Subject: A Call for Community Sponsors & Leaders – NEW UAI CommunitiesHello UAI Members,
We are excited to launch four NEW UAI Communities! The goal is to hold our first meetings for these brand new Communities this Summer, 2020. But first, we need to recruit volunteer Community Sponsors and Community Leaders for each new UAI Community.
This is your call to be a Community Sponsor or Community Leader! Please volunteers by Friday, April 10, 2020.
What are the four NEW UAI Communities?- Asset Health Analytics Community
- Customer Analytics Community
- Disaster Analytics Community
- Grid Analytics Community
Of course, this is in addition to our current collection of UAI Communities, so by the end of this Summer we will have a total of nine (9) UAI Communities!
What is the role of the Community Sponsors and Community Leaders?
- Please review the attached PDF document for role descriptions and time commitments
What does UAI need from you regarding these new UAI Communities?
- Volunteer as a Community Sponsor for one of our new UAI Communities — ideally director level+ or EAC member
- Learn more by reviewing the attachment
- We would like to recruit at least two (2) Community Sponsors for each new UAI Community. However, we will take more volunteers – the more brains working together, the better
- Volunteer for a Community Leader for one of our new UAI Communities — typically managers/analytics from various business functions
- Learn more by reviewing the attachment
- We would like to recruit at least four (4) Community Leaders for each new UAI Community. Again, we will take more volunteers – the more the merrier!
How do I submit to volunteer?
- Please click on the following link, which will take you to a Google sheet, and fill in the information requested for both Community Sponsors and Community Leaders for each new UAI Community.
- Here’s the link: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/17cYQFHb7BvluMJMxpRt_eLGAzVC53U122EoLT_iY2x0/edit?usp=sharing
Next Steps:
- Once Community Sponsors and Community Leaders are recruited, we will reach out to gather the leadership team for each new UAI Community to start working on the Community Charter
- Once the Charter for the Community is created, we will schedule the first Community meeting for that new UAI Community
Thank you all so much for your time and commitment to this effort. We are extremely excited to get these new UAI Communities started and provide you and all our members with additional value.
If you have any questions, please reach out to me at lcook@endeavorb2b.com or 646-693-5965.
Thanks!

MemberApril 8, 2020 at 10:52 am in reply to: Request to Complete Survey – Getting to Know Natural Gas Analytics CommunityHello Natural Gas Analytics Community Members,
Thanks so much to those that have completed the survey!
We have received a total of 12 responses as of today. We have a total of 108 members in the Natural Gas Analytics Community, so we hope to receive at least a 30% response rate from you, which would be about 32 responses (a good sample size). We are only 20 responses away…we got this! :-)
If you have not completed the survey, please do so as soon as possible. It is a quick survey with an average response time of 5 minutes. If you don’t know an answer to a question, you can leave it blank or insert N/A. You are not required to answer all questions. With that said, please answer as many questions as possible.
Your responses are important to the future success of this community and will help the leadership team drive value that is designed to meet your needs, address your current challenges and align with what is most important to you.
Thank you all so much! Enjoy the rest of your week and please take the survey today!
Stay safe and well!

Hello Michael,I apologize for the confusion. The new date for UA Summit Reimagined is June 9-11, 2020 and is taking place 100% online. I have advised my team of the confusion and we will make sure all dates have been updated to June 9-11, 2020. Thank you for bringing this to my attention.Sincerely,Leslie CookGet Outlook for iOS

Leslie,
The email that was sent out informing everyone of the change had the previous date of April 15-17. However, when I went to register it showed the updated date for June. This was quite confusing to me so I am confident that others may have been confused on when this was actually going to occur.Michael Fry

Thank you, @Jennifer and @Jim, for introducing yourself! I absolutely love reading new introductions from members every day on this Introduce Yourself thread. It is great to understand the many different roles within our membership and within utility companies that are interested in and use analytics to drive business decision or to combine the science of data with the art of marketing, etc.
Keep your intros coming! I look forward to reading even more this week.
Thanks to you all! Stay safe and well.
Cheers,
Leslie

Subject: Introduce YourselfMorning everyone,
I believe I am one of the few “regulatory” folks on this community of practice. My name is Jim Woodward and I have been a regulatory analyst with the Washington Utilities & Transportation Commission (WA-UTC) for a little over a year. At the WA-UTC my focus has been on conservation & energy planning. This natural gas community has decided relevance for me as I am also the staff POC for one of the gas utilities regulated within the State of WA. Prior to joining the Commission, I was a project manager with the U.S. Dept of Energy’s Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) for 5 years. Moving from Eastern to Western WA has afforded my family of 5 decidedly more rainy days but also a host of beautiful Pacific NW parks and scenery to explore. That is, when we’re not sheltering in place!
I look forward getting to know others within this community.
Cheers,
Jim Woodward

Subject: Introduce YourselfHello Everyone,
I am Mike Risner at the Utility Analytics Institute. I have been with UAI since about its inception in 2013. Prior to UAI I worked for about 10 years in the utility industry. My good fortune is that my work is in showing the terrific people in our community the value UAI can provide and helping them to realize that value as members. Other roles have been with Intel, AT&T, and Prosavvy.
I am originally from and still reside in Phoenix, AZ. When I am not working or self-isolating I enjoy hiking, painting, chess, working on my home, and spending time with family.
I feel very fortunate to be a part of the amazing community that is UAI and look forward to getting to know you all a bit better.
All the best,
Mike

Subject: Introduce YourselfHello UAI Members,
I’m excited to try something new on UAI’s Member-Only Community. I want to not only make this forum a place for work and professional connections to take place on a daily basis, a place to ask each other questions, find answers and exchange knowledge and share information, I want to make it a fun environment to help us all de-stress, get to know each other a little better, and build bonds and friendships of a lifetime.
One of the coolest things about the UAI community is seeing members make connections with one another-it’s incredible to watch personal and professional relationship and friendships begin, grow, evolve, and last. The more relationships that are built between us and the more we get to know each other, the more valuable our work exchanges will become. We open up, we share more, we learn more and we all become so much better together!
Our community gets bigger every day. Many of you already know one another, while others are brand-new faces. I feel like it’s time that we (both new members and established ones) take a little time to introduce ourselves.
- Share your name
- Where you’re from
- How long you’ve worked in utility analytics
- I also encourage you to share non-invasive personal tidbits about yourself, i.e. what you like to do for fun, your hobbies, your pet peeves, or even your favorite memes, of course keeping it in good taste. Share things that will help us all get to know you better
I think it is important to have a little fun while we work and enjoy each other’s company. Please, use the UAI Member-Only Community as a place to work hard and play hard, enjoy, laugh, and have some fun.
I’ll kick us off, and please know you can include as much or little detail in your introduction. I’m wordy, so I went all out:
I’m Leslie, UAI’s membership & digital engagement manager. I’ve been with UAI for almost five months and I’m passionate about connecting members who share similar interests and challenges, and providing them with benefits, experiences, and tools they need to solve their problems and improve their organizations. I enthusiastically joined UAI to help improve and evolve the UAI membership value, as well as manage UAI’s collection of Communities. I am a strategic program director, dynamic business leader, and expert facilitator with over 20 years of experience. To learn even more about my professional work or to connect with me, visit my profile on UAI’s member-only site or LinkedIn. Please reach out to me directly at any time if you have questions or need anything from UAI. I can be reached at lcook@endeavorb2b.com or 646-693-5965.
I’m a Texas girl at heart, born and raised in a small town in north Texas, and then I headed out west to graduate from Texas Tech University (Go Red Raiders!). After school I moved to Colorado and I’ve lived all along the front range for the last 22 years, settling in Denver for the last six years, and I still have a Texas accent (You can take the girl out of Texas, but you can’t take the Texas accent out of the girl!). I’ve been married to my best friend from high school for 17 years, and we have two amazingly intelligent miniature Australian Shepherds, Indio and Charley, who keep us busy.
When I’m not working, I can be found traveling the world. We have been to 11 countries so far and we hope to continue to expand our adventures. I also like to leverage my high attention to detail and project management skills when dabbling in home remodeling and interior design. I come up with crazy design schemes and my patient husband implements my ideas, doing all the skilled and hard labor work. We are now close to the end of a complete remodel of our 1952 house. I cannot wait to be done with this project that has taken us about three years to complete…I can almost see the light!
I am truly excited to get to know ALL UAI’s members, so please reply to this discussion post to introduce yourself. Give a little of yourself and you will be surprised at how much you get in return through your valuable, purpose-built relationships via UAI.
Like I said, I have only been with UAI for about five months, but I’m already having so much fun and learning a lot from all of you! We have a lot of positive updates coming soon and we are evolving, with your input, to better meet your needs and goals, and I can’t wait to share these things with you. You must stay tuned into UAI’s Member-Only Community to learn more within the next few months. We will also be announcing some new things and some updates during the unique and exciting event we have coming in June 2020, UA Summit Reimagined!
Introduce yourself, learn more about others, and connect through UAI!
Stay safe and healthy,
Leslie

I hope we eventually get an introduction from every member or at least everyone will say “hello” via this thread. :-) I have big goals for collaboration and engagement for this community.
I loved your creative message about NBU and your references to being a 3-year old as it relates to your department. I got quite the chuckle out of your statement about sticking your finger in the light socket… such a funny visual as it relates to electric utilities.
Also, I know I’ve told you this before, but I must say it again… I LOVE the New Braunfels, TX area. So beautiful! It is such a lovely area in the perfect location.
Thanks again and cheers to you!

My name is Claude Godin and I am a Senior Principal with DNV GL in the Key Initiatives (KI) Department. KI roughly translates to being a plane most of the time doing interesting projects around the world, albeit my wings have been clipped due to the Covid virus.I got my start in utility analytics during my 24 year stint at Manitoba Hydro where I was part of a team that modeled river systems for hydraulic operations. Following that, I was charged with building a a new Load Research Department from the ground up where we were one of the first utilities to use new digital (recorders under glass) meters capable of collecting load profile data we required to model our rate classes and new load forecasts. After that, I followed deregulation around the world designing and implementing load settlement systems for market operations working for a major meter/meter reading company. Once deregulation petered out and Advanced Metering metering came into play, I built up EnergyICT’s North America operations until we sold the company to Elster in 2009 (implemented some of the worlds largest MDMs. Once the buyout was completed in 2012, and too young to retire, I decided to join some old load research colleagues at DNV GL/KEMA/RLW to work in a team that have made careers of data analytics. Besides doing some real interesting large scale analytics projects around the world, we are also helping our clients with making use of all the data available today, both in handling scale as well as linking all the disparate sources together.

Hi Mary,
Thanks for reaching out. It is good to hear from a fellow Coloradoan. I hope you are safe and doing well.
I did check your subscription to the UAI open community and you are set to receive “no email” from that community discussion forum.
I would like to propose an idea to you. Instead of completely unsubscribing from the UAI online member-only open community, so you don’t miss valuable questions and comments from other UAI members, you might consider changing your “community notifications”. You can change your notifications to a couple of options: “real time” or “daily digest”. The daily digest only sends you one email per day with all conversations that take place within the open community. If you are set-up with real time communications, you will get an email every single time someone asks a question or when others reply to questions.
If you want to change your community notifications, you can go to your profile, click on “My Account”, scroll down and click on “Community Notifications”. Once within Community Notifications, scroll down to “Open Community” and click the green box to the right of it and select “Daily Digest”. This will help control the amount of email you get from the open community.
If you would like to get on the phone with me, I am very happy to help you with this action and/or provide you with a demo of the entire site and all the neat features it offers. You can really customize it to use it the way that works best for you.
Let me know if you have any questions.
Thank you!
Leslie

Subject: Introduce YourselfHello All,
I am Ron Capute and I work as an Agile Leader for the FPL division of NextEra Energy. My teams develop software and analytics for the distribution side of the business. I have worked at NextEra for six years. I have worked in IT my whole career, starting out as a developer and moved into project management about 15 years ago.
I’ve lived in Florida for most of my life and I think I’m here to stay. My wife is a school teacher and both our son and daughter are in college now. I love college football and outdoor activities, especially being in or on the water. I am a musician and play trombone in a local community band. Also I like to play bass guitar, but I’m still learning. Barbeque food is my favorite, and I love to get out my smoker and spend long hours cooking all sorts of things. I have two dogs and that helps keep the house active while being empty nesters.
I’m interested in learning more about image recognition and machine learning as we are using these technologies to help prevent outages. I hope to learn about what everyone else in UAI is doing!

Stay safe and healthy,
Leslie

Thanks so much for introducing yourself, @Sandi! You are not late to the party! I welcome any and all responses at any time whether it is today, tomorrow, next week, next month or later.

Subject: Introduce YourselfHello Everyone! I hope this note finds you all happy and healthy. (Sorry this is so late, Leslie!)
I’m Sandi Joralemon from New Braunfels Utilities in the AWESOME state of TEXAS. New Braunfels sits almost half way between San Antonio and Austin. We can eat fantastic authentic Mexican food on the Riverwalk and take a relatively short drive to enjoy the weird Austin vibe and funky music. Willie Nelson still plays nearby.
I’ve been in the utility industry a whopping 3 years and it’s never boring. I may have learned more in these last 3 years than I did in the prior decade. I can throw around the word “decade” easily because I’m old. We are writing our own analytics story at NBU; it’s a combination of self-help, drama, suspense, and comedy. We’ve learned a lot of lessons from people we’ve been in touch with at UAI and other organizations, but as with most 3 year olds, our department has had to learn some things by sticking our own finger in the light socket. Thankfully, that lesson is quickly learned.
I am thrilled to be involved with Utility Analytics Institute. We have so much to do, which is a great spot to be in!

Thanks so much for introducing yourself, @Ron! It is a pleasure to virtually meet you. I like that you included an item that you are interested in learning from other UAI members… great idea!
Who’s your favorite college football team?
A BBQ on the beach in Florida sounds really good about now, especially in light of being in “Stay at Home” mode.
Stay well!

Thanks so much for jumping in to introduce yourself, Eric! It has already been a pleasure working with you as a leader of the re-launched UAI Natural Gas Analytics Community. I look forward to our continued collaboration on that front.
It is great to see you as a “new guy” in the utility industry. I am in that arena, too, and look forward to learning from you and others in this community.
It is also nice to meeting another world traveler. I look forward to trading stories.
I am so happy to see all of your introductions. Keep them rolling in! We have well over 2000 individual members, so I look forward to seeing all your introductions. Big goals!
Thanks!
Leslie

Hi, everyone –
I’m Eric at Madison Gas & Electric Company in Madison, WI. I work in Gas Planning and we serve approximately 168k natural gas customers.
I started my career at the LDC in Chicago and worked there for 6 years, but recently moved to Madison 3 years ago. I’ve been working on the analytics side of things for only a short time now compared to most (approx. 5 years). In the grand scheme of things, I’m a “new guy” to most in the utility industry, but I do see a growing number of younger people coming on board (and desiring data-based decision making)!
Personally, my wife and I are big foodies that enjoy world travel and all that goes with it (meeting new people, experiencing new cultures, and getting out of one’s comfort zone). I’m active in the local intramural sports leagues and enjoy getting out and doing anything from biking & marathons to local beer tasting & searching for the best street tacos. I also enjoy a good sit-down session with friends to play some old school video games, and recently, VR. If anyone ever finds themselves in Madison, let me know and I’ll give you a tour!
Looking forward to meeting you all!

Hi everyone
I am Catherine McCowan at Enbridge. I work in Gas Distribution and we serve most of the customers in Ontario, Canada – about 3.7M
I started my career with British Gas in London and Newcastle-upon-Tyne before moving to Enbridge in 1993. I have been in the Toronto area since then with a brief career break to run a comic book and toy store with my husband. Although I loved spending more time in our community we learned that we are not retailers. We were both relieved to be able to return to our desk jobs after this adventure.
We have 3 kids, 5 cats, a dog and a bearded dragon.
I grew up in Kingston Ontario and went to Queen’s University there. While I was living in the UK I got an MBA from University of Strathclyde and more recently completed my Masters of Engineering at Robert Gordon University – also in the UK.
Looking forward to meeting everyone.
Catherine

Thanks so much for taking the time to introduce yourself, Martin! I love seeing your posts. I am sure access to your sailboat right now would help with social distancing (I’m sure the below photo is what that social distancing might look like). Good luck on your next race! Stay well!
Thanks!

Hi I’m Martin from FortisBC.
I have worked for FortisBC for 12 years primarily in the IT Architecture and solutions space. Prior to this I ran a consulting company and worked for 23 companies on everything from business analysis and PM to development, analytics and staffing. Some you may know Molson Breweries (sales and marketing demographic analytics), West Coast Energy (wildcat drill result analytics). Over the last 4 years I have been involved in a grass roots build of an analytics team at FortisBC.
Personally:
I moved from the UK in 1982 when I was 13 (you can do the math) so I am more Canadian than British. But I still uphold Tea Time. I have a wife and 2 kids, love to sail, surf, swim, hike, scuba, climb. I race weekly on a sailboat in Vancouver and recently bought my own cruising sailboat (it is moored in the US so I can’t use it until after COVID)
Nice to meet all of you and look forward to sharing with the group.
Martin
