  • I can’t wait to see this playlist! Two classic songs come to my mind, coincidentally both with a color theme.  :-)

    1.) Bing Crosby’s White Christmas: https://youtu.be/IOkyBqGw2Wg?t=9
    2.) Elvis Presley’s Blue Christmas: https://youtu.be/B6WnnZRSKYs?t=4

    Happy Holidays to all!

    Cheers!

Subject: UAI Holiday Playlist – Share Your Favorite Holiday Music and Earn Final Points for the 2022 Engagement Challenge!

    Greetings UAI Members!

I hope all is well! As we conclude the year, the UAI team wanted to send a huge THANK YOU to all of our members who helped make 2022 one of our best years to date. This year we welcomed in hundreds on new individual members and several new utility and solution provider teams, and by gaining new perspectives, we were able to discuss several exciting topics and explore new and innovative solutions. Thank you again to everyone who took time to get involved with us this year!

As I know everyone is getting ready (or already in!) full holiday mode, I figured you could help me with a fun project. For me, nothing screams “Holidays” more than great music and I’m looking to comprise the perfect end of the year playlist. Have a favorite holiday song? Maybe you just heard a brand new song this week? We want to hear from you in the comments section below!

To get us started I’m sharing a winter classic that’s a staple of our household:

Again please let us know your favorite holiday songs in the comments section below. I’m hoping everyone can learn one song they didn’t know previously and have some good new additions for their playlists. Getting involved in this post will also give you an additional opportunity to earn points in the 2022 UAI Connect Engagement Challenge which is closing Friday, December 16. If you have any questions on the UAI Connect Engagement Challenge or need a quick refresher on the rules, please reach out to me at kpraet@utilityanalytics.com or visit our original post HERE.

**Please note: Members who would like to stop receiving certain UAI notifications can adjust their settings through their Profile Page. From here, click into “My Account” and then “Community Notifications” where you can update your community notifications and email preferences.  For example, scroll down to “Ask Your Network” and select “Daily Digest” to get fewer emails than “Real Time”. If anyone is having trouble adjusting their settings please reach out to me at kpraet@utilityanalytics.com or by phone at 315-440-3033 so I can quickly assist.

Thanks again everyone and Happy Holidays!

Hello Everyone! El Paso Electric will be attending UA Week next week and we’re wondering if anyone has been successful in:

    • Capitalizing on-going cloud costs
    • Capitalizing in-house products based on using the code written as the asset

If anyone has any insight for us on these topics, please let us know if we can set aside a little bit of time next week to discuss.

    Thank you,

    Hello UAI Members,

We are just about one week away from the next event in our six-part series for the UAI and T&D World “Accelerated Learning Forum: Spatial Analytics for a Resilient Grid“.

REGISTER (Free for ALL Utility Personnel)

    Session Details:
Please make special note that this is a 90-minute session and takes place on Wednesday, September 21, 2022 at 3:00 – 4:30 PM CT (1:00 PM PT / 2:00 PM MT / 4:00 PM ET). The session will include engaging and interactive conversation.

You can get a little glimpse of what our speakers will talk about by watching some brief video clips from the first event in this series:

    Two-Part Session:
    PART 1:
    SPEAKER:
    Peter Armstrong, Representative, Waipa Networks
    SESSION DETAILS:
Adding Spatial Analytic Data to Asset Management
Waipa Network has used a LiDAR and high-resolution photo survey programme for an input to their new GIS and network model, foundational to their ADMS roadmap development. Waipa has built dashboards using PowerBI that have been constructed to report on defect numbers, clearance issues and pole lean data across the network and by feeder, to focus and understand the scale of network issues. Graphs of AHI network condition against equipment age profiles provide evidence for condition based replacement programmes and future expenditure profiling rather than age based replacement. Subsequent AHI inspection results will allow time-based trending of network condition, assisting further in the prediction of future renewal expenditure.

    PART 2:
SPEAKER: Brian Lafayette, Head of Business Strategy, Overstory
    SESSION DETAILS:
Using Spatial Analytics to Optimize Your O&M Program
Utility spend billions of dollars annual on vegetation management. Despite the staggering investment of member dollars in their O&M programs, though, many still rely on anecdotal data from work crews and paper processes to put that significant investment to work. However, innovative teams today are maximizing their budget by pivoting to spatial analytics for an objective overview of their networks, inviting data to the conversation, and prioritizing impactful work using satellite intelligence. In this session, we’ll share how teams can use spatial analytics to predict grow-in and climate hazards with risk-based prioritization. We’ll also cover how teams can use spatial analytics to get better contractor bids, maximize trimming budgets, and prioritize VM for specific business goals.

Subject: September (2022) Member Spotlight: Matt Wiseman (Duke Energy)

@Matthew is an active UAI member and provides outstanding influence and contributions to the UAI community through any of our multiple channels, including, but not limited to engagement on UAI Connect, volunteering with UAI, involvement and/or leadership in monthly Community Conversations, and/or speaking at UAI events, plus so much. As thanks, we are featuring him in the UAI Member Spotlight. Matt is a data scientist at Duke Energy working on a variety of AI and data science projects including computer vision and natural language processing.

Kevin: How did you get into the utility analytics industry?

Matt: I have worked as a data science consultant in different industries and came across a data science role at Duke Energy.  I have now been in the utility industry for 5 years and have come to appreciate the wide variety of data science opportunities from operations to finance to customer service.

Kevin: What project have you enjoyed working on most in your career?

Matt: I have loved working on a project called DERMS (distributed energy resource management systems) which provides data science models and a GUI for solar and battery site managers to monitor their sites’ performances. It is rewarding to help shift utilities to cleaner energy sources.

Kevin: What has been your biggest professional challenge and how did you work through it?

Matt: I came from an economics academic background which didn’t emphasis coding, so when I first started my data science career I was learning coding on the job. Solving real world problems was a great way to ramp up my skills faster than taking courses. Python coding has now become a favorite part of my day!

Kevin: If you could go back in time and give yourself one piece of advice before entering the utility analytics industry, what would it be?

Matt: Continue to learn about data science/AI, but also take time to learn about utilities and how different parts of the business work.  I think data scientists can be most impactful when they have not only data science expertise, but understand the industry they work in.

Kevin: What would you like to talk to fellow colleagues and members about in UAI Connect? Or, what issues or topics would you like to see more discussions on in UAI Connect?

Matt: Data is a common bottleneck for data science projects, so it would be great to collaborate with utilities sharing datasets.

Kevin: Thank you so much for sharing with us and for being a highly engaged member of UAI!

Do you have any final thoughts, ideas, or comments you would like to share with your fellow UAI members?

Matt: It is a cool opportunity to be in an industry where different companies in the same field aren’t competing and can collaborate with UAI!

    Hello Grid Analytics Community Members,

It looks like we made a mistake in reporting the September 21 Grid Analytics Community Conversation session. The session title that was listed on the previous message this morning is actually the session title for our October 18 session that takes place in-person at UA Week in San Diego. The correct session title for our September 21 Grid Analytics Community Conversation is as follows. You can also learn more about the session on our Events Calendar. Please let me know if you have any questions or need anything regarding this upcoming September Community Conversation. Thank you so much and I apologize for the confusion.

Cara Gilad, Sr. Data Scientist, Exelon Analytics

Jeffrey Swiatek, Principal Quant Engineer, PECO T&S Analytics

    PECO
Substation Transformer Preventative Maintenance Optimization using Machine Learning Presentation with Q&A/open discussion Join the Grid Analytics Community on Wednesday, September 21, 2022 at 1:00 PM CT for a presentation with Q&A and open discussion on “Substation Transformer Preventative Maintenance Optimization using Machine Learning” with @Cara, Sr. Data Scientist, Exelon Analytics and Jeffrey Swiatek, Principal Quant Engineer, PECO T&S Analytics.

Utilities have been heavily reliant on subject matter knowledge in the last century to drive PM program and schedule PM for a variety of assets. Our engineers are experts in the industry and have leveraged their and industry knowledge of asset measurements and inspection results to manage these programs, however, as human beings, we are limited in terms of considering a variety of factors and assessing the distribution of each factor. This is where data driven approaches shine and enables SMEs with checking million to billion combinations to come up with the best model to predict future. These models can then be used to supplement engineer knowledge, and support industry-wide acceptance of a systematic approach to transition to condition-based maintenance programs.

Latest model was validated against business-as-usual to provide 85% accuracy using success criteria developed for this project. PECO team is quantifying and confirming the benefits of model output to extract technical and data science success, including that model can be used in the real world “what would be do differently”

    Session Takeaways
     – Learn how Exelon and PECO T&S and Analytics teams have developed a novel machine learning model to recommend preventative maintenance (PM) for transformers at the right time to replace time-based preventative maintenance.
     – Learn about underlying on-premise and cloud analytics platform required to support this work, Exelon’s strong data-driven culture, focus on cross-collaboration and supporting diverse roles to work together to identify, ideate and solve problems.

    Thanks!

  • These are all GREAT! Thanks for submitting your ideas and memes. I can’t wait to see what goes on the t-shirt. Keep submitting your memes, ideas, or custom created art for the t-shirt until Friday, September 2, 2022. After September 2, the UAI team will narrow down the entries and we will post our favorites for our members to vote to select their #1 choice for the t-shirt design. Please note if the same meme is posted by multiple members, we will select the first person to post it as the entry, so act fast!

Once our winner is selected, we will make the big announcement on UAI Connect. Our winner will receive 10 free shirts, fame, glory, and absolute bragging rights, plus recognition at UA Week in San Diego.

And remember, you’ll have to attend UA Week 2022 in San Diego, CA on October 18-20 to actually get one of these t-shirts (limited quantities available) and/or a sticker with this design on it.

Have any questions? Reach out to @Kevin at kpraet@utilityanalytics.com or 315-440-3033.

    Thank you!

    Hello UAI Members,

Learn more about “The Business Case for Spatial Analytics“! Join us for our second virtual event in our series of six for the UAI and T&D World “Accelerated Learning Forum: Spatial Analytics for a Resilient Grid“. This virtual event takes place on August 24, 2022 at 3:00 PM CT (1:00 PM PT / 2:00 PM MT / 4:00 PM ET) and will include an engaging and interactive conversation.

REGISTER (Free for ALL Utility Personnel)

This presentation will outline The Lines Company’s key drivers for investing in a LiDAR survey for vegetation management and the arguments presented to support that decision. It will also discuss the conscious compromises made at the time to balance the huge potential of spatial analytics (the many applications of the data) with the relative business maturity at the time (constrained ability to extract that value). Finally, it will discuss how the LiDAR project became a trigger point for a broader business digitization and resource capability change program.

You will hear from Craig Hackett, Network Manager, The Lines Company.

Craig Hackett is Acting Network Manager for The Lines Company, a small electricity distributor in the North Island of New Zealand. Craig has worked in the electricity metering sector for 20 years, including for Landis and Gyr and Mercury, helping drive New Zealand’s transition to smart metering, and later moved to work in electricity distribution in 2015. His work with The Lines Company has focused on asset management and business change. Craig has been instrumental in reshaping the long-term investment program of The Lines Company which has resulted in an approximate doubling the capital expenditure relative to historic levels. He is now leading the companies first steps in its transformation to a digital utility.

Subject: UAI Connect Engagement Challenge Reminder + Share Your Favorite Pet Picture and Earn Points!

    Hello UAI Members,

I hope all is well! It’s been two weeks since we launched the 2022 UAI Connect Engagement Challenge and wanted to thank all of those that have taken time to get involved. This challenge is designed to help you maximize your experience on UAI Connect and make the most of the various resources that are available to you.

Just a quick reminder on the rules: The UAI Connect Engagement Challenge is open to all current UAI members (both utility and solution provider members) and is designed to help you maximize your engagement throughout UAI Connect. As part of this game, we provide clear direction on how to get more involved and how to make the most of your experience on UAI Connect. By getting more involved within UAI’s communities, discussions forums, and completing your profile on UAI Connect (just to name a few things), you will in turn gain more value from the network on UAI Connect, which includes some of the brightest and smartest minds within utility analytics. For a complete breakdown of how to earn points during this game and the scoring, please refer to our “UAI Connect Engagement Challenge Scoring Sheet” found in the Ask Your Network Library.

In addition to getting more active on Connect, we will be selecting three winners at the end of December (to be announced Wednesday, January 4, 2022) based off of their scoring. Please note our scoring will only include data between July 20 and December 16, 2022, and previous scores will not be included.

Just in case you’re still not excited, see what great prizes we have picked out for our winners!

To help you get started with some “easy points” I wanted to start a discussion thread below sharing pictures of our favorite pets! With many of us still working from home, our pets have become some of our best friends during the work day and often times make appearances on our various calls. Unfortunately, as many of you know, I can’t have pets in my current house but I’m happy to share a picture of my parent’s dog “Turbo” (who’s really my dog anyway).

Have a favorite pet picture? Share below!

Thanks again and best of luck in the 2022 UAI Connect Engagement Challenge!

  • Hi @Jason, Please know that you can update your communication notifications from UAI Connect. To do this, please go to your profile and click on “My Account“. You will then scroll down to “Community Notifications” and update the settings on any of the communities in your list to your preference. For example, scroll down to “Ask Your Network” and select “Daily Digest” to get fewer emails than “Real Time”. You can also check the box for “Consolidated Daily Digest” or “Consolidated Weekly Digest” to receive even fewer emails. I hope this helps! If you need help, please reach out to me directly at lcook@utilityanalytics.com or at 646-693-5965 and I would be happy to help you set-up your notifications.

    Thanks so much!

It has been fun (and a welcome distraction) to see all of the pictures and clever posts.  Here are my 3 (yes, 3 – long story): Sydney (Shih Zsu 16), Benny  (toy poodle mix rescue 7) and Cocoa Puff (mini Australian Labradoodle 7).  We thought rats were eating our tomatoes, but discovered little Benny was actually able to jump up on the raised bed! Sydney is the sweetest ever and there are no words for Cocoa Puff – she is hilarious and will go nowhere without her ball.  They are all my staff and hang out with me.  :)  My husband gets the cat.
