    Hello Safety Analytics Community Members,

I hope all is well! We are one week away from our October (2022) Safety Analytics Community Conversation and want to get you excited about the session taking place. On Tuesday, October 25th at 2:00 PM CT, we’ll be joined by Tony Klutz, Senior Industrial Hygienist at Avista who will be leading a discussion around, “A Paradigm Shift in Safety.” As this discussion will be interactive, we encourage you to come prepared with questions and your insight.

Learn more about this session and our speaker below!

    Session Description:

During the August 2022 session, Mike Quashne at BGE (An Exelon company) presented on “Energy-Based Safety and Analytics”, which included exploration of the definitions of Energy-Based Safety leveraging the EEI Safety Classification and Learning Model (SCL). The presentation covered an actual working model from the EEI Safety Classification and Learning Model (SC&L).

During our October session, Tony Klutz at Avista will present on the “back story” on why the EEI Safety Classification and Learning (SC&L) model is being developed.

Through the combined efforts of workers, employers, safety organizations and trade groups, the rate of recordable injuries has decreased over the past 10+ years. Unfortunately, the decrease in the more serious lost time injury rate has not followed the same pattern. This difference has led to further research looking at the assumptions behind the “Heinrich’s Safety Triangle”. The theory behind the triangle is to reduce the number of “Unsafe Acts” at the base of the triangle, which will shrink the number of fatalities at the top of the triangle.

Over the past few years recent research has shown that certain types of injuries have a higher potential to cause a serious injury or fatality (SIF). This has lead to a new way of reviewing injuries with an eye toward SIF potential. The Edison Electric Institute working with Dr. Matt Hallowell of the University of Colorado has developed the Safety Classification and Learning (SCL) model as a tool to review injuries and near misses with the goal of gaining as much knowledge as possible from certain types of injuries.

Further research in this area also includes the development of Precursors, Direct Controls and Leading Indicators. All of this has led to an entirely new view of the Heinrich Safety Triangle.

Speaker: Tony Klutz, Senior Industrial Hygienist (Avista)

Tony Klutz is the Senior Industrial Hygienist at Avista Utilities. He has been with Avista for 9 years. Prior to Avista, Tony worked for Itron and predecessor companies. Tony has worked in a variety of occupations over the years including Research and Development, Manufacturing Engineering and Health Safety and Environment.

Tony holds a bachelor’s degree in chemistry and physics from King’s College in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, Masters of Science in Materials Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and a Master of Business Administration from Clemson University, Clemson, South Carolina.

    Hello Grid Analytics Community Members,

I hope all is well! We are one week away from our in-person October (2022) Grid Analytics Community Conversation (co located at UA Week) and want to get you excited about the session taking place. On Tuesday, October 18 at 2:15 PT, we will feature a two part session hitting on the following areas:

Part 1: “Outage Prediction Using DA Devices and Fault Sensors” – Presentation with Q&A and open discussion led by Tom Mahar, Data Scientist at ComEd.

Part 2: “Which provides more value to the business: dashboard analytics vs. machine learning/deep learning?” – Tabletop Exercise: Debate (Facilitated by UAI Staff)

Learn more about this session and our speaker below!

    Session Description:

PART 1: Join the Grid Analytics Community on Tuesday, October 18, 2022 during UA Week in San Diego, CA for a presentation with Q&A and open discussion on “Outage Prediction Using DA Devices and Fault Sensors ” with Tom Mahar, Data Scientist at ComEd.
ComEd has developed an algorithm and visualization tool that finds areas of repeat fault activity for field inspection. Certain faults tend to be repetitive such as improperly tensioned spans that slap together in the wind. By identifying these fault signatures and correcting the issue future outages can be prevented.
    Session Takeaways:
    – How to identify frequent fault zones
    – Tips when trying to identify potential problems and sift through noise
    – Know the signs of damage that indicate a problem exists
PART 2: Join the Grid Analytics Community on Tuesday, October 18, 2022 at UA Week in San Diego to participate in a debate. Attendees will be split into two groups where they will work together to draft up an argument, for vs. against, to defend an important analytics topic or situation. Each group will have 20 minutes to work collaboratively to draft their argument and select a presenter(s) from within their group, and then each group will have 10 minutes to share their views (a fast paced 40 minutes).
Be prepared to exercise your innovative thinking and come with an open mind, as you may be purposefully put on the “for” team when you are actually “against” it and vice versa to help you think constructively to promote further development and advancement. Ultimately, we want to help you meet more people during this timeframe, take part in an interesting, informative, and collaborative activity, and most importantly to have some fun. The topic for the Grid Analytics Community is “Which provides more value to the business: dashboard analytics vs. machine learning/deep learning?”.

Speaker: Tom Mahar, Data Scientist (ComEd)

Tom Mahar is a Data Scientist at ComEd. Tom holds his bachelor’s degree in engineering from the University of Illinois Urbana Champaign and has 10 years’ experience in the electrical utilities space. His current work focuses on utilizing analytics to make the distribution system more reliable and he also has extensive experience in distribution system planning and design. Tom has implemented several successful use cases at ComEd; including machine learning models for prioritizing asset replacements and field verified outage prediction models. Tom believes utilities can deliver value to customers by focusing on practical applications for data and by embracing a DIY approach.

Learn more about this session and our speaker below

    Session Description:

Part 1: Join the Customer Analytics Community on Tuesday, October 18, 2022 at UA Week in San Diego, CA for a presentation with Q&A and open discussion on “Entergy Bill Projection: Predicting Customer Bills using Machine Learning” by Shraddha Sharma, Sr. Data Scientist at Entergy.
Entergy utilizes temperature and customer’s past usage patterns to predict electricity and gas bills. This gives customers insights into how their usage might be impacted with increasing/decreasing temperatures and plan accordingly. In this presentation, Shraddha will also briefly talk about the risks/challenges Entergy faced during the implementation process and lessons learned while transitioning from older models to a machine learning model.
Part 2: During the Debate, attendees will be split into two groups where they will work together to draft up an argument, for vs. against, to defend an important analytics topic or situation.
The topic for the Customer Analytics Community is “Should we allow customers to opt-in and opt-out to participate in data science programs? i.e. using their data (some customers are hesitant to opt-in) – using personal data for data science”

Speaker: Shraddha Sharma, Sr. Data Scientist (Entergy)

Shraddha Sharma works as a Sr. Data Scientist at Entergy where she has been working on customer and corporate related use cases. Prior to working t Entergy, Shraddha worked in Insurance, re-insurance, and the telecom domain. Shraddha graduated from the University of Connecticut with a Master’s in Business Analytics and Project Management. She is excited to be part of the UAI Customer Analytics Community

    Session Description:

During this session, learn how Eversource is transforming a basic safety tool, the Job Briefing, from a rote paper exercise into a dynamic digital experience. Come learn how following an Innovation/Design Thinking process has led to reimagining the field safety experience for Job Briefings. We aim to bring humanity to the basic form and in doing so promote engagement, improve safety, improve efficiency, and improve reporting. Learn how Eversource benefited from a cross-functional learning group to understand all of the stakeholders involved in job safety and the job briefing. Learn how Eversource evaluated 20+ technologies while prototyping on 3 different platforms before deciding on the most impactful solution. Learn how they plan to utilize the data that this new digital experience unlocks. Eversource started with a “How Might We…” exercise to see how we could make job briefings as serious as a pilot conducting pre-flight checks. We ended with transforming the job briefing from a rote, paper-based process to a dynamic, digitally interactive experience. We made disparate but relevant critical information quicker to access – all in an effort to make the field crew Job Briefing experience simpler, more human, and more engaging.

    Hello Grid Analytics Community Members,

I hope all is well! We are one week away from our September (2022) Grid Analytics Community Conversation and want to get you excited about the session taking place. On Wednesday, September 21 at 1:00 PM CT, we’ll be joined by Cara Gilad, Sr. Data Scientist (Exelon Analytics) and Jeffrey Swiatek, Principal Quant Engineer (PECO T&S Analytics) who will be leading a discussion around, “Substation Transformer Preventative Maintenance Optimization using Machine Learning.” As this discussion will be interactive, we encourage you to come prepared with questions and your insight.

Learn more about this session and our speakers below!

    Session Description:

Utilities have been heavily reliant on subject matter knowledge in the last century to drive PM program and schedule PM for a variety of assets. Our engineers are experts in the industry and have leveraged their and industry knowledge of asset measurements and inspection results to manage these programs, however, as human beings, we are limited in terms of considering a variety of factors and assessing the distribution of each factor. This is where data driven approaches shine and enables SMEs with checking million to billion combinations to come up with the best model to predict future. These models can then be used to supplement engineer knowledge, and support industry-wide acceptance of a systematic approach to transition to condition-based maintenance programs.

Latest model was validated against business-as-usual to provide 85% accuracy using success criteria developed for this project. PECO team is quantifying and confirming the benefits of model output to extract technical and data science success, including that model can be used in the real world “what would be do differently”

    Session Takeaways
    – Learn how Exelon and PECO T&S and Analytics teams have developed a novel machine learning model to recommend preventative maintenance (PM) for transformers at the right time to replace time-based preventative maintenance.
    – Learn about underlying on-premise and cloud analytics platform required to support this work, Exelon’s strong data-driven culture, focus on cross-collaboration and supporting diverse roles to work together to identify, ideate and solve problems.

Speaker: Cara Gilad, Sr. Data Scientist (Exelon Analytics)

    Session Description:

Data Scientist is an IT enabled job. Like most IT jobs focus on helping their organization use a particular technology, data scientists focus on helping their organization use data. Data scientists are experts in handling large amounts of data and are responsible for deriving business value. Some organizations establish a formal data science center of excellence to house a centralized team. The data science team is managed centrally but members are assigned to work with specific business operations and are accountable for helping those units reach their objectives to make data-driven decisions. Data science could be part of technology, but they also must work very closely with business; product and analytics.

With that said, Where should data scientists or data science departments report? Is it under IT or is it under the business? During this lively roundtable discussion, we will have a mix of participants from both IT and the business from Black Hills Energy, Duke Energy, and PPL sharing their opinions on this engaging topic. Join us to share your opinions and org structure examples to enhance the conversation during this roundtable.

    Hello Enterprise Analytics Community Members,

I hope all is well! We are one week away from our August (2022) Enterprise Analytics Community Conversation and want to get you excited about the session taking place. On Thursday, August 25th at 1:00 PM CT, we’ll be joined by @Vitha, Lead, Business Intelligence at Enbridge Gas Inc. who will be leading a discussion around, “Improving Analytics through Data Standardization, Data Transformation and Data Dictionaries.” As this discussion will be interactive, we encourage you to come prepared with questions and your insight.

Learn more about this session and our speaker below!

    Session Description:

Data inconsistencies is a major risk in analytics and can have huge impacts on the reliability of analytics results. Data inconsistencies happen throughout the data lifecycle – during data capture, data integration, data feeds into analytics environments and in the analytics process itself, with inconsistent assumptions among analysts. Three mechanisms/tools are very useful in addressing this risk namely Data standardization, Data transformation and Data Dictionaries. In this session, we will explore these three concepts with some examples.

Speaker: Vitha Krishnamurthy, Lead, Business Intelligence (Enbridge Gas Inc.)

    Vitha Krishnamurthy
is the Lead of Business Intelligence in Enbridge Gas Inc. based in Ontario, Canada. Enbridge Gas serves over 3.25 million customers in Ontario. Vitha holds a MBA from Ryerson University, Toronto and is a Certified Public Accountant (Illinois Board).
