UAI Real Talk Roundtables: Collaborative Exploration of EV Detection and Prediction

Wednesday, August 9th at 9am PT / 10am MT / 11am CT / 12pm ET

**Updated** UAI Members can download the meeting video. See links below to become a member of UAI and join in the conversations.

You are invited to an unplugged discussion about EV Detection and Prediction strategies and insights led by Ben Carls and Valliappan Muthukaruppan from Exelon along with Andrew Barrington from Avista.

Many of our member utilities are developing a strategy to build electric vehicle stations across their service areas.  UAI is hosting an opportunity to talk with your peers and brainstorm solutions on your EV detection and prediction projects.

Since this is a conversation and knowledge sharing session, we can assume related topics will come up as we dive into the subject matter, but we’ll use the agenda below to get us started.  These subjects may very well overlap during discussion.

  • How do utilities identify customers who currently have an electric vehicle?
  • What is being done to extrapolate the model to then predict where future EV stations are needed, keeping an equitable distribution across socio-economic neighborhoods.
  • How are utilities training models so they are relevant to a large region?
  • What categories of data are utilities obtaining or purchasing from third parties and what are they doing to test the accuracy of the data, including the validity of survey responses?
  • Are there opportunities for collaborative projects between utilities?

UAI Real Talk Round Tables and UAI Communities are member only activities.

Meet our discussion leaders:

Ben Carls Exelon

Ben Carls is the Manager, Data Scientists at Exelon.

Valliappan Muthukaruppan is a Senior Data Scientist at Exelon corporation handling customer related analytics for four major utilities in Chicago (ComEd), Philadelphia (PECO), Baltimore (BGE), and Washington DC (PHI). He completed his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering with a minor in Statistics from North Carolina State University, Raleigh. Part of Valliappan’s thesis involved distribution transformer management and monitoring using smart meter data.

Andrew Barrington Avista

Andrew Barrington joined Avista Corporation in 2022 as a Products and Services Manager with direct responsibilities encompassing Unplanned Outages, Energy Management Tools, and Billing & Payments, ensuring the seamless delivery of high-quality services to Avista’s valued customers.

But that’s not all folks!

We’ve got more EV Detections conversations going on in virtual communities and in person AT #UA Week 2023!

Grid Analytics Community Conversation:  Data Dive: Accelerating EV User Detection through Collaborative Model Development

Led by Phi Nguyen, Sr. Data Scientist and Anderson Bolles, Clean Transportation Data Analytics & Reporting Manager at San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E)

Tuesday, July 18th, 2023

Join us for an insightful Community Conversation as we share the outcomes of our companywide “Data Dive”, a hackathon-style event by SDG&E to leverage machine learning and smart meter data for detecting electric vehicle (EV) users. This unique initiative was born out of the need to centralize internal data science expertise and foster collaboration, revealing valuable lessons about overcoming silos within our organization.

In the first part of the session, we will highlight the significance of this project by addressing the pressing business need for clean transportation data analytics and reporting and how an AI-driven solution can enable informed decision-making and insights. We will discuss some of the technical logistics required to build a bridge of collaboration across different business units. Finally, we will share the technical solution that emerged from our collaborative efforts, showcasing a cloud-based approach to identify residential customers charging EVs at home using interval smart meter data.

Throughout this presentation, we will discuss the challenges we encountered attempting such an event for the first time, including areas where technology served as a bottleneck. We will share our insights into the potential of data dive hackathons for driving innovation and building a culture around data science.

Grid Analytics Community Conversation: EVs and Grid Analytics: Driving the Future Together

** IN PERSON ONLY**during #UA Week 2023 Tuesday, October 31, 2023, in Orlando, FL.

Join us for an engaging session featuring small group breakout discussions and a collective sharing of insights, as we explore two pivotal topics shaping the future of grid analytics. In the first topic, “EVs and Grid Analytics: Driving the Future Together,” participants will delve into the synergistic relationship between electric vehicles and grid analytics, discussing strategies to optimize charging infrastructure, manage load variability, and unlock the full potential of electric mobility within the energy ecosystem.
