I hope all is well! We are one week away from our February (2023) Grid Analytics Community Conversation and want to get you excited about the session taking place. On Wednesday, February 15 at 1:00 PM CT, we’ll be joined by Tom Mahar, Principal Data Scientist at ComEd who will be leading a discussion around, “Distribution Pole Failure Prediction.” As this discussion will be interactive, we encourage you to come prepared with questions and your insight.
Learn more about this session and our speaker below!
Session Description:
As electrical infrastructure ages, prioritization of asset replacements has become a challenge for utilities. Which assets must be replaced immediately? Which assets still have useful life left in them? ComEd utilized a machine learning model to examine wooden distribution pole failure data and predict risk of pole failure. This model has allowed ComEd to prioritize replacement of distribution poles considering both failure likelihood and estimated customer impact. This presentation will discuss the project and model in detail.
Speaker: Tom Mahar, Principal Data Scientist (ComEd)
Tom Mahar is a Data Scientist at ComEd. Tom holds his bachelor’s degree in engineering from the University of Illinois Urbana Champaign and has 10 years’ experience in the electrical utilities space. His current work focuses on utilizing analytics to make the distribution system more reliable and he also has extensive experience in distribution system planning and design. Tom has implemented several successful use cases at ComEd; including machine learning models for prioritizing asset replacements and field verified outage prediction models. Tom believes utilities can deliver value to customers by focusing on practical applications for data and by embracing a DIY approach.

I hope all is well! We are just under one week away from our December (2022) Grid Analytics Community Conversation and want to get you excited about the session taking place. On Wednesday, December 14 at 1:00 PM CT, we’ll be joined by Ali Alvi, Principal Project Manager – Grid Modernization | Smart Grid & Technology at ComEd and Marianna Vaiman, CEO at V&R Energy who will be leading a discussion around, “Developing and Deploying a Distribution Linear State Estimator: One Utility’s Journey.” As this discussion will be interactive, we encourage you to come prepared with questions and your insight.
Learn more about this session below!
Session Description:
Using Machine Learning algorithm based on time series analysis of Synchrophasor (Phasor Measurement Units) data on ComEd’s distribution network. ComEd is currently the leading the electric utility industry in development of a Distribution Linear State Estimation (DLSE) platform, which is based on high resolution time synchronized data from PMUs to model and estimate linear state of power system, which ultimately provides enhanced visibility and real time situational awareness into the distribution network.
The reliable and resilient operation of a DER-rich distribution grid requires real-time monitoring and control. Distribution Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs) can provide time-stamped voltage and current phasor data at a high sampling rate, yielding real-time snapshots of electric distribution grids and microgrids. To leverage the synchrophasor data from distribution PMUs deployed within the Bronzeville Community Microgrid (BCM), ComEd implemented and tested a three-phase distribution linear state estimator (DLSE). The DLSE performs state estimation as fast as the PMU reporting rate, up to 60 times per second as compared to traditional state estimation (SE) which solves once every few minutes. This application can provide increased observability that supports real-time situational awareness and monitoring, aiding real-time control and optimization of the distribution system. With lab validation now complete, the technology is deployed in the BCM, a 7-MW community microgrid, to monitor two feeders.

On Tuesday, December 13th at 2:00 PM CT, we’ll be joined by Carter White, Quantitative Analyst and Sam Dean, Data Scientist at TVA who will be leading a discussion around, “AI and Machine Learning with Robots for Innovations in Safety.” As this discussion will be interactive, we encourage you to come prepared with questions and your insight.
Learn more about this session and our speakers below!Session Description:
TVA’s Enterprise Analytics team has been exploring the combination of AI and Machine learning with Robots for innovation. Spot, a robot produced by Boston Dynamics, was recently tested to automate data acquisition tasks. The team applied edge analytics, computer vision, and machine learning to allow Spot to collect data in various potentially hazardous environments without the need for an operator. The goal is to generate insights from various SPOT sensor data (camera images, LiDAR, thermal, acoustic, etc.) and allow engineers and field operators to perform asset and equipment inspections remotely from their computers, helping to keep them safe through reduced time physically spent in hazardous and/or high radiation areas . This session will include an overview of the technology used and how AI and Machine Learning are developed to apply intelligence to the data acquired. We’ll also discuss how these technologies can be applied to various use cases to reduce costs and drive employee safety.
Speaker: Carter White, Quantitative Analyst (TVA)
Carter White is a Quantitative Analyst working on the Enterprise Analytics team. During his time at TVA, he has worked to turn data into insights using machine learning and data analytics techniques. His projects have included item-recommender systems, computer vision and edge analytics applications, and robotics solutions.Speaker: Sam Dean, Data Scientist (TVA)
Sam Dean has been a data scientist with TVA’s Enterprise Analytics teams for just over 3 years working on projects primarily focused on the nuclear organization. Projects include intelligent text search applications, advanced statistics for equipment failure analysis and predictive maintenance, and most recently mapping and advanced image analytics with Spot the robot.

Subject: An Exciting New Resource on UAI Connect – Algorithm Alley!Hello Data Science Community Members,
I’m very excited to reach out today to introduce you to a brand-new resource we’re launching on UAI Connect called “Algorithm Alley”! Over the past year, the team at UAI has had the privilege of learning from and working with many of our data science members. Our takeaway? More and more members are wanting a resource on UAI Connect where they can upload and collaborate on various forms of code, script, and algorithms. We are both proud and excited to introduce you to Algorithm Alley and we look forward to growing this new initiative with you!
Want to get advice on your code or script? Maybe you want to collaborate on a machine learning algorithm? Algorithm Alley has you covered! Currently divided into four categories (Data Engineering, Data Visualization, Machine Learning Algorithms, and Programming) members will have the option of perusing through different entries while also being able to upload their own content. Furthermore, members can like/upvote certain entries and interact publicly or privately with each author. Please make sure any data uploaded to Algorithm Alley is not sensitive or private. Please refer to our code of conduct or reach out to me at kpraet@utilityanalytics.com if you have any questions or concerns.
To help get us started, @Andrew (Lead Enterprise Architect at Evergy) was nice enough to put together a short video tutorial. Please click here to watch! In addition, we’ve provided three examples from UAI Members @Kaleb (Data Science Supervisor at ONE Gas), @Phi (Data Scientist at San Diego Gas & Electric) and again @Andrew (Lead Enterprise Architect at Evergy).
You can find the direct Link to Algorithm Alley on UAI Connect at https://connect.utilityanalytics.com/ideation-home?IdeationConfigurationKey=9030adff-fa57-4ecb-a34c-aacbddc8cd50. We recommend you bookmark this URL.
Today I have decided to tease Algorithm Alley to our Data Science Community and our Executive Advisory Council Members, and we plan to launch to the broader UAI members in one month on December 1, 2022. By releasing Algorithm Alley to these two select communities, we want to fully test this resource over the coming weeks, tracking any user issues and taking suggestions on how we might be able to improve before our official launch. While you explore Algorithm Alley, please do not hesitate to reach out to me at kpraet@utilityanalytics.com if you notice any issues or have any suggestions.
**Please note Algorithm Alley is reserved only for UAI Utility Members. Solution Provider Members and non-members will not be able to access this resource.
