  • Hello UAI Members,

I want to bring @Tricia question posted 12 days ago to the top of the list. Tricia asks the following… can anyone help her?

“Is anyone using AI to automate contract reviews?  If so, I would appreciate hearing your experience!  Our legal and supply chain people want to look into this and are curious to hear what other utilities are doing in this area.”

    Thanks so much!

I think it is important to remember that the act of nominating someone for an award is extremely powerful. Nominating an individual or a team for an award is a true act of recognizing that person’s or team’s efforts and hard work, and a wonderful way to celebrate achievement. So, get out there and nominate someone today for the BEST UTILITY ANALYTICS PROFESSIONAL!

This award recognizes the utility analytics industry’s top professional who possess the knowledge, skills, experience, passion, and business acumen required to provide consistent, quality, and innovative effort that is directly relevant to the utility analytics industry. The ideal candidates have a positive attitude, demonstrate a commitment to excellence, and consistently exceed performance objectives. The best utility analytics professional need not be code jockeys nor ninja warriors (though they may be both) but must be highly skilled at critical thinking and have extremely good intuition. Candidates can be managers, team leaders, data scientists, or analysts, as well as analytics champions for the utility industry. Nominees will be judged on key qualities and characteristics, including:

    • Possessing the knowledge, skills, experience, passion, and business acumen required to provide consistent, quality, and innovative effort that is directly relevant to the utility analytics industry
    • Problem-solving, critical-thinking skills
    • Consistency and quality for innovative efforts and exceeding performance objectives

NOMINATION QUESTIONS (review official questions in the nomination form):

    1. Describe the nominee’s role in your organization, including how long they’ve been with the organization.
    2. Explain why you’re nominating this individual.
    3. Provide either an example of excellent innovation provided by the nominee as it relates to utility analytics OR an example of how the nominee solved business problems using analytics.
    4. Provide examples of the nominee’s drive or motivation to perform at a high level.
    5. Provide examples of the critical thinking skills and intuition aptitude the nominee brings to your team.
    6. Supporting Documentation: Upload any documentation (metrics, testimonials, etc.) that you feel would support this nomination. (not required)

We can’t wait to see who is nominated for this award!

Learn more, submit your nominations, and browse our award pages at utilityanalytics.com/awards.

    Thanks!

    Hello UAI Members,

Just over one week ago UAI launched our Excellence Awards. We could not be more excited to host this program as a way to honor the professionals, teams, and organizations within the utility analytics profession, recognizing those that have achieved and maintained the highest standards of excellence through innovation.

Each week, between now and our awards submission deadline of July 15, 2020, I will reply to this post in UAI Connect to either feature one of our awards, or share information to help you understand why entering the awards is valuable, as well as tips and tricks for your submissions.

    WHY ENTER?

    • Raise your profile. Across all sizes and types of organizations, award winners and finalists benefit from industry exposure through a coordinated PR campaign and exposure to some of the most influential people in the profession. Our program offers unique PR and marketing collateral through articles and interviews and featured in our newsletter and on UAI Connect.
    • Measure your performance. By entering, you will be able to gauge how your organization, utility analytics team, and professionals compare against the very best.
    • Acknowledge your team’s efforts. In the new energy economy of utility analytics, achievements are easy to overlook. The process of completing the entry form allows you to pause and consider what (and who) contributed to your success and where you can go from here. Bonus: finalists are strongly encouraged to attend the awards ceremony and celebrate success with their team!
    • Impress your leadership. Your leadership wants to leverage and promote a winning team and company, and reputation is often a factor in gaining approval for new and exciting projects. Show your leadership that you are part of a winning team, one that has won an award for excellence in innovation.
    • Retain existing employees. Winning awards can improve employee morale, too. When employees are proud of their team, organization, or company’s achievements, they have an excuse to brag to their friends and family.
    • Attract new employees. Awards can help you attract the best new employees. People are drawn to award-winning businesses because they want to work for successful companies. In today’s experience economy, potential employees are looking at awards and company rankings to make career decisions.
    • Celebrate your achievements as a team. Celebrate your team’s success by attending the awards ceremony at UA Week. Each finalist receives one complimentary pass for the event and a discount code to help you bring even more team members!

    Hi Ben,

I noticed that you have yet to receive a response to your question about “Flood Management/Prediction”. I am replying to your post to bring it up to the top of the discussion forum again in hopes another UAI member will have some insight they can share with you on the topic.

Ben’s original question, just in case you missed it: “Anyone have experience/ insight into automated flood warning systems or wet infrastructure business analytics?  Deltares, DHI, Innovyze are the few market players in the specific area. We are looking to hear about experience in this market space.

Thanks so much for posting your question, Ben! Thanks in advance to other UAI members that may have insight to share.

    Cheers,

         Leslie

    Hi Pat,

I definitely like the question and we will switch it up to more important questions in the near future. We want to get members used to the poll, help them understand where it will live on the UAI Connect site, and to understand that it will change regularly. We thought offering a little bit of fun with the poll to start would help this process. :-)

We do have a survey out right now to gather meeting technology information. Please take the meeting technology survey here: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/5ZQZ8J2.

    Enjoy your weekend!

    Thanks!

    Hi Garr,

Can you try to view the poll again, please? I think we fixed it and you should be able to take the poll now. Let me know either way, so I can be 100% sure we fixed the issue. This should be a fun Friday activity.

    Thanks so much!

    Hi Blake,

The poll is on the  “Ask your Network” homepage here. If you are reviewing the page from a desktop, it will be on the top right. If you are reviewing the page from a mobile device, it will be in about the middle of the page, so you will need to scroll down a bit. The new weekly poll is meant to be a fun/friendly poll to help us all stay connected and positive. I hope you enjoy it.

    Thanks!

    Hi Everyone!
I am Garr Williams and work as the Manager of Data and Analytics in the Strategy team at Orlando Utilities Commission.  I am new-er to OUC and to utilities in general – 1.5 years.  I am a recovering management consultant where I specialized in Data Analytics, Org Change Mgt, and Complex Project Mgt for over 15 years.

I lead the Data and Analytics Center of Excellence at OUC made up of 50+ executives, directors, managers, and analysts.  Our focus is standing up (and getting adoption to) analytics governance practices.  (It is a great group of people!)

We have been in Orlando for over 20 years, and surprisingly, only go to the theme parks a couple of times a year.

I earned my undergrad and grad degrees from Georgia Southern University (Go Eagles – True Blue!)

    Best,
    Garr

    Hello UAI Members,

I’m excited to try something new on UAI’s Member-Only Community. I want to not only make this forum a place for work and professional connections to take place on a daily basis, a place to ask each other questions, find answers and exchange knowledge and share information, I want to make it a fun environment to help us all de-stress, get to know each other a little better, and build bonds and friendships of a lifetime.

One of the coolest things about the UAI community is seeing members make connections with one another-it’s incredible to watch personal and professional relationship and friendships begin, grow, evolve, and last. The more relationships that are built between us and the more we get to know each other, the more valuable our work exchanges will become. We open up, we share more, we learn more and we all become so much better together!

Our community gets bigger every day. Many of you already know one another, while others are brand-new faces. I feel like it’s time that we (both new members and established ones) take a little time to introduce ourselves.

    • Share your name
    • Where you’re from
    • How long you’ve worked in utility analytics
    • I also encourage you to share non-invasive personal tidbits about yourself, i.e. what you like to do for fun, your hobbies, your pet peeves, or even your favorite memes, of course keeping it in good taste. Share things that will help us all get to know you better

I think it is important to have a little fun while we work and enjoy each other’s company. Please, use the UAI Member-Only Community as a place to work hard and play hard, enjoy, laugh, and have some fun.

I’ll kick us off, and please know you can include as much or little detail in your introduction. I’m wordy, so I went all out:

I’m Leslie, UAI’s membership & digital engagement manager. I’ve been with UAI for almost five months and I’m passionate about connecting members who share similar interests and challenges, and providing them with benefits, experiences, and tools they need to solve their problems and improve their organizations. I enthusiastically joined UAI to help improve and evolve the UAI membership value, as well as manage UAI’s collection of Communities. I am a strategic program director, dynamic business leader, and expert facilitator with over 20 years of experience. To learn even more about my professional work or to connect with me, visit my profile on UAI’s member-only site or LinkedIn. Please reach out to me directly at any time if you have questions or need anything from UAI. I can be reached at lcook@endeavorb2b.com or 646-693-5965.

I’m a Texas girl at heart, born and raised in a small town in north Texas, and then I headed out west to graduate from Texas Tech University (Go Red Raiders!). After school I moved to Colorado and I’ve lived all along the front range for the last 22 years, settling in Denver for the last six years, and I still have a Texas accent (You can take the girl out of Texas, but you can’t take the Texas accent out of the girl!). I’ve been married to my best friend from high school for 17 years, and we have two amazingly intelligent miniature Australian Shepherds, Indio and Charley, who keep us busy.

When I’m not working, I can be found traveling the world. We have been to 11 countries so far and we hope to continue to expand our adventures. I also like to leverage my high attention to detail and project management skills when dabbling in home remodeling and interior design. I come up with crazy design schemes and my patient husband implements my ideas, doing all the skilled and hard labor work. We are now close to the end of a complete remodel of our 1952 house. I cannot wait to be done with this project that has taken us about three years to complete…I can almost see the light!

I am truly excited to get to know ALL UAI’s members, so please reply to this discussion post to introduce yourself. Give a little of yourself and you will be surprised at how much you get in return through your valuable, purpose-built relationships via UAI.

Like I said, I have only been with UAI for about five months, but I’m already having so much fun and learning a lot from all of you! We have a lot of positive updates coming soon and we are evolving, with your input, to better meet your needs and goals, and I can’t wait to share these things with you. You must stay tuned into UAI’s Member-Only Community to learn more within the next few months. We will also be announcing some new things and some updates during the unique and exciting event we have coming in June 2020, UA Summit Reimagined!

Introduce yourself, learn more about others, and connect through UAI!

    Stay safe and healthy,

         Leslie

  • Thanks Martin! I will share the results in a few days.

I’ll be honest… I LOVE Zoom! I understand the concern from organizations regarding the security and privacy issues that took place right at the start of the pandemic. With safety at top of mind, organizations acted quickly and banned or restricted (browser only) the use of Zoom. We have made our own adjustments here at UAI to protect our/your use of it. I have been keeping up to date with our IT team on Zoom’s response to these issues. The following was shared with me from IT. I sure hope it is not too late for Zoom! I hope they can rebound! I’m a fan!

“Zoom has been moving fast on the security issues that have been reported. Besides the items noted below, they are releasing v5, which revolves around security. Here are the details:

    • On May 30th, 2020, Zoom will enable GCM encryption across the entire Zoom platform, providing increased protection for meeting data. After May 30, 2020, all Zoom clients on older versions will receive a forced upgrade when trying to join meetings as GCM Encryption will be fully enabled across the Zoom platform. Please begin updating all your clients to Zoom 5.0 now. Zoom admins, visit our 5.0 IT administrator page for more detailed instructions on updating your endpoints to ensure they will be able to support GCM encryption once we cut over on May 30.
    • Report a User Feature: Meeting hosts and co-hosts can report a user in their meeting who is misusing the Zoom platform. Found in the Security icon, the option sends a report to Zoom’s Trust & Safety team for review. The report can include a specific offense, description, and optional screenshot. The Report a User function is on by default but can be turned off at the account, group, and user level in the Zoom web portal.
    • Leaving/Ending Meeting Enhancements: With this new UI update, hosts can clearly decide between ending or leaving a meeting. If the host leaves, they can now easily select a new host and have the confidence that the right person is left with host privileges. The host will now be required to assign a new host when leaving the meeting. Additionally, the pop-up message asking if the host would like to leave or end the meeting will now be displayed by the Leave button.
    • Setting to Allow Sharing of Cloud Recordings: Account owners and admins can enable or disable shared cloud recordings to prevent users from sharing their cloud recordings. This setting is available for individual recordings and at the account, group, and user level and can be locked at the group or account level.
    • Add Expiration Date for Shared Cloud Recordings: Users can now choose to expire the link for a cloud recording after a set number of days or on a custom date. This setting is available for individual recordings and at the account, group, and user level and can be locked at the group or account level.
    • Minimum Password Length of 6 Characters for Meeting and Shared Recording Passwords: The minimum password length for both meeting and shared recording passwords will now be 6 characters.
    • Profile Picture Control: Account admins and hosts can disable the ability for participants to show their profile picture and also prevent them from changing it in a meeting.
    • Show the Connected Data Center: Users can see which data center they are connected to by clicking on by clicking on the info icon at the top left of the client window.
    • Select Data Center Regions when Scheduling a Meeting: Users can now select which data center regions they would like their in meeting traffic to use when scheduling a meeting.
    • [Breaking API Changes] New Password Requirements: This new setting allows account owners and admins to set meeting password and recording password requirements (on the account settings page).”

Subject: Your Invited to a Series of UAI Real-Talk Roundtables on COVID-19

    Hello UAI Members,

You told UAI that you desire to hold collaborative, candid discussions with fellow members regarding the COVID-19 pandemic to help you gain a better understanding of how each of your organizations are dealing with the situation. UAI is delighted to bring you together during special member-exclusive Real-Talk Roundtables.

Learn more information about the Real-Talk Roundtables below and register today to attend these timely events!
In regard to these roundtables, some members said they want to maintain a strategic focus while other members want to get a little more granular during the discussion. After asking our members to submit questions on topics they want to discuss, we actually scheduled three different virtual Real-Talk Roundtables. Each virtual roundtable will be scheduled for 1-hour. Join us for one or all three of these interactive discussions to ask questions and get answers from partnered collaboration between UAI members. During each of these roundtables, we will start with the questions recorded below, each of which were submitted in advance by UAI members. We will then move on to your real-time questions, so be prepared to bring your questions to the table during these collaborative sessions.

What to expect during Real-Talk Roundtables?
Engage in lively discussions, exchange knowledge, share information, learn with each other and help one another move forward during these unprecedented times brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic. During Real-Talk Roundtables, we encourage you to get to know one another, turn on your video, and truly engage in the conversation (video not required, but encouraged). The more you put into the discussion, the more you will get out of it. We look forward to “seeing” you online soon!

    Real-Talk Roundtable: A Strategic Focus on COVID-19
    Thursday, May 14 at 10:00 am MT (9am PT / 11am CT / 12pm ET)
    PRE-REGISTER TODAY!

    • What information is helpful for leadership at your organization to view or monitor as we begin talking about returning to work? Do you have any examples of how you are providing this information you could share? What are some strategic questions that leadership are asking you in regards to analytics related to COVID-19?
    • What is your organization doing analytically in response to the COVID-19 pandemic?
    • How is the COVID-19 pandemic affecting certain types of utilities?
    • Do you plan to develop strategies for regulatory recovery – meaning building the case for rate increases to cover the impacts of these changes?
    • How has Covid-19 affected development projects? Has your company circled the wagons and are just keeping the lights on? Have projects been put on hold and/or is money/resources being reallocated?

Real-Talk Roundtable: A Focus on Load Forecasting for COVID-19

    Friday, May 15 at 10:00 am MT (9am PT / 11am CT / 12pm ET)
    PRE-REGISTER TODAY!

    • What are your challenges with load forecasting and workforce optimization. The load and the workforce both “look” different in the current environment; so it would be interesting to see how utility leaders are managing this change and, where applicable, applying analytics to get ahead of these challenges.
    • In regard to Corporate Energy Forecasting (CEF), where have you been able to use real-time AMI data to study how energy usage has changed and create forecasts of what things might look like as the community at large transitions back to work?
    • How has your utility adjusted its short-term and long-term load forecasts to account for a stay-at-home order and/or economic recession?
    • Impacts on Forecasting:
    • How are load forecasts being adjusted for the impacts of COVID-19 given the fact that there is very limited data available – are you waiting for more data, or are you making assumptions based on current knowledge?
    • What sort of assumptions are you making regarding the persistence of COVID-19 impacts – are you assuming a “new normal”, meaning that you expect permanent changes to your load; or do you expect that load should “revert to the mean” after 2, 3, 5, years?
    • Do you expect revenue to be a direct function of loads, or are you factoring in greater defaults/deferrals as a result of large portions of the economy potentially facing financial hardship or, even, bankruptcy?
    • Do you plan to develop strategies for regulatory recovery – meaning building the case for rate increases to cover the impacts of these changes?

    Real-Talk Roundtable: A Granular Focus on COVID-19

    Monday, May, 18 at 12:00 pm MT (11am PT / 1pm CT / 2pm ET)
    PRE-REGISTER TODAY!

    • What data modeling are you doing for COVID-19 analytics?
    • Will this event result in expansion of your resiliency team?
    • What system or service-class load impacts are utilities seeing under stay-at-home orders?
    • How have these impacts changed with changes in the weather?
    • For utilities, who has suspended disconnections for non-payment? How have you adjusted your revenue forecasts to account for arrears?
    • What use cases can you share in regard to your load analytics, payment analytics and workforce planning in regard to COVID-19?
    • Has your company developed any specific dashboards, reporting, or predictive analytics related to COVID-19?
    • Questions not specifically related to analytics, but still questions that members want to discuss with other members:
    • What will be the residual effects of the COVID-19 work at home environment?  More people will be working from home permanently? Will your company have people working from home once a week, twice a week?
    • With much of our workforce now tele-working, how is the reliability (or lack thereof) of your various interconnection technologies, such as WebEx, Zoom, Slack, etc.?
    • In addition to those third party technologies, we are also very reliant on our own corporate networks to be able to access our work-related files and communicate with our colleagues. While I have experienced very little in the way of issues personally, I know that has not been the case for some of my colleagues. So, my question for the group is, what steps, if any, are your firms taking (or investments that you are making) to either improve these technologies, or to provide additional alternative technologies, so that if one tech fails, your associates have the option to use a different solution?

We look forward to seeing you online soon for UAI Real-Talk Roundtables!

    Thanks!

    Subject: Member Spotlight: Ben Ettlinger

Ben Ettlinger is an active UAI member and provides outstanding influence and contributions to the UAI community through his high-level of engagement on UAI Connect and his active involvement in the monthly UAI Community Conversations. As thanks, we are featuring Ben in the very first UAI Member Spotlight. The UAI Member Spotlight is a new monthly feature on UAI Connect. Our Member Spotlight will feature a UAI member each month; either an individual member for his/her level of engagement, influence, and contribution to the UAI community or a UAI Utility Member organization for something outstanding they have accomplished.

Ben has been in the utility industry for close to 30 years and mostly in data related capacities.

Kevin: How did you get into the utility analytics industry?
Ben: My tenure at NYPA has been data centric since I joined. I began as a data modeler and designed relational databases for many years, eventually combining that with data administration, and then from there, since my concentration was data, I moved on to manage a major billing conversion data project into SAP BW. This, in turn, lead me to managing the SAP BW environment. From there, I moved on to manage numerous other data related efforts. When the idea of data analytics emerged, I got the nod to begin creating a Digital Analytics Group.

Kevin: What project have you enjoyed working on most in your career?
Ben: I found the greatest satisfaction in successfully building and managing the analytics group. At the time it was challenging, new, innovative, scientific, allowed me to leverage the years-long accumulate knowledge of utility industry data and finally an opportunity to appreciate mathematics, which was not my favorite subject in school.

Kevin: What has been your biggest professional challenge and how did you work through it?
Ben: In analytics, the biggest challenge was hiring data scientists who would have the background and correct fit to support our analytics needs, and within the financial resources made available to us. We were successful though, with plain old put the rubber to the road, searching through scores and scores of resumes. Even with job service companies who use their own analytics, it was quite a challenge, but thankfully we were successful in finding what we were looking for.

Kevin: If you could go back in time and give yourself one piece of advice before entering the utility analytics industry, what would it be?
Ben: Understand the complexity of analytics, the challenges in finding qualified personnel, the challenges to introduce the business to the power of analytics and, getting on your soap box to preach the power of analytics and what it can achieve.

Kevin: What would you like to talk to fellow colleagues and members about in UAI Connect? Or, what issues or topics would you like to see more discussions on in UAI Connect?
Ben: Three things; use cases, use cases use cases. Three more things, technology, technology and more technology. I’m not asking to share your secret algorithms, although I will not stop you. We are always looking for innovative analytics and technology ideas that we can apply to our own situation, especially in this Covid-19 environment. Just this morning, I discovered a new air purifying device designed for Covid and a project to determine if Covid spread via sewage waste analysis. We also want to hear about what utilities are doing in terms of predictive and prescriptive analytics or edge devices with regard to river ice prediction, transmission and generation asset health, flood prediction, any other emerging technology both hardware and software that will enhance the utility business.

Kevin: Thank you so much for sharing with us and for being a highly engaged member of UAI!

Hello – I work for an electric utility in Kansas. I’m trying to understand the difference between FRAM and SPIA for ice modeling. Do you know what the advantages are of either model? Specifically, we’re worried about better understanding how ice impacts our electrical distribution lines during inclement weather. If you even can just point me to a place I can learn more about FRAM and SPIA, that’s fine too.  I can read!
