Hello UAI Members,
Happy Wednesday and I hope all is well! While on site at UA Week (during a discussion around statistics) an attendee shared a great quote from Mark Twain which I wanted to share with you all below. I’m sure several of you have math/statistics quotes (both serious and funny!) and encourage you to share below alongside me.

Session Description:
Publicis Sapient’s client, Sira-Kvina, generates 5% of Norway’s energy from seven hydro power sites. It wanted to build predictive models using its IOT and sensor data to determine hydro generator component failure risk and do preemptive maintenance. The team was able to leverage time series SCADA data + control systems + protection systems + maintenance data, across 16 generators.– Visual abstract model of the generator systems and components.– Machine learning sprints to create ML and survival analysis models, 6 years of historical data. The solution reduced complexity from 1000 to 10 most critical sensors. It also enabled better planning of periodic maintenance schedules and improved predictive performance 5x times.Next steps: Prototyping the use of large language models (Gen-AI) to determine if operator logs can serve as indicators of upcoming equipment problemsSession Takeaways – Attendees will learn how to:1. Apply AI/ML to asset component performance and failure2. Use the insights to align maintenance cycles to improved asset performance3. Hello UAI Members,
I want to once again end your Wednesday with some #wisdom in the form of a simple (but all too important) quote from everyone’s favorite childhood hero, Charlie Brown! I want to shout out my colleague @Sandi as well for turning me on to the “It’s The Great Pumpkin” movie which I’m embarssed to say I did not watch until last week … great film Sandi!
Without further ado here’s an important lesson we can all take from Charlie and the Peanuts gang. If you have a piece of wisdom you would like to share (or maybe just another great Peanuts quote) we’d love to hear from you below!

I hope all is well! We are just under one week away from our October (2023) Data Science Community Conversation and want to get you excited about the session taking place. On Tuesday, October 17 at 1:00 PM CT, we’ll be joined by Erik Smith, Climate Resilience Analyst, Energy Systems and Climate Analysis Group at EPRI who will be leading a discussion around, “Leveraging Weather and Climate Data for Power System Applications.” As this discussion will be interactive, we encourage you to come prepared with questions and your inight.
Learn more about this session and our speaker below!
Session Description:
Energy companies, regulators, policymakers, and other industry stakeholders require science-based insights about the future power system and the climate conditions under which it will operate to identify optimal adaptation and resilience investments. To meet this need, EPRI is leading two major initiatives, the Climate READi Initiative and the Load Forecasting Initiative. Through the Climate READi initiative, EPRI is leveraging its collaborative model to convene the global thought leaders and scientific researchers necessary to build an informed and consistent approach to facilitate analysis and application of climate data, while the Load Forecasting Initiative is focused on improving short-term load forecasts as well as developing a framework for long-term load forecasts. This talk will provide an overview of ongoing work in these initiatives to assess currently available climate data and provide guidance for using this data in power system applications. It will also discuss data gaps (i.e., lack of hourly climate projections) and current methods being implemented to fill those gaps. Lastly, this talk will touch on ongoing work to leverage weather and climate data for improved operational and long-term load forecasting.
Speaker: Erik Smith, Climate Resilience Analyst, Energy Systems and Climate Analysis Group (EPRI)
Erik Smith is a Climate Resilience Analyst in the Energy Systems and Climate Analysis Group at the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI). At EPRI, Dr. Smith leads research on climate impacts and resiliency of the electric power sector. His research focuses on how climate change will alter long-term averages and extreme weather events and the impact these changes could have on resource adequacy, system reliability, long-term load forecasting, among other things.

I hope all is well! I want to conclude your Wednesday with a little #wisdom from one of my favorite athletes, Simone Biles! Though this quote is short and simple, I believe it serves as an important reminder that we’re all unique and have more to give.
See below and, as always, if you have a quote you would like to share in our #WisdomWednesday thread I encourage you to reply below.
“I’m not the next Usain Bolt or Michael Phelps… I’m the first Simone Biles.”

I hope all is well! We are one week away from our September (2023) Asset Health Analytics Community Conversation and want to get you excited about the session taking place. On Wednesday, September 27 at 2:00 PM CT, we’ll be joined by Matan Gandelman, Product Owner, Image Analytics Capability at SDG&E who will be leading a discussion around, “SDG&E’s AI-Powered Asset Management & Inspections Reducing Wildfire Risk.” As this discussion will be interactive, we encourage you to come prepared with questions and your insight.
Learn more about this session and our speaker below!
Session Description:
The Digital Innovation team scaled the Intelligent Image Processing (IIP) initiative, designed to help address one of the region’s greatest challenges: the evolving and expanding threat of devastating wildfires.Intelligent Image Processing is an innovative human + machine partnership and IT solution that leverages Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) to rapidly detect assets and damages in millions of images captured via drones and mobile devices in the field. Over 3.4+ million images of equipment in high-risk fire areas have been ingested and analyzed by in-house-built ML models. Once images are uploaded to a central cloud repository, the visualization platform supports the review process for a qualified electrical worker. They validate the algorithm by annotating the images detecting SDG&E assets and visible damages, which further trains the model. Previously, the start-to-end process was manual and time-consuming; on average taking a team of 10 a day to get through 2,000 images. Today, 27,000 images are examined in the same amount of time. This capability shows the true value of a human + machine relationship and how the future of work can be more efficient and effective in the long term, moving with speed and agility. This program is a “first-of-its-kind” cloud-based solution for the San Diego-based utility and demonstrates how the cloud can fuel innovation. SDG&E received the 2021 CIO 100 award for its use of innovative technology to deliver greater business value and enhanced customer experience. Since our initial proof of concept, we have deployed 94+ asset, damage, and third-party attachment detection capabilities that can identify fire risks in images in CPUC-defined high-fire threat areas. As new imagery is captured across the service territory, IIP will continuously flag damaged assets for human validation. The program has expanded to leverage LiDAR for vegetation encroachment identification, passive and active mobile phone image capture for asset and damage detection, and future-state integration of satellite imagery to provide context for the entire service territory.Key Takeaways:• Learn how SDG&E’s innovation framework enables the organization to rapidly test and scale programs that drive informed technology investments and add value to the business• Gain an understanding of how SDG&E is using cloud technology and AI to predict asset and damage predictions in areas across their High Fire Threat Districts• Experience firsthand the capabilities of SDG&E’s Intelligent Image Processing through a live demonstration• Recognize the capacity to scale Intelligent Image Processing and learn about SDG&E’s plans for future asset management and inspection initiativesSpeaker: Matan Gandelman, Product Owner, Image Analytics Capability (SDG&E)Matan Gandelman, Product Owner of SDG&E’s Intelligent Image Processing (IIP) platform, an image analytics tool. IIP is a human + machine partnership leveraging imagery and artificial intelligence in the cloud to drive value across the entire organization and customer base to lower risks, improve compliance programs, and operate assets more safely and reliably. With over 7 years of experience in the Sempra family of companies, Matan has held various IT roles before taking on his current position._____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________A calendar placeholder for this community conversation was sent out via my alternate email address (kpraet@sg.utilityanalytics.com).
