January – December 2020, the Safety Analytics Community level set. Members collaborated amongst safety, data science, IT and operations professionals across the utility industry to share current and planned safety analytics initiatives, lessons learned, obstacles faced, and achieved and desired results. Through this scan of utility safety efforts, members have learned innovative ways to use analytics, better understood the current state of utility safety analytics, and closed in on their envisioned future desired state, as well as gained a better idea of what is needed to close the gap to their success.

During 2021, we now want to take a deeper dive into safety analytics. This session is designed to help us all get to know each other better, understand the use cases you are working on, and your successes and challenges, so we can better plan content for 2021 Safety Analytics Community Conversations that is timely, relevant, and valuable for our members.

Come to January’s session prepared to answer questions regarding your maturity level as it relates to safety analytics, as well as your safety analytics successes and challenges. We also want to learn what topics or use cases you would like to hear discussed during future Safety Analytics Community Conversations, so we can deliver programs that match your needs and interests. We encourage you to join us for this session to help us shape the monthly Safety Analytics Community Conversations! See you online on January 26!

Hello UAI Grid Analytics Community Members,

Happy New Year and I hope you all had amazing holidays! It’s been a little while since we last connected and I’m very excited to announce our FIRST community conversation/exercise of the year, “Solve my Problem,” taking place Wednesday, January 20th at 1:00 PM CT. This interactive exercise will examine two “problems” and explore solutions or action plans to solve in real time. Learn more below!

    Session Description:

The “Solve My Problem” session will be delivered in a way that will encourage partnered collaboration between members to come up with answers, solutions, and/or action plans to help members solve these real-time “problems”. During conversations about the “problems”, we encourage attendees to showcase your successes, share experiences and lessons learned, share your failures (sometimes we learn just as much from “what not to do”). We want everyone to gain valuable insights from the supportive and knowledgeable group of peers meeting during today’s Community Conversation. We encourage open, interactive dialogue throughout the exercise to create a vibrant and collaborative environment, and we want to ensure everyone in attendance receives an opportunity to voice their opinions and ideas.

We will spend about 25 minutes discussing each “problem”, so come prepared to discuss the following during the Grid Analytics Community “Solve My Problem” exercise!

“Problems” for the “Solve My Problem” Exercise:

    • How are you navigating innovation change management across your business partners in Operations, Engineering & Customer to optimize your products & solutions like ADMS, GRID Modernization, Advanced Analytics?

    • Scenario: We are migrating off of our current enterprise asset management platform and changing to another one. We are implementing new processes and going through digital transformation. Problem: What are your learnings & best practices to embrace process and digital transformation, when migrating your enterprise asset management platform?

Hello UAI Data Science Community Members,

Happy New Year and I hope you all had amazing holidays! It’s been a little while since we last connected and I’m very excited to announce our FIRST community conversation of the year, “Burning Questions,” taking place Tuesday, January 19th at 1:00 PM CT. This interactive discussion will explore several burning questions requested by the Data Science Community and include the perspectives of several different utilities. Please see below to learn more about this session!

    Session Description:

Join the Data Science Community on Tuesday, January 19, 2021 from 1:00 – 2:00 PM CT for a facilitated, interactive exercise to discuss hot topics and answer some “burning questions” with your fellow Data Science Community members. We will take time to discuss member requested topics, including:

    • Do you conduct code review? If so, how?
    • Did you make adjustments to your load forecasting regarding COVID-19? And if yes, what data did you use and how did you use it?
    • How do you streamline “pre-processing data” (aka 80% of data science is getting data set up before the actual analytics) and how do you deploy data science?
    • What’s the division of responsibility for data ‘pre-processing’ or engineering? Is this handled by your data scientists or an IT team?
    • What’s your biggest ‘data science win’ to date? (i.e. project that had the most impact to your organization)

This “Burning Questions” session will be delivered in a way that will encourage partnered collaboration between members to answer these identified questions, as well as any other questions you may have for your data science peers.

When answering questions during the session, we encourage members to showcase your successes, share experiences and lessons learned, and gain valuable insights from the supportive and knowledgeable group of peers meeting during this Data Science Community Conversation. See you online on January 19!

Hi Kevin:  give me a call and we can discuss further.   In short, at Avista we have built out “job families” with a progression within a “data science” job family as well as a “data science engineer” job family.   Each family has a progression (from beginner to expert) to allow for employee development as skills are enhanced & developed.     The Data Science Engineer is distinct from the traditional Data Engineer, in that it has a bent towards analytic and business facing awareness, not just data.    The Data Science job family is for the Data Scientist roles.  We have been recruiting from local universities for beginner data scientists as part of our strategy with community partnering.    I’ll ask our HR department if we can share our job families with each of the two listed above, as they contain the descriptions. responsibilities, skills for each.

    Aloha to all,

    Good Afternoon UAI Members,

Happy Friday and I hope you’ve all had a great start to the new year! I’m currently working with a utility member who was interested in hearing from others on any roles, responsibilities, or job descriptions they might have for Data Scientists. Specifically if you have a template in place for this role, we’d be very interested in learning more.

As always I appreciate your help and look forward to seeing your input.

    Thanks!
