I hope all is well! Last week we started a fun #WisdomWednesday thread here which I’m hoping to continue. During challenging times we often look for inspiration and one of the best ways I find myself getting inspired is through quotes from some of my favroite authors or leaders.
This week, I ask you help our growing thread by sharing one of your favroite inspirational quotes. If you’re struggling with ideas, Pinterest has been my go to but I’m hoping to see some unique ones and add some new ones to my personal list.
Thanks again!

Subject: Wisdom Wednesday – Help us by Sharing an Inspirational QuoteGood Morning UAI Members,
Happy Wednesday! I was scrolling through Pinterest the other day when I discovered a great new idea for our #WisdomWednesday trend. The idea this week is to share an inspirational quote, either a quote you just saw or something you’ve had in your back pocket for awhile. Simply share your quote in the discussion thread below or (extra brownie points) if you have a graphic of your quote you would like to include. The goal in doing this is to create a thread we can refer back to when times get tough and we need an extra pick-me-up!
I’ll get us started with a great quote I found the other day. I look forward to seeing what you all have as well!

I hope all is well! We are one week away from our May (2023) Natural Gas Analytics Community Conversation and want to get you excited about the session taking place. On Wednesday, May 17 at 11:00 AM CT, we’ll be joined by Mark Knox, Former Director of Resource Management Forecasting at Southern Company Gas and Jesse Woods, VP of Data Science at E Source who will be leading a discussion around, “Analytics for Leak Detection forecasting and workforce optimization in Natural Gas.”
Learn more about this session and our speakers below!Session Description:
Leaks pose a critical challenge for sustainability and safety in natural gas. Applying data science to this problem more accurately predicts the types of leaks and the quantity forecasters can expect within a given service territory. The results of this leak forecasting not only allow for better prediction (an improvement in prediction error rate from 20% to as low as 5%), but also better work/resource allocation – allowing utilities to more accurately forecast their resourcing needs within a service territory based on the expectation of upcoming leaks. Thus, reducing error rates, supporting call center optimization to handle expected incoming calls from leaks, and work resource planning. The net result: a reactive approach replaced with a predictive and prescriptive approach.Learn more about how E Source applied this solution and the methodologies used for leak forecasting detection.Speaker: Mark Knox, Former Director of Resource Management Forecasting (Southern Company Gas)
Mark Knox is an executive consultant at E Source’s Data Science Division and is the owner of MAK Business Solutions. He recently retired from his role as Director of Resource Management Forecasting and Organizational Effectiveness at Southern Company Gas in 2022 after 37 years. He is also a registered Certified Public Accountant in Illinois. Mark resides in Yorkville, Illinois with his wife of nearly 34 years and has two college-graduate children. He enjoys travel, sporting events, music, and the arts. He is a person of faith and is a leadership member of Community Christian Church.Speaker: Jesse Woods, VP of Data Science (E Source)
Before taking the role of vice president, Jesse Woods led the client success group for E Source Data Science. Jesse has helped E Source develop its grid capital deployment and customer-centric data science product lines through consistent delivery of solutions, which bring immediate ROI to the utilities using them.

I hope all is well! We are one week away from our May (2023) Customer Analytics Community Conversation and want to get you excited about the session taking place. On Tuesday, May 16 at 11:00 AM CT, we’ll be joined by Jeremy Cappello, Principal Marketing Specialist, Small Business Energy Efficiency at DTE Energy who will be leading a discussion around, “Data-Driven Customer Engagement for SMB Energy Efficiency.” As this discussuon will be interactive, we encourage you to come prepared with questions and your insight.
Learn more about this session and our speaker below!
Session Description:
The small-to-medium business (SMB) market can be challenging to engage and discuss their energy needs and opportunities to save. Many SMB customers typically do not have a dedicated energy manager and have limited time and budget to consider energy upgrades. Traditional approaches to reach these customers are usually focused on mailings, and cold calls or “in person visits”. At DTE in Michigan, their SMB program manager and E Source partnered up to use data science to better target the right SMB customers, at the right time with the right message. Typically marketing campaigns will segment SMB customers by their industry attributes, such as NAICS or SIC codes. These give high level insight into what the business does, but these industry attributes alone do not really provide any depth into really understanding a customer and what incentivizes them. This leads to making assumptions and prematurely discounting their propensity to contribute. The DTE data science approach differs by using novel feature engineering during the modeling stage to create new features from raw data, increasing the predictive power of learning algorithms. Along with industry attributes, DTE added energy usage behavior, interaction behavior, firmographics and building structural attributes. As well as local market features.Session Takeaways:• Understand the full picture of each customer and their energy needs through an “Audience of One” data science approach• Using leading AI models we generate predictions in their behavior and likeliness to participate in future energy savings offers based on historical data of “like” customers• Generated a propensity score for each customer to understand their driving factors for participation, their potential contribution to the program and how to engage them• On-going actual and predictive results are visualized in E Source’s OneInform tool• Visibility into the current SMB customers that have participated in energy efficiency programs and how much they are contributing to savings.• Ability to predict who will most likely contribute to energy savings and how much savings those customers are likely to contribute• Second phase of the project is to hand off this OneInform tool with the actual and predictive information to DTEs Energy Advisors to assist them in deciding who to visit and have information on that customer to help facilitate the energy discussionSpeaker: Jeremy Cappello, Principal Marketing Specialist, Small Business Energy Efficiency (DTE Energy)
Jeremy Cappello brings over 10 years of utility experience with a background in regulatory policy, portfolio design and strategic marketing. For the last 4 years, he has had the responsibility of developing DTE Energy’s small business EE programs and pilots. His education includes a BBA from the University of Michigan and an MBA from Wayne State University.

Hello UAI Members,
We’re still collecting responses for our previous #WisdomWednesday post and would love your input! @Michael and @Aaron got us kicked off with some great information and I’m hoping other members might be able to follow suit. We’re again not looking for anything lengthy or time consuming in these #WisdomWednesday posts but instead just a quick hit or lesson learned on a project you’re working on.
1.) Quick (few sentence) description of a project you’re working on
2.) One thing you’ve learned while working on this project that you would like to pass on to others
Thanks in advance and I look forward to your input and learning more from you!

Subject: Wisdom Wednesday – Working on an Exciting Project? We Want to Hear From You Below!Good Morning UAI Members,
Happy hump day and I hope everyone’s had a great start to their week! Due to UA Summit, it’s been a little while since our last #WisdomWednesday post and I was hoping to get another thread started for us today.
Getting back to our original theme, I want today’s Wisdom Wednesday thread to surround current projects you’re working on at your utility or solution provider company. Think of this as a glorified show and tell! With all of us working on so many interesting projects, I’m hoping you wouldn’t mind replying to this thread below with the following:
1.) Quick (few sentence) description of a project you’re working on
2.) One thing you’ve learned while working on this project that you would like to pass on to others
The goal of Wisdom Wednesday is to create a forum of quick hits/wins that we can all share and learn from. We thank everyone who has taken time to get involved thus far and look forward to your input throughout the day today.

Thank you so much for sharing these lessons learned! @Michael and @Aaron I know these will resonate well with other members.
To continue our #WisdomWednesday post from last week, I’m hoping some other community members wouldn’t mind sharing some quick hits and lessons learned as well. Remember this doesn’t need to be anything lenthy or elaborate, just a quick post highlighting a current project and a lesson you learned while working on the project that you think would benefit others.
I look forward to seeing your responses!

MemberApril 6, 2023 at 4:08 am in reply to: UA Summit 2023 – Thank You for Joining Us!!Hey @Greg thanks for reaching out and we apologize for any inconvenience/spam. I accidently posted an incorrect video link earlier (hence doubling up on messaging for this specific post) but will also talk with the team about condensing our messaging going forward.
In the meantime, I recommend adjusting your profile settings which will allow you to customize how you recieve notifications and which community(s) you recieve from. You can do this by clicking “My Account” through your profile page. From there, scroll down to “Community Notifications” and update the settings on any of the communities in your list to fit your preference. For example, scroll down to “UAI News” and select “Daily Digest” to get fewer emails than “Real Time”. You can also check the box for “Consolidated Daily Digest” or “Consolidated Weekly Digest” to receive even fewer emails.
If you have any questions or run into any issues please reach out to me directly at kpraet@utilityanalytics.com. We will again work to condense our messages going forward and apologize for any unwanted communications.
Thanks!

Subject: UA Summit 2023 – Thank You for Joining Us!!Hi Kevin – a couple of questions:
- Is there any interest in open source at UAI? I prefer open source whenever possible.
- I’m open to getting about one email a month. 2 emails a day is way too much spam. I would unsubscribe, but I figured I’d ask if you could turn down the fire hose.
