    Hello Grid Analytics Community Members,

I hope all is well! We are one week away from our September (2023) Grid Analytics Community Conversation and want to get you excited about the session taking place. On Wednesday, September 20 at 1:00 PM CT, we’ll be joined by Yang Weng, Assistant Professor, School of Electrical, Computer and Energy Engineering at Arizona State University who will be leading a discussion around, “Utility Data Analytics via Machine Learning.” As this discussion will be interactive, we encourage you to come prepared with questions and your insight.

Learn more about this session and our speaker below!

    Session Description:

Deep penetration of distributed energy resources (DERs) calls for improved monitoring of power systems against reliability and security issues. For example, the low observability in some distribution grids makes monitoring DERs hard due to limited investment and vast coverage of distribution grids. Past methods proposed machine learning models with limited explainability. However, critical energy infrastructure needs assurance. For such a need, this talk shows how to design assured machine learning for power system monitoring via a twin structure of two learning agents, namely the AI-based and physics-guided models. The twins will collaborate adaptively to minimize the learning error while maximizing physical consistency. The structure ensures good generalization properties of the learned models. We then illustrate how twin models can be used to design cyber-attacks that can bypass the chi-squared test on bad data without the system information and discuss how to monitor and mitigate such attacks. Finally, we will demonstrate how the proposed methods are validated using our utility-connected hardware-in-the-loop microgrid.

Speaker: Yang Weng, Assistant Professor, School of Electrical, Computer and Energy Engineering (Arizona State University)

Yang Weng received his Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University (CMU). Upon graduation, he joined Stanford University as a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Precourt Institute for Energy. He is currently an Assistant Professor in the School of Electrical, Computer, and Energy Engineering at Arizona State University (ASU). He is the consortium chair for Energy Cyber, a joint center established by the US Department of Energy and the Israel Ministry of Energy. Yang’s research interests are power systems, data science, and cybersecurity. Yang received the NSF CAREER Award, AFOSR YIP Finalist Award, Amazon Research Award, Outstanding IEEE Young Professional Award, Outstanding Faculty Mentor Award, and Centennial Award for Teaching. Yang also received 9 Best Paper Awards, the Winner Award for International Competition on Innovation and Entrepreneurship, and 2nd Place in Accuracy/1st Place in Speed for the RTE International Competition on “Learning to Run a Power Network” in 2019. ABB Fellowship and Stanford Tomcat Fellowship also recognize his work.

    Hello UAI Members,

It’s hump day which means we wanted to start another fun #WisdomWednesday thread! Often times with a long weekend coming up, I find myself getting a little more stressed than usual trying to accomplish and get everything done but have found the following quote useful in keeping me relaxed and grounded. There’s no reason why we can’t be relaxed and still accomplish everything on our lists, in fact staying relaxed will only benefit us in the long-run!

    Hello Safety Analytics Community Members,

I hope all is well! We are just under one week away from our August (2023) Safety Analytics Community Conversation and want to get you excited about the session taking place. On Tuesday, August 22 at 2:00 PM CT, we’ll be joined by Elif Erkal, PhD, Senior Associate at Exponent who will be leading a discussion around, “Moving Beyond Injury Rates: Best Practices in Measuring Safety to prevent serious injuries and fatalities (SIF).” As this discussion will be interactive, we encourage you to come prepared with questions and your insight.

Learn more about this session and our speaker below!

    Session Description:

We cannot manage what we cannot measure. The success of any safety management system heavily depends on the quality of metrics it measures to evaluate safety performance. Traditionally, the industries use incident rates that only capture the counts of incidents as their main method of safety performance measurement. However, recently both industry and academia concur that these rates are too limited in their capacity to facilitate robust safety performance measurements to inform safety decision-making and predictions. In this presentation, Dr. Elif Erkal explores the limitations of injury rates and presents new and improved strategies that could help improve safety performance measurements.

Speaker: Elif Erkal, PhD, Senior Associate (Exponent)

Dr. Elif Erkal is a Senior Associate in the Construction Consulting practice of Exponent. She has a PhD in Construction and Engineering management from University of Colorado Boulder specializing in safety performance measurement and predictive analytics for serious injury and fatality prevention. Her focus is on data and knowledge management systems, predictive analytics, organizational design; providing technical, analytical, operational, and organizational support in various industries including utilities and construction. Previously, she worked in the oil and gas industry as a contracts manager and completed her earlier graduate work in Carnegie Mellon University, which had an emphasis on operational networks, and organizational learning in construction.

    Hello UAI Members,

Happy start of August! I hope everyone is enjoying the final month of summer and dodging the extreme heat. During today’s #WisdomWednesday thread, I wanted to share a quote around #persistence and the important lessons we can all learn through sticking with something.

This quote comes from Condoleezza Rice. I hope you enjoy and take something from her message!

“I’m very glad my mother didn’t let me quit piano lessons at age 10. She said I wasn’t old enough or good enough to make that decision, and she was right. I remember at the time I was shocked. I did not like that my mother said those things to me. But when I got a chance to play with Yo-Yo Ma or more recently with Aretha Franklin, I thought, I’m really glad she said what she did.”

I know several folks are out of office on a much deserved summer vacation but for those of you still in office I wanted to share a short poem for this week’s #WisdomWednesday. The poem below comes from Catherine Pulsifer who has become a recent favorite for me. If you have a wisdom themed poem I’d love to hear from you below as well!

    Easy is as easy does,
    Who hasn’t heard that phrase?
But what really does that mean,
If you don’t do, easy never finds the way?

There are so many different ways,
    That messages are tangled in.
Find a quote or poem you like,
Then make sense of what is says.

    Sometimes you may not understand,
But then there will be times you do.
And those times are when we truly benefit,
And bring the message into view.

Wisdom finds us in many ways,
It’s up to us to allow it to help.
Many people benefit from these thoughts,
And it’s a way to allow yourself to self-help.

Hello Asset Health Analytics Community Members,

I hope all is well! We are one week away from our August (2023) Asset Health Analytics Community Conversation and want to get you excited about the session taking place. On Wednesday, August 23 at 2:00 PM CT, we’ll be joined by Dr. Nanpeng Yu, Associate Professor, Electrical and Computer Engineering at University of California, Riverside who will be leading a discussion around, “Data-Driven Predictive Maintenance of Distribution Transformers.” As this discussion will be interactive, we encourage you to come prepared with questions and your insight.

Learn more about this session and our speaker below!

    Session Description:

This session covers a method for the predictive maintenance of distribution transformers. That is, a method of predicting which transformers are most likely to fail soon. Once predicted, such transformers may be subject to maintenance or replacement. This practice reduces the costs and increases the reliability of power distribution systems. The practice is common in transmission systems. In that domain, physical methods such as dissolved gas analysis see fantastic results. Data-driven techniques utilizing DGA data are also popular. But such methods are cost prohibitive for distribution systems. Instead, this paper proposes to utilize a data driven framework for the task which only uses readily available data. Such data include the transformers’ specification, loading, location, and weather-related information. Such data inspire the use of two suitable machine learning algorithms. The first is random forests. The second is the Random Undersampling with AdaBoost (RUSBoost) algorithm. These algorithms are tested on over 700,000 distribution transformers in Southern California. This test finds that both algorithms outperform the current state of practice. Further, it finds that the RUSBoost algorithm performs better than the Random Forest.

Speaker: Dr. Nanpeng Yu, Associate Professor, Electrical and Computer Engineering (University of California, Riverside)

Dr. Nanpeng Yu received his B.S. in Electrical Engineering from Tsinghua University, Beijing, China, in 2006. Dr. Yu received his M.S. degrees in Electrical Engineering and Economics and Ph.D. degree from Iowa State University in 2010. Before joining University of California, Riverside, Dr. Yu was a senior power system planner and project manager at Southern California Edison from Jan 2011 to July 2014.

Currently, he is an associate professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of California, Riverside, CA. Dr. Yu is the recipient of the Regents Faculty Fellowship and Regents Faculty Development award from the University of California. He received multiple best paper and prize paper awards from the IEEE Power and Energy Society General Meetings, IEEE Power and Energy Society Grand International Conference and Exposition Asia and the Second International Conference on Green Communications, Computing and Technologies.

Dr. Yu is the director of the Energy, Economics, and Environment Research Center at UC Riverside.
