Subject: Upcoming January 12th Community ConversationHello UAI Customer Analytics Community Members,
Happy New Year and I hope you all had amazing holidays! It’s been a little while since we last connected and I’m very excited to announce our FIRST community conversation of the year, “Best Practices on Improving Customer Experiences with Analytics During COVID-19,” taking place Tuesday, January 12th at 11:00 AM CT. This panel themed discussion will feature the perspectives of several different utilities in one of the most demanded topics presented to this community. Please see below to learn more about this session and our presenters!
Session Description:
We have all been dealing with COVID and we are again seeing emerging infection rates, state shutdowns, etc. so it is now more important than ever to share “best practices” on how utilities have dealt with this and how they are preparing through this next wave. Customer analytics plays a huge role in this, so we have multiple utilities sharing their insights and experiences through this panel discussion during the Customer Analytics Community Conversation on January 12, 2021. Our representatives will discuss how they are caring for their customers during the pandemic, making enhancements based on data to improve customer experiences as things change rapidly during the pandemic, and many more items on the work they have done. During this panel discussion, each utility participating on the panel will quickly provide a brief summary of the work they have done to set the stage, and then we will spend most of our time having a conversation to create a collaborative, interactive environment during this Community Conversation. Come with your questions and comments.

Subject: Updating an Existing Data Schema – DS CommunityHello Data Science Members,
I hope everyone had a nice weekend! I posted this question to our Ask Your Network Community but also wanted to circulate here.
A member came to me this morning with an interesting question regarding Data Schema and I’m hoping some one can provide some insight. The question is listed below:
“Basically, we want to update an existing data schema that describes our 5 min SCADA data readings. The schema was “custom built” a while back to meet our own needs. One path to update it is to make some enhancement to it by adding new attributes or properties. Another path is to adopt an industrial schema or standard but I just don’t know what are the good options out there.”
Has anyone done work in this area that may have good insight?
Thanks for your help!

Subject: Upcoming October 28 Asset Health MeetingHello UAI Asset Health Analytics Community Members,
I hope all is well! This is just a quick reminder to join us next week, Wednesday, October 28th at 2:00 PM CT, for our “Asset Health Analytics Solve my Problem” exercise. Special thanks to our Community Sponsors/Leaders for facilitating and helping to organize.
During the exercise, we will be addressing the challenges brought about in our “Getting to Know You Survey” and kickoff meeting. Please see below for a full session description.
Session Description:
Join the Asset Health Analytics Community on Wednesday, October 28that 2:00 PM CT for an interactive”Solve My Problem”exercise facilitated by Community Sponsors and Leaders and UAI staff. The session described below has been designed with input directly from members of the Asset Health Analytics Community which was captured from the “Getting to Know You” survey and exercise during the kick-off Community Conversation.
The “Solve My Problem” session will be delivered in a way that will encourage partnered collaboration between members to come up with solutions and/or action plans to help members solve real-time “problems” (“problems” can be interchangeable with the word “challenges”). During conversations about the “problems”, members will showcase their successes, share experiences and lessons learned, and gain valuable insights from the supportive and knowledgeable group of peers meeting during this Community Conversation. We encourage open, interactive dialogue throughout the exercise to create a vibrant and collaborative environment, and to ensure everyone in attendance receives an opportunity to voice their opinions and ideas.
During this interactive exercise, attendees will collaborate to come up with solutions and/or action plans that can be used to address the “problems”. Come prepared to discuss the following “problems” during the Asset Health Analytics Community “Solve My Problem” exercise!
Problem 1: Transmission Line Inspection Process and Scenario, Facilitated by Chris Lyles, VP of Asset Planning & Management – Western Area Power Administration (WAPA):
– How do you take transmission structure inspection data and use it to drive repair or replacement decisions at the transmission segment level? (i.e. Making asset replacement/maintenance decisions)
– Scenario: We are in the process of upgrading our transmission line inspection tool. This tool collects transmission line component’s condition which drives our t-line structure health. Problem: How do you ensure that the inspection tool accurately captures data and allows integration into our CMMS to perform asset health analytics and improve work management
Problem 2: COTS vs In-House – Facilitated by Charlie Schaeffer, Director of IT – Ameren
– What are the pros and cons of commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) vs.in-house development of analytics platform selection?___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Subject: Upcoming October 20th Data Science MeetingHello Data Science Community Members,
I hope all is well! This is just a quick reminder to join us next week, Tuesday, October 20th at 1:00 PM CT, for an exciting discussion around “A Python Experiment: Identification of High Voltage Transmission Line Asset Renewal Initiatives Using Structure-Based Information.” Mike White, Local Relations Consultant at American Transmission Company (ATC), will be leading the discussion and taking questions throughout.
Learn more about Mike and our session below!
Session Description:
Analysts review several factors when determining if line maintenance or rebuilds are required. Many of these factors examine the status of a particular line as a whole, rather than based on variables specific to individual transmission structures (poles).
Based on more robust data collection and powerful new modeling tools, this project attempted to use machine learning and deep learning methods to automate the process of predicting the need for a transmission line rebuild based largely on information at the structure level.
The session will include information on how Mike used information at the structure and line level to train models based on a binary classification problem of determining necessity for a t-line rebuild. The presentation will describe the problem, methods used, results and conclusions, as well as next steps. All analysis was performed using python, so Mike will provide a high-level overview of the methods and techniques used. Please bring your questions, as this session will include Q&A and open discussion.
Mike White (Local Relations Consultant at American Transmission Company (ATC)
Mike joined ATC full time in 2017 where he serves a variety of communication and public relations roles, including as a local relations representative working directly with elected officials and government staff as well as coordinating public outreach efforts to impacted stakeholders. In addition, Mike serves as a core team member of ATC’s data analytics, AI & machine learning initiative. He is also an advisor on the development of company-wide business applications.
In 2002 Mike co-founded The Shop Consulting and served as President of one of Wisconsin’s premier public affairs and strategic communication firms. Mike’s diverse background has included serving as a key strategist and solutions developer for multiple state and nationwide organizations, utilities and businesses.
Prior to forming The Shop he graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and worked in both policy and technology positions for the Wisconsin Legislature. He recently earned a master’s degree in Data Science from the University of Wisconsin Data Science Program.

MemberSeptember 21, 2020 at 4:08 am in reply to: Upcoming September 23 Kickoff Meeting – What You Need To Know!Hello Asset Health Analytics Community Members,
I hope everyone had a nice weekend! We’re very excited to kickoff our Asset Health Analytics Community with you Wednesday, September 23rd at 2:00 PM CT and look forward to hearing your voice in our “Getting to Know You” exercise. This community has been welcoming new members every day and we’re pleased to already see a huge amount of diversity. As a reminder, and for those members just joining, the below is our agenda for Wednesday’s exercise. I have provided the Microsoft Teams link at the bottom of the message and on the original invite. If you’re not seeing on your calendar, reach out to me ASAP so we can be sure to send.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Come prepared to share the following on September 23. We will spend a couple of minutes on each member, so preparing in advance will help keep us on task. The community leadership team and UAI staff will go first to help break the ice!
- Name
- Company
- Title/Role
- Share one interesting thing that recently happened in your life – examples: I recently got a swim spa at my house or I recently adopted a new puppy (I did not get a new puppy, but this was a fun example) 😊
- Please describe one recent success that you have experienced within your role, team, or organization regarding asset health analytics
- Please describe one of your biggest challenges that you will face over the next year within your role, team, or organization as it relates to asset health analytics
- What is one topic that you would like to hear discussed during a future Asset Health Analytics Community Conversation?
Please find a couple of meeting preparation notes that will help you better prepare:
- When it is your turn, quickly go through the first four bullets above, because we definitely want to spend the majority of our time on the last three bullets. We will capture notes on the last three bullets
- This Community Conversation on September 23 is a special 90-minute session, which will ensure we have enough time to go around the virtual “room” and allow everyone on the call to share
- Arrive a few minutes early if you can, because we will try to start promptly at the start time, again to ensure everyone gets a chance to share
- If you can and want to, please join us on audio AND video during this call
- Don’t underestimate the value of “face-to-face” interaction. It allows the entire group to become familiar with one another, which in turn will help create meaningful relationships that leave all members feeling more satisfied.
- Please know we want this to be a comfortable environment, so if you don’t want to or cannot join us via video that is okay. It is not required.

Subject: Upcoming September 23 Kickoff Meeting – What You Need To Know!Hello UAI Asset Health Analytics Community Members,
We could not be more excited to kick-off the UAI Asset Health Analytics Community! For our first meeting, we think it is important to spend some time getting to know each other, which in turn will help us better connect and collaborate during future monthly Community Conversations. This first Community Conversation on September 23 is a special opportunity to introduce yourself and share your successes, challenges, and topics of interest that will help us build a foundation for success for future Community programs.
Please review the below information to properly prep for the first Asset Health Analytics Community Conversation on September 23 at 2:00 PM CT.
In the meantime, I will send you Microsoft Teams Meeting login information for this online event, so keep an eye out.
Please know this exercise during our first Asset Health Analytics Community Conversation on September 23 will accomplish a couple of important things:
- It will help the members of this Community get to know each other better, which in turn will:
- Build trust between members; boosting productivity, communication, and cohesion
- Help strengthen the engagement of the members participating in this community, increasing our collaboration during meetings
- Help you gain more value out of the topic discussions in the future, because more sharing is taking place due to the outcomes of really getting to know one another
- Help you build lifelong professional relationships, so you have a core group to reach out to anytime you need help
- It will help us learn about each other’s recent successes and upcoming challenges:
- This will help us all better understand where we are within our analytics journey and what problems we are trying to solve
- This will also help us build out topics of discussions for future community meetings, better aligning our discussions with the things that matter most to you – real-time and future facing
Please let us know if you have any questions. We can’t wait to see you online during the first Asset Health Analytics Community Conversation on September 23!
Thanks!

Subject: Upcoming September 16th Natural Gas Analytics MeetingHello Natural Gas Community Members,
I hope all is well! We have a very exciting presentation lined up next week, Wednesday September 16th at 11:00 AM CT, and hope you all can join us. This month we will be focusing on “How to Use Power BI to provide a new and exciting perspective on otherwise ‘boring’ data,“ and are joined by a great group of utility presenters.
Please see below for a session description and more info on our presenters:
Session Description:
Please Join the UAI Natural Gas Analytics Community on Wednesday, September 16 at 11:00 AM CT to learn how to feature your best data story through a “Show & Tell” style session. Erik Frank, Gas Planning Manager at Madison Gas & Electric Co., and J.C. Zannis, Manager of Structuring & Analysis & Will Culpepper, Structuring & Analysis at Southern Company will share and provide a demo on how they use PowerBI to provide a new and/or exciting perspective on otherwise “boring” data. We will learn from each member:
– For what items are you using Power BI?
– What are you plugging into Power BI to give a new view on otherwise “boring” data?
– How are you using Power BI to feature your data story?Erik Frank will share examples of Power BI dashboards that are operations focused. J.C. Zannis and Will Culpepper will focus on natural gas used for power generation.
Our Presenters This Month:
Eric Frank
Eric Frank is the Gas Planning Manager at Madison Gas & Electric Company in Madison, WI where they serve approximately 168k natural gas customers. At MGE, he is responsible for the growth and reliability of the natural gas distribution system, as well as managing the distribution integrity management program and coordinating long and short-range budget planning. In the grand scheme of things, he’s considers himself the “new guy” to most in the utility industry, but he also sees a growing number of younger people coming on board (and desiring data-based decision making)! Will Culpepper
Will recently joined the Southern Company family in 2019 after spending the first four years of his career with AT&T in Dallas, TX where he participated in their Technology Operations Leadership Program. Through the program he spent time optimizing the cellular network, managing a support team, and identifying cost saving opportunities in the wireline network. In his current role, Will supports Southern Company Commercial Operations as a data analyst and business intelligence developer.
After earning his bachelor’s degree in wireless engineering from Auburn University, Will’s roles at AT&T exposed him to the value of understanding and practicing data analytics. This led him to pursue a master’s degree in data analytics from Georgia Tech which he expects to complete later this year.
He and his wife, Susan, live in Hoover, AL with their English Springer puppy, Scout. Will enjoys letting loose on mountain bike trails, traveling the world with his wife (COVID permitting), and discovering new food recipes.
JC Zannis
J.C. Zannis is the Manager of Structuring and Analysis, providing data analysis and visualization, portfolio analysis, fundamental production cost modeling, risk analysis, and deal structuring support to Southern Company Commercial Operations, Southern Wholesale Energy, and Southern Company’s retail operating companies.
Prior to his current role, J.C. was Manager of Gas Trading and Optimization for Southern Company Generation where his team was responsible for reliably managing the daily supply of gas to the power generating fleet, while minimizing cost to customers and optimizing Southern Company Generation’s gas transportation, storage and supply assets.
In 12 years at Southern Company J.C. has also spent time in Finance, Operations, and Portfolio Management. J.C. graduated from The University of Alabama with a bachelor’s degree in economics and philosophy and later earned a master’s degree in economics from the University of Florida.

- The Voices of Experience|Artificial Intelligence guide is finally live on SmartGrid.gov! UAI worked with NREL on this important guide:
Voices of Experience is an initiative sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Electricity’s Advanced Grid Research group designed to bring utilities together to share their knowledge, insights and lessons learned through implementing the emerging technology that is reshaping the electric power industry.
The information in this guide came directly from UAI Utility members and other utility staff who are working through the challenges of building internal skill sets, investing in a new set of technologies to access and manage more data than ever before, and demonstrating its value to their organizations. Utilities engaged in developing AI capabilities have learned lessons and gained insights along the way that can be applied to other utilities preparing for the data-driven future. The goal of this guide is to provide information that might not be accessible elsewhere-the kind you might get from talking to a colleague at a neighboring utility.
Download the guide here!
- New UAI Communities Launching this September!
Finally, UAI is proud to announce the launch of three additional communities this September. The following are now available and can be registered using our same community request form here.
