Subject: August (2022) Member Spotlight: Debra Henderson (Black & Veatch)@Debra is an active UAI member and provides outstanding influence and contributions to the UAI community through any of our multiple channels, including, but not limited to engagement on UAI Connect, volunteering with UAI, involvement and/or leadership in monthly Community Conversations, and/or speaking at UAI events, plus so much. As thanks, we are featuring her in the UAI Member Spotlight. Debra is an Electrical Engineer and has over 30 years of experience in different sectors of the utility industry mostly in T&D Planning and Operations. In addition, she has significant utility transmission and distribution experience from her 17 years at Pacific Gas & Electric at the beginning of her career.
Kevin: How did you get into the utility analytics industry?
Debra: I guess as an electrical engineer working with utilities you are always technically in the utility analytics industry. I discovered UAI at ABB when we were developing Asset Performance Management (APM) capabilities specifically for T&D. APM was widely used in generation, but APM for T&D required a completely different set of analytics where you didn’t have real-time data. I was fortunate to be involved with the evolution.
Kevin: What project have you enjoyed working on most in your career?
Debra: It is hard to pick a single project. I love working at Black & Veatch helping clients with their APM and Asset Investment Planning (AIP) journeys and helping them realize the benefits of asset analytics. I also enjoyed working on the APM solution that I mentioned and being part of leading edge of T&D analytics.
Kevin: What has been your biggest professional challenge and how did you work through it?
Debra: The biggest challenges with T&D analytics at utilities are historical data quantity, data quality and understanding the benefits of making data-informed decisions. The challenge for me is figuring out the best way to help utilities see the benefits and not get overwhelmed by the enormity of the data problem. Every client is different, but the 2 things that work the best are visualizations where they can see the new information and what it provides them and starting slow with one asset type to work through the data issues in small chunks.
Kevin: If you could go back in time and give yourself one piece of advice before entering the utility analytics industry, what would it be?
Debra: Be patient, pay more attention to the details and make it easier for people to adopt. There are AMI analytics we were working on at Itron in 2006 that utilities still haven’t adopted. Should be easier now with the new analytic tools.
Kevin: What would you like to talk to fellow colleagues and members about in UAI Connect? Or, what issues or topics would you like to see more discussions on in UAI Connect?
Debra: I am always interested in the ways utilities are solving the data problems and figuring out how to assess distribution asset performance. Every asset type is unique, but I think collectively we can figure it out.
Kevin: Thank you so much for sharing with us and for being a highly engaged member of UAI!
Do you have any final thoughts, ideas, or comments you would like to share with your fellow UAI members?
Debra: I appreciate the passion we all have for utility analytics. Passion is what drives progress and change. Big thank to UAI for bringing us together.

Subject: July (2022) Member Spotlight: Jordan Pino (Entergy)@Jordan is an active UAI member and provides outstanding influence and contributions to the UAI community through any of our multiple channels, including, but not limited to engagement on UAI Connect, volunteering with UAI, involvement and/or leadership in monthly Community Conversations, and/or speaking at UAI events, plus so much more. As thanks, we are featuring him in the UAI Member Spotlight. Jordan Pino is Manager – Data Science at Entergy where he manages a team of Data Scientists and contractors across four analytics “pods”. Before joining Entergy, he was a Principal Data Scientist at Baltimore Gas & Electric (BG&E) where he worked in the grid space on descriptive, diagnostic, predictive, and prescriptive models.
Kevin: How did you get into the utility analytics industry?
Jordan: I have always had an interest in the utility industry and the effects of weather on the power infrastructure system. As a child, growing up in Louisiana, I was exposed to numerous tropical systems and severe thunderstorms. During these events, widespread power outages would occur. I was constantly checking outage maps, wondering why certain areas lost power and others didn’t, how long until it would come back, and so on. So, it’s no accident that I ended up in this industry.
Kevin: What project have you enjoyed working on most in your career?
Jordan: I would say I really enjoyed developing power outage models during graduate school for FirstEnergy and American Electric Power (AEP). Those projects first introduced me to the utility-analytics world back in 2016. I also enjoy finding ways to incorporate weather data into any analytic use case, especially since it has a major impact. Another rewarding project was one involving predicting vehicular pole hits at Baltimore Gas & Electric (BG&E).
Kevin: What has been your biggest professional challenge and how did you work through it?
Jordan: I would say convincing utilities to adopt “advanced” analytics. Many times, there is a misconception that analytics involves mostly Power BI dashboards or reports. There is a wealth of data available at utilities that can be harnessed to create predictive and prescriptive models.
Kevin: If you could go back in time and give yourself one piece of advice before entering the utility analytics industry, what would it be?
Jordan: I would say to my younger self to remain flexible. Not all projects have the flash you’d expect or want. It’s all about what the business wants and what can save time, money, and energy. Process improvement use cases are also vital because they help someone complete a task more efficiently. I’d also say to not be afraid to take a chance and throw some ideas out there. You never know how an idea will be received until you try.
Kevin: What would you like to talk to fellow colleagues and members about in UAI Connect? Or, what issues or topics would you like to see more discussions on in UAI Connect?
Jordan: I have already submitted an inquiry about expectation management in the industry when it comes to analytics. I am always curious as to how others are communicating to their leadership that models are not “the” answer, but a tool used as data-driven decision support. Many times, analytics is packaged into a shiny box and presented to leadership. Then, when it comes time to release those models, they do not perform perfectly. This leaves us in the analytics world defending our work. However, no model is perfect and setting a clear expectation beforehand is of great help.
Kevin: Thank you so much for sharing with us and for being a highly engaged member of UAI!
Do you have any final thoughts, ideas, or comments you would like to share with your fellow UAI members?
Jordan: I would say to be active here! It’s a great place to meet others, engage, and find new ideas and friends.

Strategic Advisory Board (SAB) Discussion UPDATES
- Creation of Job Descriptions
- We identified which roles/positions we want to create job descriptions, as well as captured some things to consider for these job descriptions:
- Focus on the tactical roles
- Align roles to industry standard
- Make sure you think well-rounded about the roles, i.e. from a small utility perspective by including bullet points of roles and responsibilities that may role-up into the roles identified for hybrid roles
- Data scientist is not always a perfect fit
- Identify progression based on experience
- IT vs Business
- Should roles be segmented based on side of the business? OR…
- Should we go by the functions to take away IT vs Business?
- Focus roles/positions on functions
- Engineers
- Architects
- Data Scientists
- Data Stewards (Question from SAB members: Is this a specific job title role within utilities?)
- Data Analysts/Management
- Reporting Analysts
- Examples of roles/positions
- All the same…
- Solutions Engineer (getting a ML application into production, containerization, intersects with architect)
- Data Engineer
- Analytics Engineer
- DevOps Engineer
- MLOps Engineer
- Business Intelligence Analyst
- AI Specialist overlaps with Data Scientist and ML Engineer
- Back End IT: Data Base Engineer
- Front End: Business Intelligence Analyst/Developing Reporting Solutions
- All the same…
- We identified a small group of SAB and EAC members to work on the job descriptions for each role/position – Leslie to be in touch within the next two weeks to pull us together
- @Dawn, OUC, OUC
- @Jordan, Entergy
- @Nadia, El Paso Electric
- @Beth, The Energy Authority
- @Kelly, City Utilities of Springfield, MO
- @Joseph, Duke Energy
- @Vijoy, Consumers Energy
- @John, American Electric Power
- @Neelanjan, Tennessee Valley Authority
- Small group to work on:
- Frame the role and responsibilities, key components
- Experience vs degree, i.e. requirements
- What to watch out for, lessons learned
- Industry representation of salary
- Full circle conversation with cloud migration/adoption and IT vs Business: evolve job descriptions to include moving into the cloud and should also include collaboration between IT and the business
- We identified which roles/positions we want to create job descriptions, as well as captured some things to consider for these job descriptions:
EAC DISCUSSION- We spent time reviewing the things discussed/identified during the May 10, 2022 EAC meeting at UA Summit. These notes are attached to this post. We also made a few additional notes to the topics of discussions, as noted below
- The EAC members at our meeting during UA Summit worked collaboratively and provided a wealth of information to the topics at hand:
- Analytics in IT vs. Analytics in the Business
- Make sure to add “Industrial Systems Engineer”
- Best Practice Get data scientists in the field
- Hiring and Retention
- Cloud Migration/Adoption
- Can capitalize implementation, but not consumption in the cloud – Lots of members agree and are doing the same
- Work with regulators on filing costs
- We all collectively could do a better job of Data Governance in Cloud Migration/Adoption
- Data Governance/Data Quality
- EV chargers/vendors – they are offering no standardization of data – they are all over the place
- Push to get standardize data from vendors
- Impost requirements on vendors to play with you
- Who can see the data is a bigger issue than who owns the data, i.e. making it usable. Owners don’t share.
- The Intersection of Digital Experience and Data Analytics
- Experience = Why to align with priorities
- Data = How
- ESG (Environment Societal Governance)
- Analytics in IT vs. Analytics in the Business
- There has been a lot to consume and combine regarding the amazing discussions that took place during this meeting, so we want to make sure to take time during today’s meeting to do a review of this information, especially for those that missed the meeting at UA Summit
- The team here at UAI is still reviewing and compiling actions to take regarding this information, so we think it is important to give an overview of the EAC’s findings and collect any additional thoughts on these topics. Due to this focus, we will not discuss any new topics during this June EAC meeting.
Thanks!

MemberJune 30, 2022 at 6:10 am in reply to: Reminder — UAI Executive Advisory Council Meeting – June 29, 2022Hello EAC Members,
Please remember to reply to this post to submit feedback to @Erin for the Use Case Collector we discussed during our EAC meeting on Wednesday, June 29. Please find the full request copied below to help jog your memory. We appreciate your review and feedback.
—————————————————————————-
During our March 2022 EAC meeting, you may remember helping UAI modify the project profile submission process due to feedback we received from members regarding barriers to completing Project Profiles. We are excited to report we have made progress on updating this process and now need your feedback to continue moving it forward. In an effort to streamline our process for collecting project and use case information, we have combined the Project Profile and High Value Use Case surveys into one form that we are calling the Use Case Collector. The Use Case Collector aims to collect the most essential information about a use case as well as additional optional information.
Our goal with this Use Case Collector is to reduce the burden of submitting a use case to the Use Case Collection library while still collecting enough information for UAI members to find the submission informative. This is why the form is broken down into two pages: page one is required information that must be completed to submit the use case and page two is optional information that is not required but appreciated. We aim for page one to take no longer than 10 minutes to complete and for both pages to take no longer than 20 minutes.
Could you please review of the Use Case Collector form and provide the following feedback?
- Are the required questions useful and necessary? If no, please let us know why.
- Do the optional questions provide additional material value? If no, please let us know why.
- Is any critical information missing?
Here is a link to the Use Case Collector form: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/KZ85926@Erin will be happy to answer any questions you have regarding the Use Case Collector and Use Case Collection! You can reply to this post with your questions as well or email Erin directly at ehardick@utilityanalytics.com.
Thanks!

Subject: Introduce YourselfHi Everyone!
My name is Brandy Sawyer. I work for Benton Public Utility District (PUD). I’ve been with the company only 3 months, and am brand new to Utilities. I have 17 years in analytics in the grocery industry, so analytics as a whole is not new to me. I’m just getting up to speed on electricity metrics and wanted to connect with others in the same arena.
My PUD is heavily into Tableau Dashboarding, with a solid group of power users who are really invested in analytics and growing our data knowledge. I am really excited to dig in and start participating in groups to get familiar with everyone!
In my free time I like to read books, watch movies, and crochet!
Thanks!

Subject: Introduce YourselfHello UAI Members,
I’m excited to try something new on UAI’s Member-Only Community. I want to not only make this forum a place for work and professional connections to take place on a daily basis, a place to ask each other questions, find answers and exchange knowledge and share information, I want to make it a fun environment to help us all de-stress, get to know each other a little better, and build bonds and friendships of a lifetime.
One of the coolest things about the UAI community is seeing members make connections with one another-it’s incredible to watch personal and professional relationship and friendships begin, grow, evolve, and last. The more relationships that are built between us and the more we get to know each other, the more valuable our work exchanges will become. We open up, we share more, we learn more and we all become so much better together!
Our community gets bigger every day. Many of you already know one another, while others are brand-new faces. I feel like it’s time that we (both new members and established ones) take a little time to introduce ourselves.
- Share your name
- Where you’re from
- How long you’ve worked in utility analytics
- I also encourage you to share non-invasive personal tidbits about yourself, i.e. what you like to do for fun, your hobbies, your pet peeves, or even your favorite memes, of course keeping it in good taste. Share things that will help us all get to know you better
I think it is important to have a little fun while we work and enjoy each other’s company. Please, use the UAI Member-Only Community as a place to work hard and play hard, enjoy, laugh, and have some fun.
I’ll kick us off, and please know you can include as much or little detail in your introduction. I’m wordy, so I went all out:
I’m Leslie, UAI’s membership & digital engagement manager. I’ve been with UAI for almost five months and I’m passionate about connecting members who share similar interests and challenges, and providing them with benefits, experiences, and tools they need to solve their problems and improve their organizations. I enthusiastically joined UAI to help improve and evolve the UAI membership value, as well as manage UAI’s collection of Communities. I am a strategic program director, dynamic business leader, and expert facilitator with over 20 years of experience. To learn even more about my professional work or to connect with me, visit my profile on UAI’s member-only site or LinkedIn. Please reach out to me directly at any time if you have questions or need anything from UAI. I can be reached at lcook@endeavorb2b.com or 646-693-5965.
I’m a Texas girl at heart, born and raised in a small town in north Texas, and then I headed out west to graduate from Texas Tech University (Go Red Raiders!). After school I moved to Colorado and I’ve lived all along the front range for the last 22 years, settling in Denver for the last six years, and I still have a Texas accent (You can take the girl out of Texas, but you can’t take the Texas accent out of the girl!). I’ve been married to my best friend from high school for 17 years, and we have two amazingly intelligent miniature Australian Shepherds, Indio and Charley, who keep us busy.
When I’m not working, I can be found traveling the world. We have been to 11 countries so far and we hope to continue to expand our adventures. I also like to leverage my high attention to detail and project management skills when dabbling in home remodeling and interior design. I come up with crazy design schemes and my patient husband implements my ideas, doing all the skilled and hard labor work. We are now close to the end of a complete remodel of our 1952 house. I cannot wait to be done with this project that has taken us about three years to complete…I can almost see the light!
I am truly excited to get to know ALL UAI’s members, so please reply to this discussion post to introduce yourself. Give a little of yourself and you will be surprised at how much you get in return through your valuable, purpose-built relationships via UAI.
Like I said, I have only been with UAI for about five months, but I’m already having so much fun and learning a lot from all of you! We have a lot of positive updates coming soon and we are evolving, with your input, to better meet your needs and goals, and I can’t wait to share these things with you. You must stay tuned into UAI’s Member-Only Community to learn more within the next few months. We will also be announcing some new things and some updates during the unique and exciting event we have coming in June 2020, UA Summit Reimagined!
Introduce yourself, learn more about others, and connect through UAI!
Stay safe and healthy,
Leslie

Kevin: How did you get into the utility analytics industry?
Joyce: I have always had a love of the precise nature of data. From a career standpoint, I actually started my career as a clinical microbiologist, where a good deal of the work I did involved the measurement of the concentrations of antibiotic required for the best patient outcomes. Once we measure something and write it down, we’ve created data. From the laboratory I went into the sales and marketing of (among other things) those systems that collect, store and report data in laboratories. I moved into utilities from there as a Quality Analyst and moved through the company in several roles, but always one with a data component (what isn’t, lol) and eventually led DTEs establishing of our first Enterprise Data & Analytics group and Enterprise Datalake.
Kevin: What project have you enjoyed working on most in your career?
Joyce: Ok, that is sort of like asking me my favorite travel destination! I like them all. Honestly. Every assignment or opportunity has a component of adding value and moving the needle in the right direction for the greater good. I need to be learning, collaborating, adding value and making things better for someone else and I’ve been involved in a number of projects where I could do all of those things. The “loop” gets closed when I can share learnings with others. If I talked about one of my favorites, it would be that of leading implementation of the company’s first ever datalake. The project was a standout because of the value that it brought to the enterprise and the opportunity it brought to the entire team to learning new technologies and methods along the way to share with others. We approached the implementation using “one use case at a time” as our mantra and guidepost, with plans to deliver business value as quickly and regularly. With it, we were able to instantiate our Azure subscription and stand up our first data ‘puddle’ in about 6 months. With each use case, the team created just enough of new design patterns, more data to the lake and enabled our collaborators in the business to unlock insights not previously available. Concurrently, we stood up a data user group so that the early adopters could share learnings and stories of success with other areas of the enterprise. While the majority of the ‘big’ datasets are already available in the datalake (outage, customer, AMI, telemetry, GIS, etc), demand to add more is still high after nearly 4 years.
Kevin: What has been your biggest professional challenge and how did you work through it?
Joyce: DTE implemented SAP a number of years ago for all of the backoffice functions, and at the same time Maximo for work management. My role was to plan and execute the cutover from old to new, particularly conversion of all the master, semi-transactional and transactional data. At the time, sheer volume of the data required a load time of several weeks and we were given a window of several days to make it happen. Seemed like an impossible task at the time, but I proposed a potential solution and as a team we worked it out and made it happen. I still remember the day when I brought that possibility to my boss – he was so relieved that we could make it work that he gave me all the money in his pocket, about 37 cents as a reward : )
Kevin: If you could go back in time and give yourself one piece of advice before entering the utility analytics industry, what would it be?
Joyce: Keep an open mind! As expected, we all approach new challenges with the foundation of all of our prior learnings. It is easy to wear the blinders of experience and lose out on what’s possible. We live in a time where nearly everything we do generates some sort of data and it’s no different in our world of utilities. We have begun making information available for folks to discover insights via combination of datasets that were either unavailable or non-existent, or we didn’t have adequate computing capacity to analyze these datasets. Thinking without limitations of what we believe is possible is, in my opinion, key to discovering true value in the data.
Kevin: What would you like to talk to fellow colleagues and members about in UAI Connect? Or, what issues or topics would you like to see more discussions on in UAI Connect?
Joyce: Personally, I am interested in hearing more about how my colleagues at other utilities are approaching data quality. Identification of opportunities, profiling tools, correction, processes/governance for keeping the data clean, establishing ownership and FTEs dedicated to the activity.
Kevin: Thank you so much for sharing with us and for being a highly engaged member of UAI!
Do you have any final thoughts, ideas, or comments you would like to share with your fellow UAI members?
Joyce: I would like to encourage everyone to continue engaging in UAI and talk to others in their organizations about the value of participating. What I have appreciated most about this group is the commonality of objectives, the willingness to share and the resulting opportunities for collaboration.

Subject: Introduce YourselfHi everyone!
My name is Sorrel Bauscher. I was born and raised in Tampa, and I am actually a senior at The University of Tampa who will graduate with my B.S. in Economics with a minor in Philosophy in the begging of May. I am a financial analytics intern at Peoples Gas in Tampa, and last semester had a contract management internship with the business development team. While I have only been in the utility industry for 6 months or so, I hope to continue in utility analytics after graduation.
I love my city, all the nearby beaches, and of course, the Tampa Bay Lightning. My partner and I also enjoy traveling, attending concerts, collecting vinyl, kayaking, and trying new and unique restaurants all around the Tamp Bay area. On the weekends, I can be found at my job I’ve had since my sophomore year in high school at a nearby golf course.
I am grateful for the opportunity thus far and can’t wait to learn all I can!

Subject: March (2022) Member Spotlight: Lawrence Bustos (TECO-People’s Gas)Lawrence Bustos is an active UAI member and provides outstanding influence and contributions to the UAI community through any of our multiple channels, including, but not limited to engagement on UAI Connect, volunteering with UAI, involvement and/or leadership in monthly Community Conversations, and/or speaking at UAI events, plus so much. As thanks, we are featuring him in the UAI Member Spotlight. Lawrence is the Manager of Business Operations Support Services at TECO-Peoples Gas System based out of Tampa, FL. He has 7 years of experience in the oil and gas industry in engineering and operations.
Kevin: How did you get into the utility analytics industry?
Lawrence: While developing a presence within the company for using data and BI Reports, I was invited by multiple colleagues to research UAI. Our company was a member and made it easy for me to connect. I was initially working on measurement data for gate stations and was interested in applying data mining concepts for solving solutions. I was not aware of how many other data analytics leaders were doing what I love doing. When I learned about UAI from colleagues, I instantly felt that burden was lifted knowing that I wasn’t alone. After becoming a member, I attended the 2021 Annual conference and have enjoyed meeting so many wonderful people in the industry.
Kevin: What project have you enjoyed working on most in your career?
Lawrence: I have enjoyed working on collaborating with multiple departments within the company to visualize and organize reports using platforms such as Power BI and Qualtrics. The project consisted of data engineering, data visualization and is an ongoing cultural shift for creating a data driven community within the company. I have focused on operations data and specific information that can help us with field operations and damage prevention. Our reports help in viewing operational data, which in turn can be correlated to financials specific to operation and optimized customer support. Our team members have embraced utilizing multiple dashboards and reports, to analyze and develop solutions based off factual data presented in simple reports. I am proud of team members in our company for understanding how powerful data is and most importantly how it helps people.
Kevin: What has been your biggest professional challenge and how did you work through it?
Lawrence: I usually don’t view challenges as something to overcome. I view challenges as growth that provide opportunities that will later help you to share blessings with others. Self-growth in general specific to the utility analytics space has been starting a vision by yourself and developing a clear communication for leaders and team members to understand. Developing a direction for a company wide data strategy is something I continue to work on with colleagues and leaders. I am thankful for the many people who I have found within TECO-PGS and in UAI, which have made me feel like there is a community available to help in pioneering the way forward.
Kevin: If you could go back in time and give yourself one piece of advice before entering the utility analytics industry, what would it be?
Lawrence: This industry is in an infant stage; thus, you are carving out new paths and creating many new opportunities that have never been used. Thus, be patient and strategic in communicating a vision before practical application. Always have a good attitude and know that the insights you bring will shine a light of truth for many other in darkness.
Kevin: What would you like to talk to fellow colleagues and members about in UAI Connect? Or, what issues or topics would you like to see more discussions on in UAI Connect?
Lawrence: I would like to learn more about applications of artificial intelligence and data mining applied specifically to gas utilities particularly in Engineering, operations, and business forecasting. I enjoy learning about predictive analytics being applied to help forecast and optimize strategic business decisions. This includes how operations variables can predict financials and grant insight into better customer and business relationships.
Kevin: Thank you so much for sharing with us and for being a highly engaged member of UAI!
Do you have any final thoughts, ideas, or comments you would like to share with your fellow UAI members?
Lawrence: Thank you all for being so welcoming and for creating connections that make a safe space to for us to collaborate. If anyone ever wants to discuss utility analytics, I am always available to help. I am passionate about all data analytics topics and enjoy meeting new team members in the industry.

I’m Joe Katon at Duke Energy. I manage the Business Intelligence group associated with our Products & Services located in Charlotte, NC area. Our team’s focus includes Power BI reporting, data centralization, and some advanced analytics as it relates to them. My team’s focus examines a full 360 degrees of program performance, including managing data and reporting of the P&L and cost analysis, vendor performance, customer satisfaction, and customer interaction and saturation, to name just a few aspects of our analytics.
I’ve been with Duke for about 12 years or so serving the same program area, and I have worked closely with Norv and our other analytics areas as we began formalizing data science a few years ago. I feel we have pushed the envelope quite a bit, but still have plenty of runway to do more together. We are a highly collaborative group, without a doubt.
I look forward to working and collaborating with all of you, along with my data scientists, in the future.

Session Description:
During this session, Josh and his team at Oncor will share more information about Oncor’s truck route optimization algorithm using genetic machine learning to minimize miles driven. It is great to get to know you even more through this interview. I love and agree with your comment for the fourth question, “one very unique aspect of the utility industry that isn’t discussed enough (or appreciated enough) is that we can share so much within our industry network. We can problem-solve, share best practices and even commiserate with one another. I don’t know of any other industry where this is possible, and we need to take advantage of it more!“
Cheers!
Leslie

Subject: February (2022) Member Spotlight: Carrie Mokros (NiSource)Carrie Mokros is an active UAI member and provides outstanding influence and contributions to the UAI community through any of our multiple channels, including, but not limited to engagement on UAI Connect, volunteering with UAI, involvement and/or leadership in monthly Community Conversations, and/or speaking at UAI events, plus so much. As thanks, we are featuring her in the UAI Member Spotlight. Carrie is a Manager on the Customer Insights & Performance team at NiSource based out of Columbus, OH. After 20 years in Customer Experience and Marketing in a variety of industries, Carrie has always been passionate about the customer and acting upon customer improvements based upon VOC feedback.
Kevin: How did you get into the utility analytics industry?
Member:
When I joined NiSource approx. four years ago, I was brand new to the utility/energy industry. My role on the Customer Insights & Performance team includes helping measure the success of customer improvements and experience metrics in addition to voice-of-the customer insights. My former leader suggested I get involved in UAI when I was looking for ways to learn about the industry. Once I did some research on UAI, I determined that not only would this be a great way to dig deeper into analytics, but I could also create a great network and learn best practices within the industry…a win/win!
Kevin: What project have you enjoyed working on most in your career?
Member: For me, anything that gets me close to the customer. I have a passion for bringing the customers’ voice to the table when the organization is looking at prioritization of corporate initiatives. One specific “project” that has really stuck with me is the insights engagement we conducted shortly after the beginning of COVID-19 (who knew that two years later it would continue to impact our daily lives as much as it has!). We conducted an online discussion forum with our customers asking our customers about their worries, thoughts and plans for facing this different world. I think it was a great way for our customers to know we were listening and were partners in helping them navigate this new normal.
Kevin: What has been your biggest professional challenge and how did you work through it?
Member: Currently, it is all about data. How can we get it, where can we store it and how/who can access it? With a fast-paced ever changing digital environment, we are continually be asked to do more with less and turn it around quicker than we ever imagined. So how do we accomplish it and still maintain the quality of insights? How we are currently working through it is taking partners internally (it seems as though each team has a piece of the bigger puzzle) and leaning on industry best practices, like those we gain from UAI, eSource, Chartwell and other organizations we are a part of.
Kevin: If you could go back in time and give yourself one piece of advice before entering the utility analytics industry, what would it be?
Member: Really take the take to ask questions about the industry and how it works. You have great resources within your own company, but even more within the industry network you create. My career has included professional services, retail, and consumer products in addition to the utilities, and the one very unique aspect of the utility industry that isn’t discussed enough (or appreciated enough) is that we can share so much within our industry network. We can problem-solve, share best practices and even commiserate with one another. I don’t know of any other industry where this is possible, and we need to take advantage of it more!
Kevin: What would you like to talk to fellow colleagues and members about in UAI Connect? Or, what issues or topics would you like to see more discussions on in UAI Connect?
Member: Understand how others are solving the customer data challenge of the need/want to gather more and more demographics and customer-specific data when we are being challenged with more and more privacy and data security policies.
Kevin: Thank you so much for sharing with us and for being a highly engaged member of UAI!
Do you have any final thoughts, ideas, or comments you would like to share with your fellow UAI members?
Member: Thank you all for continuing to welcome me to your network and sharing so much with me. Each and every month I learn something new or receive nuggets of info to take back to my organization. I appreciate the transparency and openness this group has provided over the years, and I continue to look for ways to give back to an organization I continue to learn from.
